We use them here in ND. They are rather foolproof, but this is Florida we are talking about.

Optical scan machines are good because you at least have a paper trail should things go screwy, as they did in this case, and you only need one or two machines at each polling place. Keep a few extras loaded into pickups in case you need to replace one during the election.

When one considers that billions of ATM transactions are conducted on a daily basis, instant receipts are offered for said transactions and the error rate is - by any measure - miniscule I continue to be astonished that we can't figure out a way to farking vote in a manner that is accurate and provides some kind of paper trail to prevent fraud.

For fark's sake if I buy a pack of gum/coke/extra-small condoms at some Kwik-E-Mart at 4:14AM I get a timed, dated and itemized receipt.

Well, those machines are made by a very sophisticated and trustworthy company:

All of the liberal problems in the country of America are caused by the application of these philosophies. My grandfather fought the Commies so you could have voting.

Keep in mind, this is Florida. They could vote by raising their hands and fark it up.

You can't just give people receipts, because that's going to lead to rampant vote selling.

Holy geez, the SOE's name is Arthur Anderson. Close enough to Arthur Andersen.

I wouldn't trust him to count change. For the love of FSM man ask people to call you Art.

The answer to that is a paper receipt that the voter doesn't take with them. It gets shown to the voter and kept in a lock box for any manual recount.

Something like this maybe?

Okay, if you are voting for the Republican Candidate (McCain) then go to the right side of the room. It is marked with the RED paint. If you are voting for the Democratic Candidate (Obama) then go to the left side of the room. It is marked with BLUE paint. If you are voting third party then stand in the middle and we will give you a piece of paper to write the name down on.

20 people go to the Republican side

35 people go to the democratic side

2 stay in the middle.

And because it is Florida - half the vote goes towards Pat Buchanan

FTA:

A 707-vote disparity between an unofficial vote tally Tuesday and a final count two days later in a West Palm Beach City Commission race has spawned another wave of criticism and questions about Supervisor of Elections Arthur Anderson's ability to run an error-free election.

...

Anderson faces re-election this fall. He was first asked about the discrepancy by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel early Friday. In his response, he said he was unaware of any discrepancy because he has been busy campaigning.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh.

Get rid of the machines entirely.

Diebold is corrupt, they can make bank machines with perfect operational records, but can't make a voting machine that doesn't fark with the vote in favor of those in power right now.

Hmmmm.... If you don't smell a rat, its because you got your head too far up your ass.

We had machines in Ohio that printed a paper receipt and they have gotten rid of them. Still not sure why, but now we have bubble sheets....
