"fighting for his seat", heh-heh.

Churchill2004 [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 05:18:37 PM
This will be fun to watch. With Obama's down-ticket support, a possible strong showing among libertarians and Ron Paul types for Barr, and Graham's unpopularity, are there any locals who see a chance for him winning? It's going to be a heavily Democratic year.

So does that mean he sends out racist newsletters or does it just mean that his supporters are really farking annoying?

Classy guy

McCainDemocrat:slur

Immigration is one of the relatively few issues which I objected strongly to Ron Paul's stance on, and I'll even say I'd gladly take McCain-Kennedy over the status quo, but that is not a "slur" (as in racially offensive gets-you-kicked-off-TV slur). The same language has been used by the right-wing hacks like Rush Limbaugh who you mimic.

Looking at this guy's platform, he clearly tilts more to the conservative side of the "Ron Paul movement" (I struggle for a better term but I refuse to use that dumbass "r3volution" shiat) than to the libertarian side. Still, he'd be a huge improvement over Lindsey Graham. An improvement over the average Senator, come to think of it. Also, if there were a "Ron Paul Democrat" in the Senate, it'd move Paul's attention away from this "save the GOP!" pipe dream towards a more trans-partisan movement. There are a lot of Western Democrats who, in the broadest sense, could fall within a broad libertarian-leaning coalition.

"Bush could have passed a marriage amendment," Conley said.

Does this guy not understand how amendments work?

And WTF is so "libertarian" about a "marriage amendment?"

Still, no Lindsey Graham would be a good thing.

Ron Paul Revere

There are quite a few conservatives who I'm sure are disgusted with McCain and use that slur as well.

I'm one of those republicans, but I don't resort to ad hominem.

Lionel Mandrake:And WTF is so "libertarian" about a "marriage amendment?"

The guy is not a libertarian. Ron Paul himself has a complicated love-hate relationship with libertarians, and he was much more libertarian than this guy.

This is the kind of "paleoconservatives" that made up a sizable minority of Ron Paul's support and who he, unwisely, chose to make his main appeal to.

I said he'd be an improvement over Graham, and an improvement over the average Senator. Those are both very low bars to be setting, though.

Random Reality Check 2008-06-29 09:18:50 PM
This would be one Senator "Enron Loophole" Graham, the man that introduced
the bill that made it possible for speculators to speculate on oil futures.

Now, what could a clever opponent do with that information and a gas station
sign?

I don't even see how it's really an insult. You replaced the guy's name with the Spanish form of the same name. So what? How is it supposed to be an insult?

I get the xenophobic intention. I was making the point that there's no real rational reason to see it as an insult.

Wait I'm confused.

I thought the main issue of conservatives was smaller less intrusive government. WTF does that have to do with marriage amendments?

I've got family in SC, and from what I'm hearing, Graham isn't very popular. Conley is running to the right of Graham on most social issues, so that should bode well.

Simple- conservatives who support this are hypocrites and/or liars. Inconsistent at the least. Paul didn't support an amendment, if I recall correctly, just DOMA on Federalism grounds.

This guy is clearly more the loony conservative wing of Paul's support that the libertarian wing. The only reason I'm considering him an improvement is because of how low the bar is set.

Hold on, I thought Ron Paul's stance on immigration was "The whole thing could be fixed by a free market/removal of welfare, but as long as we are giving away free stuff to everyone we should close the borders".

That's pretty much it, if you dig into his actual statements. But he packaged it in a strong nativist tone at times. More in his ads than in things he ever said in person.

There are bumper stickers plastered all over here saying "No Amnesty, No Graham." and something about a vote for Graham is a vote for a bilingual nation or some such thing.

As somewhat disgusted as I am with myself for being glad of this, that bodes well for this guy. He clearly intends to be running to the right of Graham, and won't be supporting Obama.

Do I smell a possible third party endorsement from a Democratic Senate nominee?

I hope Lindsey Graham doesn't have to fight as hard as McCain did against Ron Paul and his sheep. A few percent is quite the plurality.

Lindsey Graham: Remove Habeas Corpus From the Constitution

June 12, 2008

GOP blast Gitmo decision, Graham says he is willing to push for a constitutional amendment if necessary

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) vowed Thursday to do everything in his power to overturn the Supreme Court's decision on Guantanamo Bay detainees, saying that, "if necessary," he would push for a constitutional amendment to modify the decision.

A former military prosecutor, Graham blasted the decision as "irresponsible and outrageous," echoing the sentiments of many congressional Republicans and President Bush.

Earlier in the day, the court ruled 5-4 that suspected terrorists held by the U.S. military at Guantanamo Bay have the right to challenge their detention in federal court.

When talking to reporters Thursday afternoon, Graham cautioned that it he was still digesting the decision but said he was "looking at every way I can to modify this position," including fighting to change the statute.

"The American people are going to wake up tomorrow and be shocked to hear that a member of Al Qaeda has the same constitutional rights as an American citizen," said Graham.

"[Even] the Nazis never had that right."

// Except of course, this would remove the right for a fair and speedy trial from the American Constitution for all American Citizens.
/// Just another anti-human anti-American anti-Freedom anti-Christian creep that needs to be arrested for High Treason and hanged from a lamppost.

The Democrats already have a Goldwater conservative playing in their pool. She lost the delegate race to Obama.

stpickrell 2008-06-30 09:54:33 AM
Graham has occasionally gone off the reservation; he's certainly no John Cornyn or George Allen.

Graham won by 10% in 2002. DeMint won by 10% in 2004.

On the other hand, the Juan McCain thing bothers me. Churchill2004, you're being rather .. obtuse in claiming, 'I don't know how Juan McCain could be construed as a racial insult.'

There may yet be similar racial skeletons in his closet, which means he won't get the support of White Yuppies and Blacks needed to win a statewide race in SC.

On the other hand, the 'zomg gays, abortion, and guns' crowd usually don't like illegal immigrants, and this group may split 60-40 for Graham. Their habit is to vote 'R' and old habits die hard, and some of this crowd will still be thinking 'zomg this guy is a Democrat, and Hillary Clinton and Hussein Osama are Democrats.'

To be fair, there's many Blacks who have similar thinking, except they just can't find it in themselves to vote Republican even if the Democrat is a nutcase.

But if 'Juan McCain' is the worst this guy has in terms of the asshat closet, then he will give Graham a scare.

Latest poll shows McCain winning 48-39 over Obama.

My experience has been that the more nutball crazy conservative you are, the more likely you are to get elected to office in South Carolina, especially if you're a Republican. Graham is seen as too moderate by many of the voter's there despite his hard, wide stance on destroying the Fourth Amendment.

Honestly, the Republican Party could run a talking goat for the Senate and win as long as that goat professed to be a Christian who dislikes gays and scary, scary liberals.
