Yet another reason why suburban/exurban sprawl is awful.

Actually, going by what's in the Bible, God appears to have at least a passing fancy for desolate stretches of desert. They may be on to something, here.

If only there were some way to generate power in the desert near where it is needed.

Well, the transmission infrastructure in the US badly needs upgrading, but don't let that stop you from NIMBYing your way into blackouts.

I still think mini-arcologies like arcosanti are the way to go. then againk I have a thing for sci-fi concepts like arcologies.

No need for more people to live there.

Biodiesel and solar power for each individual arcology/town. maximize water recycling too.

*sigh*

Nobody will do it tho.

Arizona doesn't need solar.

It already has this:

Palo Verde Nucular Generating station. Largest in the USA.

Don't want horrible power lines? Stop whining and spend some cash to get them underground. Better yet, spend some cash and get some solar panels. Anyway, it sounds like another whiny group of people that doesn't want to part with any cash to keep their pristine view.

I live in Arizona so I'm getting a kick...blah blah blah

Seriously though, the desert is actually beautiful and full of life. I personally seriously dislike trying to take a picture of a bird soaring in the air.... and being unable to get a pic without power lines running thru.

Personally... I say we all find ways to produce our own power and be liberated from power companies forever!!

/Don't mind me... I didn't get enough sleep last night.

Are these people living in HOA's???

Well then they are Nazis and who gives a F*ck about them and there precious views. Next they will complain about water pipe lines connecting to their kitchen tap and the water is all wet and gets the sink damp.

Development needs infrastructure and without government subsidy's, industry will take the lowest priced route.

well...we could also dust off Tesla's old research on directed wireless power transmission. we might actually be able to perfect the technology that he started to develop.

All Apologies 2008-06-29 12:48:38 PM
The greater Phoenix area is on course to become one giant subdivision. There are plenty of reserves throughout the sprawl, but hundreds of miles of nearly indistinguishable subdivisions and strip malls are kind of depressing. It's starting to look like California.

Yoyo 2008-06-29 12:49:07 PM
m0llusk: If only there were some way to generate power in the desert near where it is needed.

There is a way to generate power in the desert near where it's needed. Safe, clean, reliable, well tested COAL. Oh, wait, here's another way.

Funny thing about Arizona, I was at a recruiting session with APS about a year ago, and they had a slide showing their high voltage transmission lines. It looked rather feeble, so I asked one of the guys in the distribution section about the lack of redundancy in their scheme, and he assured me that was not the case at all. Then a short time later, Ta-da! Blackouts for APS customers!

I say let property rights rule. If you want a view of the desert free of obstructions, go out and buy it up. Otherwise, STFU and GBTW.

As for APS, why are they building towers, when they could easily bury these lines and achieve better reliability. No worrying about high winds or dense smoke causing the grid to go down if they're buried.

eKonk 2008-06-29 12:53:07 PM
So... people who moved into the desert, bringing powerlines that spoil other people's views are now complaining that new powerlines may be brought into the desert for other people who will move to the desert. We can only assume that the new people moving to the desert will complain about the next wave of people moving to the desert, who, oddly enough, will complain about the first people who moved to the desert because their infrastructure is outdated and an eyesore.

Or something like that.

Obergruppenfarker 2008-06-29 12:56:55 PM
Two of the three suburbs listed, Peoria and Buckeye, have the lowest housing values in the area. They already have an Air Force base and two prisons in their back yard, not to mention the countries largest nuclear power plant is about 20 miles away.

Opponents want the projects built farther away from areas where people live or are expected to live.

Then they had better put the power lines in Blythe California. This city will keep growing to the west until it hits CA.

Shiftless: to keep their pristine view.

Pristine view in a suburban setting? It's an oxymomron.

pris·tine Pronunciation (prstn, pr-stn)
adj.
1.
a. Remaining in a pure state; uncorrupted by civilization.
b. Remaining free from dirt or decay; clean: pristine mountain snow.
2. Of, relating to, or typical of the earliest time or condition; primitive or original.

A monsson is a seasonal shift in the previaling winds. The amount of rain, if any, has nothing to do with defining a Monsoon.

Arizona sucks. The desert sucks. ITS ALL DIRT. Whenever I have to fly back into town when I travel I always get depressed when everything goes from green to brown and I realize we're coming in for a landing.

Arizona can bite my ass.

Education time.

Monsoon means, A seasonal shift in the winds and by this definition, the Arizona monsoon is a legitimate monsoon. Sure they don't get the 30 inches a month that india and southeast asia gets, but it is still a legit monsoon.

Oh, and BTW, the phoenix area gets nearly 1/2 of all their rain during the monsoons.

there's a simple cure for your angst. move. if you can't do that, the benefits of living there outweigh the negatives for you. spend more time with the positives and less with the negatives - you'll be a happier person

I don't think that means what you think it means.

We're switching to an other meaning.

It used to mean a seasonal wind shift. Still does. It is also used to refer to the localized thunderstorms brought by such winds.

Old meaning: "The monsoon will be early this year".
New meaning: "There is a monsoon approaching, we're going to get wet"

You can also punt, and satisfy both meanings, by referring to such weather simply as "monsoon storms".

Old meaning: "The monsoon storms will be early this year"
New meaning: "There is a monsoon storm approaching, we're going to get wet"

/in Tucson. Hoping for some "seasonal precipitation of significant intensity" today...

That headline is awesome. I just flew into and out of Phoenix on a connecting flight. That is one ugly city. They don't have grass and trees they have dirt and blackish colored shrubs.

Ugly and ungodly hot. Can't figure out why anyone would want to live there.

shame that most of the energy produced by Palo Verde ends up being sent to LA.

As someone who was born and raised in the armpit of Virginia (read: Virginia Peninsula, just northwest of the Atlantic Oceanfront), when I got to spend some time out West I was immediately enamored with the simplistic beauty of the southwest, desert and mountains alike. Arizona and NM are on my personal "short list" of places I would love to move to and spend the rest of my days. I can even tolerate the heat a lot better than I can tolerate the humidity here. Likewise, Hurricanes can bite my arse.

That said, people complaining about power lines need to stop screaming NIMBY and start thinking about how they're going to get the electricity they so desperately crave. Unless they are going to take all the steps to take themselves "off the grid", they need to just STFU and deal with our ever increasing suburban sprawl.
