You know, despite the fact that there is a certain amount of schadenfreude at seeing this tactic turned back upon the GOP, I gotta say that unless there is some evidence of actual conflict of interest or other way in which the candidate's (our their spouse's) fortune would negatively affect their presidency this whole line of attack is pretty specious.

I think Americans are pretty used to their leaders being rich. Sure, there may be some political gain by claiming that their candidate is more out of touch with the average Joe than our candidate--but this all just seems like the sort of heated campaign BS that I really wish we could do without.

Nemo's Brother 2008-07-02 02:25:25 PM
She should as well. Do you notice that pretty much every first lady or first lady wannabe sucks and drags down the candidate?

Michelle Obama for Barry, Hillary Clinton for Bill and then Bill for Hillary, Teressa Heins for John Kerry, Tipper Gore for AlGore, Barbra Bush for Bush I, Nancy Reagan for Ronny.

I guess most of them are just opportunistic biatches.

/Teressa was probably the worst though. She would go out there to introduce her husband and start ranting about herself. STFU! I always wanted to ask her in the middle of her anti-globalization/outsourcing rants why the Heinz Corporation had outsourced most of its jobs.

I hate all of these 2004 x 2008 y threads.

They makes both Dems and Repubs look bad. They are both hypocrites and both equally petty. They both do the exact same thing.

2004 Dem - It's petty and unecessary.
2004 Repub - It's the right of Americans to know

2008 Dem - It's the right of Americans to know
2008 Repub - It's petty and unecessary.

Then it breaks down into the retarded argument of "they did it first!"

The first part of the problem is it's tough to be outraged about things when you're generally well educated and lucid about the reality around you. The second part is the things we really need to be outraged about are either too intractable or too impalpable for enough people to concern themselves with.

Because most democrats understand these are stupid petty arguments, but stupid petty arguments is all the GOP has. Republicans in general don't look at the complex picture. Their thoughts are what you can stick on a bumper sticker.

2004: RepublicansSome self-interested people demand full disclosure about Teresa Heinz Kerry's wealth. 2008: RepublicansOther self-interested people whine because Politico points out that Cindy McCain hasn't given full disclosure about her wealth

TFA can't name a single Republican whose position has changed on the issue. Instead, it villifies "the Republicans," whoever that is, and "recent precedent for increased scrutiny of spousal finances," whatever that is.

You could write the same article about "the Democrats" and "recent precedent for resisting scrutiny of spousal finances." But it's not worth it, because TFA is a manufactured story designed to generate high-minded faux-outrage.

Maynard G. Muskievote 2008-07-02 03:00:21 PM
FTFA: Cindy McCain released only the first two pages of her 2006 tax return. She received an extension until Oct. 15 to file her 2007 returns, and the aide said "she will make the decision whether to release her 2007 return at the appropriate time."

"Appropriate time" of course being right around the first Wednesday after the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

See the thing is I'd be happy to see the Democrats letting it go, if it wasn't for the fact that the GOP would demand full disclosure when it was the other way around again.

NRO editorial calling for disclosure

I mean, it's pretty facile to pretend that no-one was calling for this. However, it was not something that I can find record of high-ranking GOP officers calling for. Either my google is bad or those people are smart enough to see both edges of the sword.

Interesting article. What gets me is how much the McCains spend on houses and the help, and yet the right finds a way to call Obama "elitist" with a straight face.

Something tells me that Obama didn't spend anywhere near 200k on employees for his home(s) in the last 5 years combined.

I'm not sure Obama has any hired help. I'm pretty sure he's among the least wealthy members of the senate. Yup. Pretty much smacks of elitism.

Mr_Fabulous:

Magic Dick makes everything special, right ladies? In the 70s I painted a banner of the cover on a bed sheet for my brother to take to a show. They asked him to come on stage with it. I did the same for another show with the "Sancuary" cover that didn't garner an invite. It may have been the reefer addled misspelling.

You're pretty level headed and always have grounded points. But pointing towards Free Republic as the meeting point for Republicans is the same as saying Al Sharpton represents all african americans.

They're just obnoxiously loud nutbags, same as KOS.

The"elitist" meme in general never ceases to amaze me. The people at the top of the political heap, and most of the talking heads and think-tankers are, almost to a man (or woman) elite. They mostly attended good schools and many of them are either from wealthy families or have amassed large sums of money themselves.

How any of them can accuse the other of being 'elite' is beyond me.

So what is the big deal?
Heinz didn't release any details, well, just a tad bit of information.
Cindy has released about the same information following the Heinz precedent. But now the democrats are asking for more while the republicans were way over the top for asking for the same question.

Can't have it both ways, and that goes for both parties.

The democrats could have taken the high road and said; Well it was wrong for Heinz, they shouldn't have asked, so we won't ask either.

i think you are confusing the terms "elite" and "elitist." the latter being one who scorns and scoffs at the common man.

/not that i believe that about obama either, especially considering his life story reads like it was written by horatio alger

I'm not entirely sure there's an extreme distinction between the two. 'Elitist,' I think, could take two forms, one of outright scorn and the other of blatant pandering. Both are pretty bad, but I haven't seen that many examples of outright scorn. However, the pandering is pandemic.
