The other side of the coin: That's a more empty silly gesture than North Korea razing a cooling tower.

As the U.S. doesn't have 320K troops that could be committed the gesture must be for their own forces.

Or the civilians that would be exterminated by a ludicrous bombing campaign against Iranian nuclear reactors. Still they would be a couple of million graves short.

thamike:The other side of the coin: That's a more empty silly gesture than North Korea razing a cooling tower.

You overestimate how dangerous a bombed reactor could be. It'd screw up a lot of things, but I'd be shocked if the actual, immediate casualties topped 1,000. Chernobyl only had 57 direct deaths. The long-term increased cancer deaths are really hard to nail down, but no serious estimate goes into more than the tens of thousands. Most don't go higher than 10,000.

I wouldn't want to be in Iran if we did that, but the idea of "millions" of Iranians dying is a bit ludicrous.

Churchill2004:I wouldn't want to be in Iran if we did that, but the idea of "millions" of Iranians dying is a bit ludicrous.

I'll bite. So let's say only 10,000 die just from the reactors. There are other targets as well. And let's not forget the immediate response. The toll will be in the millions. Maybe not millions of Iranians. But millions of a lot of different people in the region. And for what? To protect the millions of people in the region? It's absurd. If Israel does it, you can forget about Israel being habitable any time soon. Or Syria, or Lebanon. These rapture-humping flag-suckers will be the ruin of us all.

Maybe they are just setting up the land for a lovely flower bed that will line their border. And then they will staff it with crotchety retiree gardeners, so if a Jew tries to enter, the crotchety guy can wave his rake and go, "HEY, KEEP OFF THE POSIES!" and then shake his head about Jews today, trampling his flower beds, which the Jews back in his day wouldn't have done, because they had more respect.

well, it's kinda nice that they are going through the effort to provide our troops with a proper burial.

/s'cool, though, because we're just gonna nuke it from orbit. it's the only way to be sure.

spamdog [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 10:07:06 PM
Or, they're digging them for their own troops and civilians for the inevitable strike on Iran, and the "for enemy soldiers" part was just yet more triumphalist rhetoric for Iranian rednecks.

leehuaitu 2008-06-29 10:09:13 PM
Those Iranians must be hella prepared for war to be doing nothing else than digging graves.

Grave digging for your enemies must be some kind of obscene Persian social gesture. Of course, our soldiers wouldn't understand it because we have no-bid contracts for these sort of things.

RichieLaw [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 10:12:05 PM
Hollywood Cole:Man this takes talking shiat to a whole new level.

This.

I don't see Iran bombing anyone with a nuclear weapon. There is no reason for it. There may be fundamentalist Islamists in power, but they know that if they did that to Israel, the US would turn all of Iran into a farking parking lot.

And if they attacked the U.S., the same thing would happen. If terrists received a nuke from Iran, regardless of the method, Iran would become glass as well.

So it's really a no win for them.

The guy at the end of the thread 2008-06-29 10:13:37 PM
I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I think this war is gonna be totally sweet and awsome.

Iran is bigger and more populated than Iraq AND Afghanistan, so you know there's gonna be way more death and brutality.

I suppose that because they have a standing army, and our army is spread rather thin at the moment, we may have to go straight to carpet bombing and chemical warfare. Maybe even say fark the NPT and go strait for radiological and genetic warefare (in the war on terror, the gloves come off.)

Plus, if they hit us all clandestine-like on our shores, we can brust out P.A.T.R.I.O.T ACT 3 and Ultra-GITMO. (Spoiler: we use Gamma-Knife technology to remove the brain-funtctions allowing those insurgents the ability to feel love, hope and any other emotion but shock and terror... cool shiat, stay tuned.)

Naturally, Bush shouldn't have to relenquish his command, so we can finally utilize that contingency Shadow-Government we've all been waiting foor.

I suppose we may have a conscription problem, but I'll stay behind to carry off the dead draft-resistances that will most likely been killed en-masse by our new Blackwater National Guard.

All this being watched, 24/7, from the numbing incadesent glow of a bigscreen T.V. and the comfort of my loft.

It's not if war will happen with Iran, it's when. If McCain is in office there will be at least 12 months or so whereas if Obama's in office they will be attacked by November -- guaranteed. Israel does not trust Obama, an empty suit who can't survive without a teleprompter and meaningless drivel of hope/change with no farking plan. War is going to happen, it's in the air.

A rough estimate of Iranian military prowess leaves them coming up short. Much shorter if they try to lock down the Persian gulf and get the US involved.
Maybe the US does not have the ground forces to spread around but this won't be a ground war. Not until long after it ceases to matter for the Iranians.

...Of course this wont help the oil prices come down anytime soon.
If theres a fight, energy policy will become a very big election issue.

Kind of weak for saber-rattling, no?

mcwebe0 [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 10:26:11 PM
FTFA: "In implementation of the Geneva Conventions... the necessary measures are being taken to provide for the burial of enemy soldiers," the Mehr news agency quoted General Mir-Faisal Bagherzadeh as saying.

"We have plans to dig 15,000 to 20,000 graves in each of the border provinces or a total of 320,000," the general said, some of them mass graves if necessary.

Bagherzadeh said Iran was keen to "reduce the suffering of the families of the fallen in any attack against our country... and prevent any repetition of the long and bitter experience of the Vietnam War."

That's just farkin' brilliant. This is why shiat like Gitmo and Abu Graib are not just morally reprehensible; they are also tactically reprehensible. Here Iran can speak to the international community and take the moral high ground. "We're abiding by the Geneva Convention. We don't want a repeat of America's worst military failure in over 200 years...at least it was until 5 years ago." We opened the door that lets them pull this shiat. What they are actually doing or will actually do is irrelevant. They are making us look like the asses we have been playing for the last seven years.

Could you give me some change with my vote?

It's not saber rattling. It's the scene from Braveheart when the Scots all flash the English before the Battle of Stirling [Bridge] (bridge not utilized in actual film).

We call these ME armies hand clapper armies. They look great in a parade. All they got is terrorism. Which is precisely why they can't be allowed to be an unsupervised nuclear player. It's our doom. No doubt about it. Nations don't coexist out of love. They coexist out of fear.

Their teaching says it got to get really desperate in the world before their Mahdi will stop screwing his 72 virgins long enough to come down and help. Coincidentally, chaos is great for the upward march in the price of oil. So it's all good.

It would be if we went old school on them, enslaving and pillaging them out of existence and giving us our bread and circuses. But no, a few fatass Bush crony Exxon execs will reap billions while the rest of us pay $20 a gallon and the economy spirals farther into the shiatter.

I wonder if the clerics still have the clout to pull off the mass human wave attacks. That would be cool to watch though, I must admit.

Alleviating the suffering of foreign families by dumping the corpses of their loved ones into nameless pits does not sound like its much competition for the Americans mixed up morals.

I think the fact we are even having a debate about POW treatment speaks volumes in comparison to Iran. A nation who seems to be fascinated with poking their regions Dynamite Monkey.
