My mom always just took the top off of them if she wasn't getting enough salt.

Jebus. I just mix sea salt with regular table salt. TA-DA!

Look it up if you don't believe me. Less sodium chloride and you still get iodine ;)

This will just lead to massive increases in occurances of Salter's Elbow.

People will stop calling it a Nanny State when it stops behaving like one.

FTA...I thought it was a joke. It doesn't matter how many holes it has, people are going to put on as much salt as they want.'

That's exactly right. People will either keep using the shaker until they have as much salt on their food as they did with the 17-hole shakers. Either that, or if it's food they're taking home to eat, they'll just use their own salt shaker.

It's sad to see that the U.K. is just as bad as the U.S. in wasting tax payer money.

Actually, this could be an opportunity for them. If they put a meter on each salt shaker - like the mechanism in a pedometer - then they could tax excessive salting! Social engineering through taxation always delivers the goods!

You do know about the Salt Tax, right? If so, that's pretty funny.

Up until relatively recently, the French and British governments taxed salt. Lots of other governments throughout history have done the same. They'd find out how much salt you owned, and collect money from you based on the amount. Owning "illegal" salt would get you in trouble. Gandhi staged the famous salt march in 1930 in protest.

Cutting down on salt = good idea!

And so at least six councils have ordered five-hole shakers - at taxpayers' expense - and begun giving them away to chip shops and takeaways in their areas. = BAD IDEA.

Officers collected information from businesses, obtained samples of fish and chips, measured salt content and 'carried out experiments to determine how the problem of excessive salt being dispensed could be overcome by design'

Finally battered, deep-fried fish is a healthy treat! Now maybe they can get back to work on gluten-free morphine.

On Fark it is fine to bash other countries cultures.

The UK, France, Canada, Australia and New Zealand being prime targets.

But once a forriner attacks U.S.A.(number one!) take cover.

You can just screw the top off like I have to do with many pepper shakers that are so packed full that the pepper won't come out. Why do that do that?

Me likey lots of pepper.

It's been a long damn time since John Winthrop, but America as a country still generally believes in the whole "City upon a hill" sermon, regardless of their personal faith.

Not to mention that most US history classes (that I've been in or heard about) usually run out of time before they finish World War II, so for a lot of the American history... it kind of is a city upon a hill. Relatively speaking of course. I guess what I'm saying is that some of those feelings are based on nostalgia, and the belief that the whole of American history reflects that.

/America Since 1941 was the best high school elective I ever took
//none of my European history classes ever made it to Napoleon, either

The Brits are no more "Nanny" than the US, which is bad enough. The taxes are about the same too. The Nordic countries, income tax is at 66-70% but then, the social services are fantastic.

They got it right about the food, though. Bleh.

my hero. Oh I hasten to add a Britain is currently leading the industry in fine cuisine, whatever petty little comments you yanktards might wanna add every food the Americans love and relish as their heritage the European continent has done better.. Might I mention the Hamburger vs. Steak Hache.. And Britain's top chefs trained in Paris.. and half of them spend some time in the states showing them how good food is made (i.e. Ramsay).

Impudent Domain 2008-06-29 08:05:29 AM
Gordon Ramsey and the other few men with balls left in England better get up off their arses and lead a revolution because the government and NGO types are turning Britain into a nation of pussies and castrati right before our very eyes.

You let them do away with fox hunting because after all that was just for the aristocrats, but that was just for starters. Now they are telling you how you must eat your goddamn food!. Next they will have cameras in the loo and mandate how many times you have to shake your dick after you piss.

/end rant.

I'm thinking gravyhol. I don't know how to work that one though. If I'd used gravohol it might denote gravity instead of gravy.

/Sausage gravy on biscuits
//and cheddar-scrambled eggs

What I got from the article is that the councils have apparently discovered that Brits quantify their salting by how it looks rather than how it tastes.

jjorsett: What I got from the article is that the councils have apparently discovered that Brits quantify their salting by how it looks rather than how it tastes.

Y'know, that's probably true, I don't think many people taste test their chips rather than just giving their usual shake, so it probably works once or twice, until people realise they're getting less salt.
