Good call. In b4 people who can't separate great talent from public psychological breakdown.

Janis Joplin had more talent in her pinky finger than Winohouse has in that high hair-do.

skammie:Janis Joplin had more talent in her pinky finger than Winohouse has in that high hair-do.

Janis is overrated. She was very talented, but she is also overrated. And that dude who's married to Amy Winehouse will one day soon be the Courtney Love of our generation.

Janis checked out at age 27. Amy is 24.

What makes this comparison valid? The only talent Winehouse has is the ability to go weeks without a shower!

Fark that stupid crackhead Winehouse. What a joke to compare that pipehead to Joplin.

Jack White, you are a really stupid asshole.

27 is the magic number. Joplin, Hendrix, Cobain, Morrison...it's going to be a photo-finish for Amy. You can do it honey, just three more years.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2008-06-30 08:00:41 AM
I like one of Amy's songs, but the talent competition isn't even close.

Here are the big differences:

1) Janis Joplin wasn't a waifish skank.
2) Janis Joplin sang with 100,000% more passion than Winehouse ever did.

Other than that, yeah... totally similar.

For those balking at the comparison in terms of talent, just think about the current generation. When aiming for a Joplin, Winehouse is just the best we can do.

I don't think she can... emphysema by age 23? She gives "circling the drain" new meaning.

Rickenbacker:Well, I guess he's right. Both are known for their insatiable drug habits. Oh wait...don't they both sing, or something?

Winehouse and Joplin both cover similar musical ground, though Joplin tended more towards blues with rock twists (as was the fashion of the day) while Winehouse is a blues singer with a motown twist. Both immersed themselves in the forlorn lonliness of the art form and picked up outrageous substance abuse problems to go with them. If Janis was alive now, everyone would be calling her a shrill, cackling cow.

It is difficult to look past the over-exposed, abject disaster that is Amy Winehouse's personal life. I really like her music, however, and a great number of professional musicians do as well. Not just the industry sharks, but actual musicians think that she's the sh*t. Personally, I'd never want to book anything that involved her having to show up in one piece, but again that doesn't have much to do with her voice.

I also disagree with your evaluation of Jack White, but hey that's like, your opinion, man.

WaltzingMathilda [TotalFark] 2008-06-30 10:56:08 AM
Rickenbacker:Jack White may be the least talented "guitarist" with a recording contract.

Based on your handle, I'm going to say that you know that is not true. You may not like him, and I'm not going to dispute your view of his level of talent, but you know there are thousands of contracts out there with less talent behind the paper.

But hey, it's Fark.com, let's all talk out of our asses.

Well 24 but quibbling is silly. She is definitely dying a slower death than the others (especially Cobain).

Winehouse should take heed ... you don't want to become Grace Slick. Dying young gives you automatic legacy status, no matter how phenomenally mediocre you were. See Jim Morrison & Janis Joplin. Do more drugs.

What!?? Its stupid hyperbole like this that makes me want to write a long rant, but I will try to keep it short. I mean really, of all the shiatty, shiatty, shiatTY bands out there with generic guitar riffs and little talent beyond power chords, you pick on Jack White? And talent on guitar isn't just being able to whip out gut-busting solos (which since you think Jack White can't play, you obviously haven't listened to more than 1 or 2 tracks, or heard him live), its also being able to write songs on the guitar. You can hate the guy, but really, if you think he's the least talented guitarist with a recording contract, you don't have ears, know what music is, and I am seriously doubting your ability to form rational thoughts.

I've never seen anything like the winehouse coverage/commentary. Basically 100% of the people who say she sucks, etc, can't name another song of her's besides "rehab". These retards are the children of people who thought nirvana sucked because they hadn't heard anything but smells like teen spirit. Seriously, to those of us that have enjoyed Ms. Winehouse's albums over and over, the hate makes no sense. Yes she's a drug addict. So's half the planet.
/the same dickheads who think she sucks will come across "Me and Mr. Jones" or "love is a losing game" after she dies and become instant winehouse-apologists. Try this retards: what don't you like about her MUSIC? *crickets*

Archie Godwin:Of course, because we all know Janis would never smoke crack or do anything like that.

To be fair, crack wasn't even invented back then, so no she wouldn't ;p

I think that if we had all the info-streaming power of the internet and the celebrity gossip market that exists today, we'd have much lower opinions of many "legends" of yesteryear.

InmanRoshi:Winehouse should take heed ... you don't want to become Grace Slick. Dying young gives you automatic legacy status, no matter how phenomenally mediocre you were. See Jim Morrison & Janis Joplin. Do more drugs.

What a cynical and altogether 100% accurate synopsis! I can see Sublime getting really played and boring if they had made any more albums past "Sublime." Instead, Brad Nowell is a legend and their music stands up nicely forever. Sad but true.

You mean, an incredibly overrated guitarist says that an incredibly overrated singer is comparable to a slightly less overrated singer?

Why does anyone care about this?

puffy999 [TotalFark] 2008-06-30 03:50:36 PM
Well, aside from the fact that it's pure idiocy.

Janis is historically relevant. Winehouse won't be.
Sort of like the comparisons between Hendrix and Jack White, except Hendrix knew that rhythm and musical timing/ability are necessary to play a guitar at the top levels.

Who is comparing Hendrix and Jack White, other than some random morons on the internet? At least find someone who works in the music industry or has talent or something and show us the source, because I sure as hell couldn't find much of anyone comparing them in a simple search on Google.
