...so, you're saying it works?

Only if the false confession is admissable in a courtroom. Which it isn't.

well lucky for us terrorism suspects aren't being tried in courtrooms, or anywhere else for that matter.

Well some were learned from the Chinese, whereas others were gleaned from watching Eli Roth movies.

It worked on war criminal McCain. No wonder he supports Bush's torture policies.

The "conservatives" should be kissing your ass for giving them something to attach onto in this thread because discussing the actual subject is going to be a bit of a problem.

Meh. I read that as ironic, given that McCain admitted to "war crimes" under torture, with the implication being that McCain has not actually committed war crimes, but confessed falsely to them-- proof that this sort of torture does produce false confessions.

Tabatha Static, am I being too generous towards you?

Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark] 2008-07-02 11:57:40 AM
People being tortured say stuff that's not true?

Who knew?

That's what I read out of it. But then again, I know some history about McCain's treatment in captivity.

That might be asking a lot out of many posters in this thread.

You may have to draw a diagram to go with that explanation, it's like telling your dog to go get $20 from an ATM otherwise.

I'm sure the Vietnamese charged McCain for war crimes.
Too bad the U.S. won't do the same for our representatives who have committed their fair share

As did I, not to mention she's obviously speaking from the other side's POV, which you have to do when discussing THEIR decisions (in this case, to waterboard a prisoner) and why they made them.

Not too difficult, I'd think.

...given that it's their guy who was a POW in a Communist nation in Asia.

You are making an assumption that the intent is to actually prosecute people, and not merely to create propaganda to further justify more attacks on civil rights and to consolidate more power in the executive.

I have Visio at work, and I never need to use it. Now that I've discovered it's usefulness-- (though image hosting turned out to take longer than the actual creation process) I'll probably be creating more such flowcharts.

Have I finally found my Fark niche?

Also, how sad is it that I reacted to the McDonald's sign, with hunger, before I reacted to the word "Dachau"?

Our Constitution stands for something, or nothing at all. Hanging is too good for Corky McFlightsuit. Hopefully history will take a lesson from his treason.

Okay. So common knowledge is that paying attention to attention whores and trolls just encourages them. I realize that you feel the need to beat up on obviously idiotic positions to bolster your self-esteem, but by getting into "arguments" with a known alt troll repeatedly, you realize you're making things worse for everyone else, right?

Sounds about right. Since we're also using the Chinese strategy against illegal immigration. Hey, it worked 2200 years ago, right?

"We do not torture."

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and their lawyers (ESPECIALLY their lawyers - Yoo, Addington, Gonzalez, et al - should be in the Hague, charged with war crimes.

ftfa:
What the trainers did not say, and may not have known, was that their chart had been copied verbatim from a 1957 Air Force study of Chinese Communist techniques used during the Korean War to obtain confessions, many of them false, from American prisoners.

The recycled chart is the latest and most vivid evidence of the way Communist interrogation methods that the United States long described as torture became the basis for interrogations both by the military at the base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and by the Central Intelligence Agency.

I think the people who have been defending this admin. should really step back and examine where they are.

Senator Carl Levin, Democrat of Michigan and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said after reviewing the 1957 article that "every American would be shocked" by the origin of the training document.

"What makes this document doubly stunning is that these were techniques to get false confessions," Mr. Levin said. "People say we need intelligence, and we do. But we don't need false intelligence."

that's our Carl.

Major General Geoffrey D. Miller was given command of Gitmo. His techniques, ordered by Donald Rumsfeld, extracted 400 "confessions" from 600 prisoners.

He was so successful at torture, Donald Rumsfeld and the White House ordered him to interrogate prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is responsible for the war crimes committed in Iraqi and Afghani prisons including Abu Ghraib.

I hope The Hague gets a hold of him and sentences him to death. Along with those who ordered him to do what he did.

brantgoose 2008-07-02 03:37:10 PM
I hope McCain at least got a consultant's fee.

Knowing the Publicans though, it probably went to one of their friends.
