Either phrase is still entirely appropriate. And we aren't balking at Indy surviving a blast in a fridge, we're balking at a pulp adventure franchise turning into X-files.

Artificially created internet memes are the new internet meme.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 11:13:47 AM
Nope, don't like it. DENIED.

SpinStopper [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 11:16:51 AM
Jebus. It's just a movie.

If you want realism, go see Kung Fu Panda or something ;)

Nuke the Fridge is movies

Jump the Shark is television

Lucased the Script is any entertainment disaster from which there can be no recovery

Nuke the fridge has already jumped the shark.

/gotta go punch myself for even typing that

True memes are created via abiogenesis, not by some geek trying to make one.

You can see this in action every time some whank on Fark spams what they think is the new "Getting a kick out of" meme. Those don't live.

The ones that live a life of their own independent of the people using them, those live. (Big tooth girl, etc.)

This stupidity resides soundly in the former category, not the latter category.

/You'll get used to it.

Oh, come on. Crystal Skull was a great movie. The fridge was so completely over-the-top it was awesome.

It's not Olivier in Hamlet, folks. It's a summer popcorn movie. I thought it was better than either Temple or Crusade.

And since both Spielberg and Lucas were involved, it could very well have turned into a Bottomless Pit of Suck. Imagine "War of the Minority AI: Attack of the Phantom Sith".

Sweaty-toothed madman.

Wouldn't know. Refuse to pay to see the movie. These money grubbers would write sequels to Hamlet starring Bruce Willis if they didn't fear getting poisoned by English Majors working at Starbucks...

Please.

Find a realistic way to survive a nuclear blast. Like jumping behind a log.

Am I missing out on a fact from the past? Were lead lined fridges common? Was advertising that it was lead lined common?

carmody 2008-06-29 11:45:05 AM
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is still a better movie than The Last Crusade. Get over it.

Never heard of it until I read the headline.

It sounds really stupid.

duffblue 2008-06-29 11:47:03 AM
The fridge scene was the best, the rest of the movie was rubbish.

shower_in_my_socks [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 11:47:39 AM
I like the "nuke the fridge" reference. It isn't appropriate because Indy surviving a nuclear blast inside a refrigerator that shot him miles through the air, plowed into the ground and spit him out without so much as a twisted ankle ruined my suspension of disbelief ; it's just an incredibly silly moment and almost everything that happened after that point sucked ass (except for some of the early scenes with Shia that immediately followed).

ASPBonehead 2008-06-29 11:48:04 AM
if we're going this route, what about "bombed the bus", or "dropped the ring"

That's pretty much what I've been trying to articulate since seeing the movie.

I love good sci-fi schlock (I've been known to enjoy the Sci-Fi channel's original movies), and I love good adventure schlock... but not together. If this had been a whole new franchise, I'd be ok with the movie. Unfortunately it feels like they just dropped Indy into this flick to give it a brand name. There's no integrity in that.

MightyPez 2008-06-29 11:48:47 AM
I'm going to go ahead and declare the movie was absolute balls. Any film where I can't even suspend disbelief while I'm stoned out of my skull deserves nothing but contempt.

The tree swinging scene followed by the army of monkeys made me throw my arms up in the theater and go, "That's it, I'm done!"

rcf1105 [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 11:49:12 AM
Personally, I thought the Shia Lebouf vine swinging scene was more ridiculous.

I want to see X-Files turned into a pulp adventure franchise.

Imagine "War of the Minority AI: Attack of the Phantom Sith".

Actually, that's pretty much what Kingdom of the Crystal Skull felt like. In fact, I think I'll use that as a description for it in the future. So, thanks. For that.

Totally. I mean when Indy survived angels in the Ark of the Covenant melting everyone who gazed upon them, or the shaman who ripped out still-beating hearts with his bare hands, or parachuting out of a plane with an inflatable raft, or chatting with an 800 year old knight, or being healed by drinking from the Holy Grail, that was all ENTIRELY believable amirite?

Apparently the Librarian didn't like it either.

If the first I hear about a meme is in a news story. It is not a meme.

/spends WAY too much time on the internet.

But there is a divide in suspending disbelief in the mystical, and suspending disbelief for commonly known scientific fact.

Surviving the bomb blast is akin to shooting Indy out of giant cannon and letting him talk in outer space while orbiting the planet right before he nose dives into a kiddy pool, walking away unscathed.

anonimo 2008-06-29 11:54:12 AM
Indy did not survive a direct hit from a nuclear bomb. He survived the blast wave of said bomb, but please. Do continue to rave about how a fictional movie ruined your childhood, spilled coke on your pants, ran off with your girlfriend/boyfriend, gave your mom cancer, and turned the economy of this great nation upside down. Please. I enjoy listening to mindless prats.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 11:54:25 AM
BTW, this originated at Aint-It-Cool-News.com. So if you guys want to use a meme from that band of geniuses, go right ahead.

As for the realism of that scene, Indy got thrown of of a windshield, crawled under the chassis of a truck, got dragged behind it, and jumped back though the window, all with keeping his hat on in the original and you're giving them shiat about the fridge?

Parachuting out of a plane using a LIFE RAFT is just as nonsensical.

kentriccubed 2008-06-29 11:55:54 AM
"Nuke the Fridge" doesn't work for me.

If I absolutely had to create an Indiana Jones "Jump the Shark" joke, I'd probably use the phrase "Sending in the Monkeys"

EX: 24 is really sending in the monkeys nowadays.

downtownkid 2008-06-29 11:56:09 AM
Instead of nuking the fridge how about "Dating Emily".

It was convincing enough, I suppose, to have it busted on Mythbusters. I don't see them detonating nukes any time soon for this one.

I'm not saying the other movies weren't full of nonsense. But the new one just felt like it went too far.

Well, I do what I can. Glad to help out.

As for the silliness in Crystal Skull, you seriously need to re-watch Raiders with the same critical eye. It's a pretty silly movie, too. But that's what makes it so good. If there's an Indy movie with too much silliness it was Crusade, IMHO.

Exactly. Also, why was the fridge the only thing in the blast to get blown that far? If the fridge made it miles away, why didn't other debris too?

Also, as said above, its still not as bad as the monkeys. Not even close, actually.

I don't understand what you all are biatching about. After all, moviemakers are only responding to what they think you thought was cool. Aren't you (and I, for that matter) the same people who ate up Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Matrix?

Ever since those two movies, improbable wuxia-type physical feats and the ability to walk away from events that would cause real people to suffer extensive bodily damage has become the staple of all films. I'm ok with it, it's all in good action-movie fun.
