Well how else are you going to regulate the amount of trash someone can throw away in a week? Where's the line of acceptance supposed to be?

i'm in Disney World and i'm getting a kick out of these replies.

Strangely Tinkerbell is absent.

I have rethought my relationship to my garbage. His clothes are on the lawn.

I was thinking about what fills up our garbabe the most and I'd have to say it's cardboard containers that many items come in.

On a serious note of recycling, I don't do enough as my apartment complex just has a dumpster. When I lived in areas that provided a recycling bin, I gladly seperated the stuff out.

I was born in 1962 and it used to be that all meat was ordered at the butchers based on how much you needed and wrapped in paper. In large grocery stores taht is still an option. I think of the countless number of little trays that come with each meat product in addition to its plastic coatings.

The measures the UK is taking are harsh. But I have to applaud them for trying to re-educate their citizens.

The article pointed out rats & maggots towards the end and I thought - eeeeeeeeeeee gads - the English were never very clean to begin with and we have them to thank for the pesty varmints that carried small pox through out the world.

Maybe in the end their refusal to curb their trash will be the final end to the British. Maybe.

I always get a chuckle at my school when the hippies get all indignant about how we don't have enough recycling bins on campus.

The bottle and can recycling bins go directly in the trash can on the janitor's trash cart (We have a trash and recycling facility where people go though the trash and *gasp* sort it out at a large scale level, because there is enough people that don't speak english at the school so they don't get which can is which.) The recycle bins are just for show so the hippies can feel good about themselves and how green they are.

Claire Corkhill, whose husband received the fine for their open bin, is still recovering from the indignity of having two uniformed garbage enforcement officers, or "garbage police," as they are known locally, show up at her house.

"They were wearing stab vests," she said, referring to a type of body armor. "My sister is a police officer, so we thought it was a joke, to be honest."

They do the same thing at Disney World, except they did it before they actually had recycling bins. Words is (according to the Keys to the Kingdom Tour I took) that people complained so much that they put out a ton of recycling bins. They all end up the same place and sorted out by some of the amazing custodial staff that Disney employs. Not trying to brown nose or anything, but the people at Disney sure do keep things very very clean in general.

Where I grew up, you paid for a permit which allowed you to drive your trash to a transfer station, operate the crushing machine, and put it in a huge bin which was taken away every month. Since I had never lived with trash service, I always assumed that you paid for them to take it away. *learns something new*

I now live in a major city and my complex recycles. Among myself and the two other people I live with, we generate 1 bag/week. I recycle all I can, but I'm no hippy. How do you generate much more (if we take diapers out of the equation)?

TheFlannelAvenger 2008-06-29 05:45:34 PM
There is no municipal garbage pickup here. You can hire a private contractor for $50 a month. I just buy things with as little packaging as possible, recycle, and drop off 1 or 2 white kitchen trash bags (yes, the 13 gallon ones) per month to my office Dumpster. It really is not that hard to recycle, avoid products that are excessively packaged, and compost the organics.

This one is getting some people up in arms-but most are complying. These Whitehall folks sound like thugs-and TFA is right about one thing-you can only push it so far with Brits before they just refuse to do it, and then beat you up. The flipside of the coin is that on an island-there's only so much space, and we've used most of it up.

That being said, compared to anywhere in the States, I think they're absolutely ferocious about it here. Your neighbors will make note of it and point it out to you if you're seen flagrantly wasting or not recycling.

G2V 2008-06-29 06:31:27 PM
Most recycling is a feel-good, ecologically impotent, I'm-gonna-make-the-world-better-without-trying-anything-too-hard, crock.

Troodon 2008-06-29 06:38:16 PM
Waste disposal is reaching crisis point in the UK. Heavily reliant upon landfill, the UK has finally begun running out of places to bury garbage.

Unfortunately there's no easy solution. You can burn a large proportion of it but however clean and green a waste incineration-electricity plant will be its going to take a brave MP to volunteer to have one in their constituency. You can export it, but even ignoring the cost of transportation its far from a ethical option. You can recycle it: though the UK is getting better, we're far behind some states in Europe that ignored the whining and through a carrot and stick approach seem to have brought people around to the idea - part of the problem might be the lack of leadership on pushing this forward, instead its left to local councils and thus often perceived as just another way for the council to wring yet more cash out of local taxpayers. Or you can reduce it, the Cinderella option as for some reason the government seems to pussy foot around the idea of forcing companies to bear some responsibility for the massively excess amounts of packaging they use.

Something urgently has to be done, no one will like it, so as you can imagine politicians arent exactly queuing up to offer the leadership that's needed.

Aside from the woman in the story named "Cocks" (heh... heheh... Hehehehe), here's the quote of the story here:

"To encourage people to do something, you start off by asking them 'Please,'" he said. "Then you say 'Pretty please.' But if they don't respond to carrots, you have to move a little more along the scale that has carrots on one end and sticks on the other. You have to make it a little more difficult for them not to recycle."

This right here is textbook government oppression.... and all over garbage recycling. I'm just glad that I, as an American, still have options to give the government an appropriate response if they ever tried to convince me with a "stick."

this whole thing started with plastics.
before plastics, most goods were packed in biodegradable products
that would break down eventually.now everything is packed in a plastic clamshell that will cause you to hurt yourself just to get it out of the packaging. one thing that really peeves me is the plastic drink cups that are so prevalent today. why do we need them?
and soft drinks that are prepackaged should be either in aluminum or glass. preferably aluminum as it is recycled much more easily.
glass has never been very popular to recycle,a few have tried it but
i have never seen many operations recycling glass last very long.
and those darn plastic grocery bags are probably the worst idea to come along on a long while.it really isnt all that hard to have two
bins in the kitchen(three if your really into it and compost)
one for trash that isnt recyclable and another for recyclable items.
could be a bit of a bear in a small apartment,i have to admit that.
but it is doable. my county is forcing a program with our haulers to provide a minimum level of service that includes recycling.
the haulers decided that to do that they must triple rates.
and while im doing my part, when they come to pick up,they dump everything into the same place.perhaps they separate it later?

In Whitehaven, the residents are annoyed enough about the rules they already have.

Sound like some local garbage men need a serious beatdown and the politicians that make these type of "Garbage Police State" tactics legal need to have a few tons of garbage dumped all over their homes and lawns and vehicles.

I had such a packaging fail myself last week. I'd ordered a 12-pack of ball point pens (a variety not available even in the local office supply stores) from a company that sold through amazon.com. The pens arrived promptly, but the small box of pens was packaged inside a box that would have easily held at least a dozen boxes of said pens with room to spare. They had inserted one of those inflatable bags into the packing box to keep it from shifting. When I posted feedback to the seller, I praised them for the prompt shipment & the accuracy of the order, but I also let them know that I had a issue with their wasteful packaging.

I would give a lot, at this point, for a community that cared enough about the common welfare to send people around and check on how you dispose of garbage.

Absolutely, for all of it's Thatcherite propaganda (new window) it's classic political satire.
