De Pere makes fark again. Sadly this time for a much lamer reason than mass underage drinking.

Maggiacomo, 29, is a veteran of the music scene in Providence, R.I. But it wasn't until he found wizard rock that he was able to quit his day job as technical writer and focus on music full time. A crowd of 500 listeners attended his first show.

"This was my first show where everyone was focused on the music," he said. "A lot of times (before), there were 15 people in the crowd, and they were focused on getting drunk, or talking to other people."

he must have magically acquired his musical skills

I'm a fan of the books/movies/etc. But seriously, I've seen a couple of these bands and they are really pretty awful.

/Saw Harry and the Potters once
//Couldn't keep up with their own damn laptop playing their silly drum beats
///Although their friends Uncle Monsterface were pretty bad ass in a completely freaky, kids music for adults way

And all 13.

I was with a girl that drug me to a Wizard Rock thing. Several hundred teenage girls. I thought the Dateline guy was gonna walk in the room.

Horrid, horrid 'music'.

I wish I could go to one.

I was always out of town when Harry and the Potters came...but my friend called me on his cell and gave his cell to one of them and we talked for a few minutes.

Amazing. Don't make fun of me...I know you will

Like TFA says, Wizard Rock is all over the map, musically. It ranges from really amateurish DIY stuff done by kids (and undoubtedly their first attempts at a band) to some acts that are genuinely label-worthy. The former has a certain charm, at least for a geezer like me who remembers first hand how shiatty most first-generation punk bands were. It's honest stuff. Not always good, mind you...but honest.

A big percentage of wrock is folky acoustic stuff, and it varies radically in quality. There are a few real gems, vocally, like Split Seven Ways, Witherwings, and Tonks!, and a handful of genuinely good songwriters (Steph Anderson of Tonks and the Aurors being the best example).

Some of the "wizardtronic" sub-genre is quite good. Ministry of Magic, The Sectumsempras, House of Black, Malfoy Manor, Wrackspurt!, and Luna's Ceiling are doing stuff that wouldn't be at all out of place on an EBM/IDM/Electroindustrial playlist.

Like any genre of music, you have to filter out the crap.
