No, but they could be a crucial voting bloc in a number of swing states. For the first time in over 25 years, North Carolina and Virginia are swing states. Even northern Georgia is in play - especially if Bob Barr can maintain his 6% of the vote.

He could easily win without a single Southern state.

Here's from dictionary dot com:
Ap·pa·la·chi·a (new window)
Pronunciation Key [ap-uh-ley-chee-uh, -chuh, -lach-ee-uh, -lach-uh]

I live here and say app-a-latch-a and app-a-la-chin. But I'm not a native. I think it's a matter of preference.

Your reading comprehension is sub-par at best. I am NOT a Floridian. I just maintained my voter registration because there it might actually make a difference.

Try again.

And I never called anyone "stupid." Racist, yes, stupid, no.

I could split hairs on the idiocy of racism, but you're right. It was a silly overreaction.

I do have a little hope for Florida, but not too much. At least Florida's votes are sometimes close. What is NOT close is the voting trend which is visible throughout Appalachia if you were to look at polling results by county.

Again, you're right. I was standing on my "Jump to Conclusions" mat.

Obama Campaign: "Oh shi..."

hyperspacemonkey 2008-06-29 04:25:40 AM
I guess the paragraph about the mobile dentist might be the most important part of the article. This is a really tough test of American democracy. Can the candidates even get the attention of the poorest voters in America, who live the farthest away from wealth and amenities common in other states? I agree with the submitter! They are so alienated that appealing to them in an election is cause for panic. Obama's race might not be all that important if he can just connect with them on some practical level. Dentistry, even. These are the Americans who would benefit the most from not having to buy medical/dental insurance to get their teeth looked at. That is, if the article is accurate.

Just because someone is an idiot, and you notice it, doesn't mean you hate them, or have no compassion for them. And, if you notice they're idiots, it probably does mean you have some intelligence.

If the left behaved otherwise, you would just accuse them of Political Correctness and vilify them (sorry for using vilify, you can look it up.) for that.

It's a shame you have no idea what you're talking about and it's even doubtful that understand the definition of the words you use because addressing anything you post seems to end up an exercise in insipidity.

The Beacon Man: Only hate.

As I used to tell you when you were using your AfterLunchDeficitDisorder screen name, never confuse contempt with hatred. While they may be similar they are very different emotions.

The Beacon Man: /There's no hate like liberal hateTM

There is no hate like the kind bigots feed on.

Somehow I don't think the poster went to appalachia and used honest observation to determine people there are idiots.

I am not an empty political shill and simply accuse him of X, Y or Z for the mere purpose of disagreeing because you may be on the left or right.

Interesting little known fact: The Banjo as an instrument originated in Africa and was brought to the US by African Slaves. (new window) Once you think of this and look at it, you realize it has a few distinct differences from any other European instruments and sort of looks like a djembe with the bottom cut off and some strings across it.

Also interesting I think: What to many people becomes just some kind of hillbilly music actually differentiates into 5 or 6 different kinds of music, such as bluegrass, mountain music, old-time, folk, and a few others I can't remember right now at this early hour. It also shares certain rhythms and ideas with both blues and jazz. This music, although associated with intolerance and racism today, is actually pretty steeped in this rich cultural history, and in fact most of today's practitioners of bluegrass music are very progressive, cut from the folk music mold.

TMYK.

I don't really have much to share, but I like West Virginia. It's a beautiful state full of delicious biscuits.

After years of stoking rural hatred of urban and suburban folk, I suspect the GOPers are going to get what's been coming for them. Once again, McCain et. al are going to run on a platform of demonizing people from big cities as being godless liberal wimps who want to make your children gay. You can only stoke regional tensions so much before it backfires.

Oh, hey, here's a few billion for the ghettos. No, you don't have to make your kids go to school. That would be selling out on your rich heritage. And we're all good with you continuing to blame every problem on whitey, just remember who gave you this sack of money when you're in that voting booth.

All McCain has to do is win the same states Bush won in 04 and he's the Prez. Since the Jews in Florida don't like Obamer cuz he isn't perceived as a strong supporter of Israel, Florida's in the bag for McCain; Ohio has a high population of the aforementioned hillbillies who will most likely vote for McCain and not the "colored guy."
It's really too bad none or our ballots will have "None of the Above" as a choice.

Euell Gibbons: I love how the fluffy city folk hate hillbillies.

I reread the entire thread and didn't see a single person attacking hillbillies, I do see people concerned about bigots who will pick their next president solely because of his race.

I live right on the edge of Appalachia and was originally born in Boston. I got to watch hundreds of loving mothers throw rocks at buses full of scared children who were forced to be bussed into white schools.

So, if anyone is to be painted with that wide brush you're sporting, how about going after the bigots?

I do not like living here (TN). I don't like a lot of the people for a number of reasons, but I dislike the attitudes of outsiders towards this region even more, particularly as many choose not to ever see what it's like for themselves or go solely for purposes of reinforcing their prejudices. These same people hold southerners, particularly Appalachians, beneath contempt, wish for their disenfranchisement/ destruction, and then turn around and try to claim they are the tolerant ones.

WTF?

Prejudice against southerners is the last acceptable bigotry in society. No bigotry should be acceptable.

And disliking people =/= prejudice. I interact with them on a daily basis and have grounds for saying, "I don't like that people here do X, Y, and Z." That's a far cry from, "We should've just let them secede," or calling them names.

I get the sense that "Appalachian" has become a PC term for hick, hillbilly, redneck, even though scores of people meeting that criteria live all over the country.
