How the hell does this happen, with trained soldiers, no less?

I'm assuming the Armee de Terre uses the same NATO-standard M855 "green tip" 5.56mm rounds in their FAMAS rifles for live fire.

How the hell do you load up a magazine with that, and NOT realize it's a live round, and not the crimped-casing blanks?

Shouldn't that be obvious? It's the French military. When is the last time something ever went right for them?

This. I have never fired blanks before, but don't they have much less kick than live rounds? If so its amazing that this guy got more than one round off without realizing it.

Hey! I think we're losing sight of the big picture here.

The soldier was shooting French people, so let's not all be so quick to judge.

Quasi-Concious Racist Wordsmith 2008-06-29 08:43:56 PM
It's a real shame the way a few bad apples disgrace the entire barrel like that...but you have to break a few eggs when making le omelette.

goofass 2008-06-29 08:44:01 PM
With the French, you'd think it would be the other way around: that they'd bring blanks to a real war.

doofusgumby [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 08:45:23 PM
cripes. our m16's use some kind of adapter/gas restricter on the end of the barrel so the gas operated bolt does it's thing. if you fire live ammo through it, it esplodes. so maybe that's what happened here - he noticed it right away when his adapter went blooey and stopped firing.

I could see this happening if someone else loaded the mags for him...but still. damn.

Jubeebee 2008-06-29 08:46:14 PM
Even if he thought they were blanks, what the hell is a soldier doing pointing a weapon into a crowd and pulling the trigger? I don't care if you look at each round to be sure it's a blank directly before you put it in the chamber, you don't shoot at anything you aren't willing to destroy.

farking French bastards haven't been the same since they beat down the Kaiser.

PhelanWolf 2008-06-29 08:46:21 PM
Going by the highest rate of fire I found for a FAMAS (1100 rounds per minute) You could go through a 30 round clip in 2 seconds on fully auto.

They're...different. We use blanks for training, but in order to fire more than one with a semi-automatic weapon, you need to plug the barrel with a "Blank Firing Adapter" which creates enough back-pressure to cycle the action*. Hollywood prop guns have the barrels permanently plugged.

This is what I was referring to. Like I said, as far as I know, that's standard 5.56mm, NATO-wide.

*I think that's how it works. I just shoot them, I don't build them.

That is severely messed up.

Mock hostage situation?

Besides, why wouldn't the guy firing the gun not notice that he was really shooting people after the first bullet hit?

Yes Sound 2008-06-29 08:54:21 PM
I see everything I came to say has been covered.

Usually you have to use a blank firing apparatus so your weapon will cycle (it plugs the barrel so that the gas can build up enough pressure to push the bolt back). It is really hard to fire real rounds through a BFA.

In addition why would you be pointing at a crowd of spectators?

And blanks and live ammo look NOTHING alike.

madcap72 2008-06-29 08:54:36 PM
Article says 16 people were injured including four children.

Well, when you drop your rifle in surrender, there's no telling what direction it'll be pointing when it hits the ground and goes off.

I wondered if the soldiers with live ammo surrendered first to the unarmed masses.

If the french go to war against themselves, how do they decide who gets to surrender?

Remember the story from a couple of years ago where a french hunter shot himself in the ass? to recap he leaned his gun up against a tree jump into the bushes for a shiat, and the gun fell...

How many times must we repeat the mistake of letting Frenchmen near firearms?
