Someone will still try to say that this isn't ironic.

But I would expect to see this in a textbook of irony someday, right on the first page.

Jack Schitt 2008-06-29 11:23:33 AM
Ironic indeed

"The fire was determined to be accidental. It was caused by the overheating of a block heater plugged into the truck"

BUT, one must ask, why was the Block Heater plugged in at the end of June?

Does anyone wonder why the engine block heater was plugged in during summer? I mean I know it's PA, but it hasn't been THAT cool at night...

Dangit Jack Schitt, why am I always 30 seconds too late with my witty comments?

Rat [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 11:26:32 AM
ok, so there was 25K worth of 'put out the fire' stuff in the back that was saved from the fire. That's there some good news.

© where was I going with this? Oh yeah, Pennsylvania, nevermind.

Old urban legend. A warm engine starts better> saves fuel. Probably doesn't save enough to pay for the Hydro being used.

I work for a company that makes those service trucks. It looks like one of ours. So I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

NOT IRONIC.

/Getting it out of the way.

i ate my crayon 2008-06-29 11:35:36 AM
Not ironic.

It would only be ironic if an attempt to extinguish the truck fire using fire extinguishers somehow created a bigger blaze.

This is just coincidence.

addendum: Or if a truck carrying asbestos (or other fire-prevention materials) were to catch on fire.

mgyqmb 2008-06-29 11:45:57 AM
I'll leave the debate to you folks who enjoy that sort of thing, but I certainly would never expect a truck full of fire extinguishers to catch fire. IT'S IRONIC TO ME, DAMMIT.

theorellior 2008-06-29 11:46:08 AM
So, if a fire extinguisher got hot enough, would it explode? Would the resulting explosion put out the offending fire? Inquiring minds want to know!

If Fire extinguisher truck A were to catch fire, the extinguishers in said truck would eventually melt or explode. Which, may or may not cause the fire to put itself out. Maybe.

I think that's your answer.

dirtyfarker 2008-06-29 11:59:49 AM
Both coincidental and contradictory in a humorous or poignant and extremely improbable way - http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ironic

I think this passes for irony

goldtoof 2008-06-29 12:01:05 PM
"To save the vehicles, the firefighters attacked the blaze from the driver's side of the truck, where they had less access."

wha?

Welcome to the Machine, lol is that picture real??

theoneontheleft 2008-06-29 12:10:19 PM
Geez guys, anyone can see that's not ironic.

Fire extinguishers are only stored in places where fires are likely to break out- kitchens, laboratories, industrial warehouses, kayaks and the like. The fact that this truck was carrying MULTIPLE fire extinguishers only goes to show that it possessed a horrific tendency to burninate, and the fire was therefore expected.

improper use of the tag.

That will never happen, and if it did I would be disappointed.

/only came in here for the irony nay-sayers
//wasn't disappointed

Wait... wait, is this newsworthy because we all thought you were supposed to use trucks to put out fires?

Fire extinguishers do not prevent fires from STARTING; they put them out. A truck full of fire extinguishers CATCHING fire is no more or less ironic than any other vehicle burning. If they were unable to put out a fire on a truck full of fire extinguishers, THAT would be ironic.

This headline is no more ironic that a free ride you just didn't take, or 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife.

Wouldn't irony in this situation be the driver not even knowing it was on fire, but us reading about it anyway?

FTA:

A Block heater in the middle of summer? Sounds like a good cause of a wire...

WTF was he doing plugging in a block heater in summer. I'm from Manitoba, where the avg winter temp is -30+, and even we stop using our block heaters sometime in March/April

ssrat 2008-06-29 12:28:09 PM
Sound Ironic to me, but what do I know.
That said why did they not USE one/two of the extinguishers to put out the fire, isn't that what they are designed to do?

I'm pretty sure that the company would understand if the driver used a couple to save all the rest (though with the amount of companies that get to fark who knows).

MooseUpNorth 2008-06-29 12:29:27 PM
Hey Alanis! Pay attention!

GoldDude 2008-06-29 12:43:09 PM
I'd have to vote "NO" on ironic. Now if the fire extinguishers themselves were the cause of the fire, then yes. But what the hell is ironic about a truck catching on fire?

mikaloyd 2008-06-29 12:54:28 PM
theorellior: So, if a fire extinguisher got hot enough, would it explode? Would the resulting explosion put out the offending fire? Inquiring minds want to know!

To the first question

Maybe, but probably not. The pressure gauge is supposed to fail abd bleed off pressure before the metal body of the extinguisher fails though.

If the body of the extinguisher did rupture it is unlikely that the extinguishant would be plentiful enough and properly distributed for putting out a fire thats large enough to rupture it.

Im going to say that this probably wont happen with dry chemical extinguishers but could happen with Halon in a closed room
