"Two of the officers are reportedly on modified duty."

WTF. Anyone else would be in jail and on the fast track to spending a few decades in prison.

This kind of thing happens all the time.

/never trust a cop

Ron Paul Revere: They should, at the very least, be suspended without pay pending termination. When a DA comes out in court and declares a defendant's innocence, there is little doubt. DAs do not do that.

Don't forget that the cops who murdered that 92 year old lady in Atlanta. They raided her house on a drug warrant, that used knowingly fabricated information, were acquitted and only got 5 year sentences.

In the 6 months it took to clear the Colon brothers names, they lost their business and their savings.

The NYPD is investigating the officers involved in this incident. Two of the officers are reportedly on modified duty.

And people wonder why nobody trusts the cops anymore.

feckingmorons [TotalFark] 2008-06-28 09:31:23 PM
I was a cop (for 9 months then laid off due to budget cuts, the job sucked so I did something else) but even I think this is BS.

I would have arrested the cops if I found out they did this, modified duty my arse.

Obviously NYC has too many cops if they can spend time doing this. Just have half of them investigate crimes, and have the other half stand on various street corners acting as a deterrent as much as they can to other crimes.

Don't let them conspire to violate citizens' Civil Rights.

We never had time for this crap, I went from one call to the next with seldom a break to take a leak at 7-11.

Goopotato: COP HATER THREAD!!

Kinda hard not to be when the hate seem to be justified.

I'd love to be able to trust the police, but stories like this are not uncommon. When I start seeing cops who pull this stuff get life without parole and departments publicly exposing bad cops and driving them from their ranks, then we can talk about trusting the police again.

Cops convicted of duty related crimes should be forced to wear their uniforms in prison.

"Defense lawyers say it's disturbing but not uncommon.

"As defense attorneys you know it exists more often than government wants you to believe," said Brad Wolk.

Just needs repeating, no further comment.

simpsonfan:

That's funny.

The only problem I've ever had with police officers was in Cincinnati. In Clifton students were throwing a big party across the street from us and it got out of hand. The cops were called and the police were using crazy force on kids at the party. My friend is a photographer and started taking pictures. One of the cops came over and told her to stop taking pictures. She said she was on her property and had a right to take pictures. He grabbed the camera, maced her, and then arrested her for disorderly conduct.

The cops in my neighborhood in Indy have been completely awesome. They are on their shiat here.

Those unethical farkers should be fired on the spot and subject to FEDERAL prosecution. If you hold a law enforcement job (or any job that gains trust from the general public), and you do something you KNOW you shouldn't do... you should get the worst possible punishment allowable by law.

Fluffy_the_cactus: Those unethical farkers should be fired on the spot and subject to FEDERAL prosecution.

You must have forgotten. The current administration sees nothing wrong with what they did. You know, no more habeas corpus, just plant it, blah blah.

The LAST thing the defendants/victims want is Federal "assistance".

She plead because it was our word against his. She ended up with community service.

Such a crappy night. Her face was swollen and red all night. Had to call her parents in Columbus to wire money to bail her out.

"Modified duty", heh. Doubtfully means modified pay, modified access to guns, modified police powers, or modified access to personal information of civilians. Police unions, gotta love 'em.

You know how when you walk into the kitchen late at night for some water or something and you see that lone roach skittering across the counter like some perusing shopper? You may squish it, but you know there are literally hundreds more you can't see.

Because the cops get special treatment. If you or I had gotten caught trying to frame an officer of the law for a crime they did not commit, we'd be in jail awaiting trial. But as you can see here, there is a clear double standard when it comes to policing the police. They are quite literally above the law.

That's just the way it is these days.

TheStaffAce 2008-06-28 10:59:00 PM
Duct tape them to a chair and let the Colon Bros. have 5 minutes in a room with NO CAMERAS.

/I suggest using a broom handle.
//And then cut off their eyelids and stake them in the desert.

CruiserTwelve [TotalFark] 2008-06-28 11:01:51 PM
When police departments lower their standards in the name of "diversity" this shiat happens. When you hire criminals to be cops, you get criminals, not cops. It doesn't matter that these guys were cops, they were first and foremost criminals.

Having said that, bear in mind that this story comes from the defense side. Things are not always what they seem.

Wasn't this an episode on Law & Order already?

mabelkitty 2008-06-28 11:06:49 PM
No wonder cops are so anti-gun - they don't want interference from the masses when committing their own crimes.

/Hearts the Supreme Court ruling

ReverendJasen 2008-06-28 11:06:57 PM
trendon: I really want to see the arguments on this one from those who sniff the jocks of the police.

"But those Colon brothers were assuredly bad men, the cops only framed them because they lacked other evidence to prove their wrongdoing. Cops don't arrest innocent people, because no one is innocent. So when arrested for a crime you didn't commit, just consider yourself graced to be in the presence of these gods among men. Take pleasure in knowing that every beating and tazing you get is one step closer to salvation."

Now that I think about it, perhaps this guy (new window) was right when he said it was good to kill cops. You just have to kill the right ones.

FTFA: proof that lead prosecutors to drop charges against the four men, and even declare in court the men did not commit the crime.

When the prosecutors are saying on the record in open court that the defendants didn't do it....

From your page: "This is the easiest way for police officers to get around the need for a search warrant, and your consent will allow them to use anything they find against you."

Even if they planted it...

I've read quite a few of your stories on your page (and I've liked them all). I'm certain you've thought about the possible repercussions of your "dissent".

It would be too bad if they "found" a kilo of coke between the bulkheads of one of your planes "suspected" of running drugs (or Barky the Drug Dog just "happened" to pass by the hull, and alerted).

Thoughts?
