I've preferred this version ever since I first heard it.

Whenever someone at the bar ask me to play a rap song, I play this.

Ah, thank you Itunes. For $1, I have a new WTF song for my car mix cd.

I'm with you. Accentuating a fake drawl is as annoying as a Latino who only speaks with an accent when they tell you their name.

/My husband is Hispanic, so I can say that, right?

Geez...I submitted this months ago but it never got greenlit.

Still, great stuff. Other Gourds tunes are kickers too. The band is from Austin and has a great sense of humor.

Remember when this was on Napster and listed under like every band name out there? That's Ween! No, that's Cake! No, that's Phish! No, that's Beck! No, that's...

Still WTF-y, but in a somewhat different light, is folk legend Richard Thompson doing Britney's "Oops I Did it Again". Like The Gourds' cover, it makes a stupid-ass song actually listenable and kind of cool.

On the other hand, we also have Alanis Morrisette covering "My Humps", which is indescribably awesome in so many ways, but ultimately is unable to overcome the black hole of stupidity of the song's lyrics.

Some of us can perceive the value of this song as though we were endowed with a sixth sense. I call it "the sense of humor."

Yeah, always saw it labeled as Blues Traveler.

One of the first things I saw when I moved to Austin was The Gourds do this song live at ACL. The crowd went batshiat insane and 1,000 bowls of KB were fired up at once. It was a culture shock for me, having grown up in E. Texas. But was damn cool. Been a fan ever since.

I saw this band in 1994 in a hole in the wall appropriately called, "The Hole In The Wall" on the drag in Austin. They're pretty excellent in concert. Later, when they covered this, I caught them at some redneck concert my sister dragged me to.

If you get a chance, see them or buy a record. They're good.

Thanks subby. I always here this on The Brewing Network podcast and had no idea where it came form. TBN is a great show for you brewing geeks out there.

I got this off of Napster. The original Napster.

I saw them do this in 96-97 at the electric lounge, but the real show stopper was their cover of Steve Earle's copperhead road.

I also like their song that goes "Spend the whole damn day just sittin' round the house." Don't know what it was called, but I remember it after one hearing from over a decade ago!

InmanRoshi 2008-06-29 05:27:04 PM
Yeah, they're not a cover band but a lot of times they'll end the show with a cover because they're crowd pleasers.

Can't forgot to add Jonathan Coulton's folk version of "Baby Got Back" to the favorite WTF song list.
