Oh no...

The desert seems to eat a lot of these choppers for some reason.

balancing act 2008-06-29 09:51:28 PM
Geez- this is the THIRD crash in the last month in AZ of medical helicopters.
this is getting really sad.

Julieahni [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 09:57:07 PM
Yikes. That's horrible.

Is there a kind of crash that doesn't result in a collision?
Can two helicopters collide and not be in midair?

aresef 2008-06-29 10:09:09 PM
Ironic tag killed in wreckage.

Coronach 2008-06-29 10:09:19 PM
He says all three people on one of the choppers were killed. Those victims include a patient and the pilot.

Damn. I was hoping that the patient and pilot out of all three that were killed would've lived.

Yes

Metaluna Mutant 2008-06-29 10:10:24 PM
At least medical technicians are already at the site.

Fark-the-Fnord 2008-06-29 10:10:44 PM
Is it too early to say that they are doing it wrong?

alacoco 2008-06-29 10:10:48 PM
Is it just me, or does it seem that a lot of helicopters crash in Arizona?

This is just awful.

Holy shiat.

I wonder how that happened. Air traffic controller farked up?

alacoco 2008-06-29 10:12:12 PM
oops, I should have refreshed before I asked that question...

glassa 2008-06-29 10:14:21 PM
I guess Flagstaff is a little short on medical helecopters now.

Kar98 2008-06-29 10:15:00 PM
[IRONIC] tag had a mid-air collision with [SCARY]?

Boozed_up_from_the_shoes_up 2008-06-29 10:16:03 PM
Im a college kid in Flagstaff. This happened about 1/8th of a mile from my house. It started a wild fire at the end of our street behind the houses. One of my room mates heard some weird shiat earlier but we didnt know it was helicopters crashing.

My mom works in an office building overlooking the site of the news helicopter collision and crash last year.

my mom flys on medical helicopters so I'm not getting a kick out of these replys.

That's what you get when you let big pharmaceuticals know you've found the cure to cancer. Suck it, Wake Forest scientists.

ecmoRandomNumbers:NOT in a desert.

So those folks that call it high desert country have been wrong all these years? I know Flagstaff measures snow in feet during the winter, I've been there many times.....but it's still high desert.

atlanta_ufo 2008-06-29 10:19:55 PM
Do helicopters have collision detectors like passenger planes do ?

Balchinian 2008-06-29 10:20:25 PM
Where will they bury the survivors?

Well, it would make sense if the helicopter crashed without a pilot. Maybe he left it in gear.

/That still sucks though.

I heard some of the people on board the chopper were actually injured before the crash.

I smell conspiracy.

Boozed_up_from_the_shoes_up 2008-06-29 10:24:16 PM
We got about 14 feet of snow from december to march in the city this winter. we average 22 inches of rain a year. Desert? not so much.

One of my friends is a fire fighter up in flag and he was just called up like ten minutes ago to assist on the crash site cuz it started a fire. Yesterday he complained that the fire season was weak and he didnt get many overtime hours. Today he went hiking and missed the first shift fighting this guy.

recockulous 2008-06-29 10:24:46 PM
Nobody does mid-air helicopter crashes like Arizona.

I was hiking today in Flag and heard/felt this *BOOM*. My first thought was, "That can't be good." Then I started thinking, "Too big for a handgun or rifle... maybe a shotgun... or a canon. It IS Sunday and this IS Arizona, probably a canon."

I lay out nude in Phoenix and within minutes helicopters are flying by low and slow...

They need to heavily regulate HEMS if they are going to reduce the accidents that are piling up. Unfortunately it's a competitive business with a bottom-line that is often granted to the lowest bidder.

EMS ships will keep crashing left and right until the operators are required by law to fly twin-engine ships, with dual-pilots, with 5000 hour minimums each, NVG-equipped, and a minimum of a hundred hours IFR simulator refresher/training time per year.

That is the tempo.

Seriously though, I'm suprised you can walk outside at all in Phoenix this time of year. I passed through last July 3rd and it was like 120 outside.

Drove up to Falgstaff and it was only 83.

I prefer Flagstaff.

Not in your run-of-the-mill EMS/Utility helicopter.

By Seattle's comparison it is. You're arid high country like Reno. It's not 118 degrees but still damn dry.

FTA: He wasn't sure whether the other casualties involved any people on the ground. He does not know what caused the collision.

I'm thinking it was the collision. How it was two helicopters. Again from what I hear, will make the NTSB nuts.

OK. How about a my space page? Or are you one of those "I'm 350 pounds and beautiful" nudists? If so, nevermind...

snort.

Used to fly in and out of Flag at half the speed of smell.

/Bad week for EMS heli guys here in Arizona.
