Y'know, I'm usually pretty reluctant to cry "Sellout," because I'm in favor of artists getting paid however they can. Hell, my favorite band in the world was sharp enough to get paid for putting their music in a couple-three ads, and I applaud them for it. Whatever keeps them financially viable so they keep putting out great records, fine. But this? Kinda takes the cake.

Slipknot shilling for AOL? Sounds like a punchline to a seriouslt unfunny joke.

I've bold-ed the sentence which, in my opinion, nullifies your statement.

After all, Slipknot doesn't put out very good music.

i have no problems with musicians being sell-outs. i DO have a problem when sell-outs attempt to convince the masses that they're "true artists" and "do it for the love of the music". slipknot has always sucked - this is par for them (it's too bad they can't write good music, because a couple of them are decent musicians).

don't they know they might upset their loyal angst-ridden, pimply 14-year old fan-base?!?!

oh - and i end up using this waaaaaay too much ...

I must admit, Slipknot is not my thing at all. But I met a guitar tech from Des Moines, who knew their guitarist when they still lived in Ames, and he told me their guitarist is an excellent classically-trained guitarist, who used to teach guitar. I see no reason to doubt the guy.

Makes me think of how many musicians there must be who do common-denominator stuff that's popular, who are capable of doing greater things.

The only decent source of good metal/hard rock music now that I am aware of is the so-called "stoner" bands.

Dead Meadow
Sons of Otis
High on Fire
35007
Electric Wizard....etc....

Slipknot,Linkin Park and other "nu-metal" bands suck the sh*t right outta my ass. They sound so utterly shopping mall to me.
Guitars and bass have that dreadful "scoop" sound and the drums sound too bright and digital but what makes them suck most are the wretched vocals. They always way over process the vocals and put it way on top of the mix so you can hear all the embarrassing way over emoting. (this is actually common in pretty much ALL lame mainstream music now)

I would tend to agree, to a point. But there is a ton of sweet underground metal out there. A lot of talented musicians are really doing it for the love of music, but since they don't have the financial backing may be harder to seek out.
Just met Shawn Whitaker from Insideous Decrepancy last week. Incredibly talented, funny, intellegent guy. Probably makes enough money to keep strings on his guitar and print a batch of tee shirts every once in a while.
But I love me some stoner rock. Brant Bjork for president!

You have no idea.

There was a certain early-90's pop-rock band that did pretty well as a result of song placement in the popular TV show of the day (back when this was a new concept). I was kind of familiar with them, particularly one song which was inescapable - total radio saturation, MTV plays, etc, but I never really gave them much thought. Years later, I was pawing through the bins at my local used record/CD store (remember those?) when I came across a copy of one of their CDs. A recording geek, I checked the liner notes to see who engineered it, when a picture of the band caught my eye. I know this guy. The guitar player was a colleague of mine from the late-80's very early-90's, an extremely accomplished jazz/fusion musician.

Around the same time, I discovered that one of my early teachers, quite possibly the greatest guitar player I have ever heard (and I have heard just about all of them at this point), was no longer playing but producing shiatty pop records.

I could easily list a couple dozen musicians of the highest caliber who are currently not playing at a high level, solely to pay the bills.

Y'know, I haven't really thought about it, but I tend to agree with your stoner band statement, though the "stoner" part is definitely not what attracts me nor keeps me listening to the music. The Sword, for example, I'm a big fan of that sound there. Though I also enjoy Finntroll and Dethklok. Hm, wait, I guess it's just the Sword and High on Fire that are the stoner bands I'm into. Oh well, carry on.
/likes Nightwish too, but I don't hold the highest opinion of them as far as power metalers go

Check out:

Slough Feg, whose last two albums I'd describe as a mixture of Manilla Road, Pentagram and Thin Lizzy, and who played a great classic style of heavy metal before that.

Radio Moscow. They have one self-titled album out which is some solid Blue Cheer and Sir Lord Baltimore worship.

