He stunned me with that crappy, karaoke cover. I really wanted to like it but, bleh.

JohnnyC 2008-06-29 01:52:49 AM
Seriously, I can sing that song better. :(

James William Bottomtooth 2008-06-29 01:54:55 AM
I bet he could have hit the notes if he wanted to

cameroncrazy1984 [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 02:13:47 AM
Yeah I wonder if he was either drunk or just didn't care. He can sing pretty well.

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 02:18:17 AM
so one crap artist covered another crap artist?

Crap is an understatement.

I don't know which fact disturbs me more;

That he did an awful cover song of a generally tolerable song, or that most of his fans knew the words.

ecmoRandomNumbers [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 02:47:09 AM
Hmmm... tone deaf and can't play an instrument.

I can see how he makes millions of dollars. WTF?

LandStander [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 02:56:50 AM
He did it because Noel dissed him being at Glastonbury. Pretty funny, I think.

You_mean_Im_gonna_stay_this_color [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 04:15:14 AM
I'm gonna throw a bone and say that most people (like myself) won't understand the context of this video until reading about it..

SuperCatBarf [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 04:43:50 AM
So if Jay-Z sucks, and Oasis sucks, who's good? What exactly are you people listening to? I'm curious.

Since it is a festival, there aren't just jay-z fans in the crowd. And I'd say the logical reason most people knew the lyrics, is because the festival is in England. Oasis is from England.

/Agree it was a horrible cover.

Sounds like he couldn't perform it properly to save his life, to be honest - just mumbling over the original track.

Noel was right - sales this year are way down, and most people are blaming it on Jay-Z. He's just not that big outside of your MTV-crowd.

thegonz111 2008-06-29 06:29:13 AM
I am embarrassed for the HOV. Why would you get in front of a giant crowd like that, pretend to play guitar and not know the song in your set, nevermind the opener. FFS Amy farking Winehouse could've held it together better than that turd of a preformance.

/99 problems and being tone deaf Is one

I'm pretty sure that was the point. Jay-Z isn't untalented, and he can sing pretty damn well- this was intentional.

The Gentleman Caller 2008-06-29 07:04:15 AM
PEOPLE, PEOPLE!!
He doesn't sing the whole song, just the first verse and chorus. skip past this clip and click on the one after it. its got the whole thing of the song plus a kick-ass version of 99 Problems set to Back in Black. somebody post the link, i suck.

/but a biatch ain't one!

He / she's right: there are only two recording artists out there, so who ARE you people listening to?

Thanks for posting those links You_mean_Im_gonna_stay_this_color - I forgot about the Oasis thing. What I originally saw as a terrible cover I know look at as pretty effin funny.

Captain_Creampuff 2008-06-29 09:10:48 AM
I liked it. It was clearly making fun because they had the oasis track playing in the background. It seemed like during 99 problems the guitar player got bored and started playing back in black

Bigmada [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 09:44:36 AM
That was painful to watch

JerseyTim [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 09:52:09 AM
It's clearly a pisstake. Noel Gallagher said before the show that rap artists don't belong at Glastonbury. He's having a little fun.

/do they call him Jay-Zed?

rich lather 2008-06-29 10:01:32 AM
is it still a cover when you sing over the original track? if so i'm taking the show i do everyday in my car to the club. see you farkers on mtv!

Thanks, You_mean_Im_gonna_stay_this_color. I wish there was a way to prevent people from posting their thoughts until after they read through the links you provided.

When I saw the video I was like :-\
Then when I read the link I LOL'd

Well done, Jay-Z

are you talking about Jay Z, or Oasis here? Because the same could happily be said for both. Only Jay Z might actually admit it, and call them 'samples' as opposed to pure plagiarism.

/not really a fan of either.

Control_this [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 10:48:12 AM
I won't believe he's ridiculing Oasis unless somebody gets shot.

TwistedIvory [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 11:24:13 AM
ARRRRGH! I like that song, but not when it's sung by strangled cats.

Passive Aggressive Larry [TotalFark] 2008-06-29 11:40:36 AM
At first that did just seem really shiatty, but then I sort of picked up on that it seems like its mocking the song instead. Sure enough after reading the link someone posted in the thread, I think that was the intention, which I think is a nice way to dig at the douche from Oasis. That is one of the wussiest popular rock songs of all time, sung with a bit of a whiny British accent. In other words, the perfect song to mock.

maxx2112 2008-06-29 11:42:41 AM
I've never understood the appeal of that song. It's an okay pop song, but it's not all that.

carmody 2008-06-29 11:49:06 AM
I think it's adorable because it shows that no matter how rich, powerful and genuinely awesome Jay-Z is...he still fantasizes about being able to simply sing. I actually went, "Aaaaawwwwww..."

/I can sing.

Third Day Mark 2008-06-29 11:58:10 AM
Jeeze... that went from one of the coolest things I could possibly hear to "Uh, I'm going to have to try hard to forget that." He didn't even get half the lyrics right. At the end the crowd takes over the singing duties. Cool concept, not executed well at all.

Mortician 2008-06-29 12:02:17 PM
I would believe that he can hit the right notes if he wanted to.

After still being explained through out the thread and a rocking version of 99 Problems posted, people are still zooming through here to post in ignorance. This thread is full of fail and Jay-Z isn't one of them.

/not a fan of either artist

Can't believe farkers are getting so riled up about Jay-Z singing poorly for 60 seconds during what was essentially a joke. You're telling me that if you were there, and you knew about all the controversy surrounding his headlining the festival (as everyone at Glastonbury did), you wouldn't have been thrilled by that opening? The crowd was loving it, singing along with enthusiasm; they already knew they were in for a sick hip hop show, and obviously enjoyed the opening as well, even if, as the tape clearly shows, it wasn't Jay-Z's forte.

lsc78: Take away the beat machines and vocoders and these guys are revealed

not sure who "these guys" are, but hopefully you're not referring to all hip hop artists.

inversehiphop.files.wordpress.com

Definitely not a talentless hack.
