Too bad that the test was a 3rd grade math test.

Anyone .. ANYONE .. willing to lay odds that there's some cheating going on here?

I know. I love how they say it's due to attracting and retaining great teachers and no, there could be NO WAY that anyone cheated. Nope, nuh-uh, not here.

One hundred percent - every single student - of the eighth grade at Harlem Village Academy passed the state's math test.

I enjoy how NPR had to explain what one hundred percent means.

You THINK?

DanThe1Man is right -- the teacher's last name must be Cartmanez.

From TFA "It's a completely incorrect way to transform education," she says. Teaching shouldn't be compliance-driven, she says. "Education is all about the person standing at the front of the room."

Excuse me, I need to go lay down for a few minutes. I'm not used to seeing thought and reason in people talking about fixing up schools.

Also nice work subby on the headline, Washington Generals, I chuckled.

Not me. There's a funny thing that happens when you don't treat children like idiots and actually teach them as opposed to just spitting information at them. They learn a fark ton and do well.

from TFA Harlem School Aces Math Test
In a society obsessed with school testing, one public school in New York City has achieved the perfect score. One hundred percent - every single student - of the eighth grade at Harlem Village Academy passed the state's math test.

So, achieving "the perfect score" means everyone simply passed? Congratulations, you're competent!

Kome [TotalFark] 2008-07-02 12:16:16 AM
It's not small class size: There can be 28 or more students in a class.

28 is not small??? Goddamn. I went to rich, white schools and I can't remember any classes being smaller than 30 (except for, in high school, some junior/senior level elective classes).

My first thought was shenanigans too.

Then I read the article and realized the only shenanigans were in the headline.

I went to a public high school and I don't think there was any class with more than 32 people I remember.

Every student in 8th grade Harlem class gets 100% on state's math test.

I would hope so if they were all working on it together.

alexanderplatz:So, achieving "the perfect score" means everyone simply passed? Congratulations, you're competent!

Given how many students fail these atrociously easy tests (that get easier each year) it is an accomplishment of sorted. Granted it's sort of like a normal person getting bronze in the special olympics so it's probably "sad" more than anything else.

Haoie 2008-07-02 12:54:03 AM
That's just standardised testing gone wrong.

Standardised doesn't mean identical, and it certainly doesn't mean perfect.

FrostyOne 2008-07-02 12:54:20 AM
They didnt all get 100% on their tests. 100% of the eigth graders passed their tests.

FTA 'One hundred percent - every single student - of the eighth grade at Harlem Village Academy passed the state's math test.'

You fail subby.

It was always 24 in a class for my elementary and middle school. Most of my high school classes weren't much bigger than that, but the more advanced classes often have less students than the general classes.

Yeah, subby fails at eighth grade reading comprehension.

Isn't this the part where people call out submittard for failing reading comprehension? I guess this is what Bush meant when he asked is our children learning.

There are also several people in this thread deserving of the -tard action for not RingTFA.

planes 2008-07-02 12:58:15 AM
That story is so much bull-shiat. If the New York test is like the one given in Minnesota, which it should be, they only have to get 55% to "pass". And, the reading comprehension portion is a one-page open-book exam. One of the kids brought the test home. You read a one page story that goes something like this:

"Johnny got up one morning and took the train to the big city to start his new job. When the train arrived in the big city, he took a cab to a hotel near the company office where he would be working."

So, you turn the page and take the test: Question #1: "How did Johnny get to the big city?" Well heck, if you can't remember, you are allowed to go back and find out.

About one-half of the 8th graders flunk this test.

robsul82 [TotalFark] 2008-07-02 12:59:42 AM
If Edward James Olmos has taught me anything, it's that these kids will probably have to take a retest in front of state officials.

My first grade class was 102 kids. St Francis of Assisi in Philly.
Not a problem. Field Marshall Rommell's sibling, Sister Godsaveus,IHM, was the teach, complete with riding crop. "Order" always ruled. By HS, much better. Only 1560 in my grad class.

farkerintx 2008-07-02 01:06:09 AM
Hey, I had a "pop quiz" like that in college once, it was worth 20% of our final grade, it was given when the prof showed up 22 minutes late to class. (A majority of the class left after the customary 15 minutes)

There was only one "question" on our test.

1. Write your name on a piece of paper.

(Turn it in on your way out, after the lecture)

I got a 100%!!!!