I'd also say Dax Riggs, the Acid Bath/Agents of Oblivion/deadboy vocalist turned singer-songwriter, but I wouldn't say his new album is hard rock. It's a mixture of influences from glam to indie to stoner. It's still a good example of non-hard rock with full artistic credibility.

The Melvins are still going strong. Boris too. Harvey Milk are another good band but difficult to describe - sludge rock, maybe?

So yeah, I think there's still more out there, but you're not far wrong. Electric Wizard and High on Fire's latest albums were magnificent.

yes yes you're all so much cooler than the rest of us because you're all so much more l33t than everyone else for dissing a band that will see more success in 6 months than any of you whiny pricks will see in your entire lifetime.

Proceed to rattle off some under the radar band only you and 10 other people have ever heard of, then repudiate that same band when a label (major or otherwise)sees their potential, signs them and suddenly they're getting the midday day part on your favorite radio station then it's game on again. Tell people how "you knew them when" and sell the sellout sizzle. Rinse and repeat.

I am Soooo glad I mentioned "Stoner" above.

I am writing down ALL the names being suggested here.
I am no stranger to The Sword and of course the Melvins are an institution.(Boris got their name from a Melvins record)

I regard the Melvins as profound an influence on the "stoner" movement as much as Black Sabbath,Blue Cheer and Pentagram.

The "Lysol" record by the Melvins is pretty much what did it.
It is what inspired Sleep to do "Dopesmoker" (a.k.a. "Jerusalem")

btw---I still really like the Melvins. They are now doing more ambient and experimental stuff but it still has that weird sensual and often creepy element to it.

If Slipknot, or any band for that matter, likes their music, and their fans like their music, why the hate? So they have a deal with AOL? So what? Music is a business and it's their choice who they sign with. Plenty of bands have been ripped off and left to dry by labels and distributers of all shapes and sizes. If Slipknot's happy with AOL, good luck to them. If it allows the band to put out the kind of music they want to, good for them. This news item isn't about whether you like them or who you think is better. Save that for the "My Band Is Best" news item.

false dichotomy. neither success nor obscurity are a measure of integrity. true music snobs judge based on sound, not cred. slipknot sounds like brickwall-limited dogshiat with zero dynamic or soul made by guys who mistake the 'shock' of wearing shiatty, gimmicky masks for art.

I'm late to the party but i gotta say a few things. Slipknot is one of the most experimental bands that came outta the 1990s. Their whole set up is ingenious. Having samples take care of guitar and stage effects, great idea. Go find a copy of Mate Feed Kill Repeat before you judge. Do I like the way they're marketed to angst ridden teens? No, but i think it's unreasonable to think that just because they've got a lot of fans that they're sell outs. Isn't it important as an artist to get your music out to as many people as possible? You guys think you're so music savvy with your esoteric underground bands that only you and you're 3 friends know about. Why not judge the art on its own merits? Why worry about all the other bullshiat? Listen to it, it's well done music from the heart, you're all idiots i'm going to work

lostsatellite:neither success nor obscurity are a measure of integrity.

Neither is your assertion of what is or is not art. Given enough time any creative twist to an old genre will be adopted by enough people to be considered a gimmick. One man's trash is another man's treasure. I measure integrity by drive and intestinal fortitude. I've heard the respective side projects of some of the members of Slipknot, and it's amazing both in scope and quality of product. Being able to shift and adapt staying true to your own measure of art is what integrity means to me. Not what some presumptive know-it-all in bumfarked Idaho thinks is cool.

I for one think the idea to put out new series of masks is quite artistic and reflects a changing interpersonal as well as musical dynamic within the band. But then again, I like midget porn so there's certainly no accounting for taste.

The issue at hand is that Success=Selling out and to that end I maintain that while a lot of bands have and will continue to do that very thing this particular dictum has been repeated ad nauseum as a blanket statement for every single band that ends up partnering with the likes of AOL or MTV.

In my particular industry, I run across more metal from every godforsaken sub genre man can create in a week that most run across in a year, I see the sellouts and passionless hacks that pass for "metal" these days. The Iowa 9 are not one of them.

And for the record, there are no mistakes in art.
