-1 for using "snowflake."

I think the headline is spot on and I was gratified to read the article. Made my day. +1

Voting against the precious little snowflake culture. First step: let your kids play in the front yard and ride their bikes on the street.

ooooh, dangerous.

Chariset [TotalFark] 2008-06-28 08:35:36 PM
I remember only once getting an award just so I wouldn't feel left out. I had no idea why I had received it, and I was confused the rest of the week.

Everyone-gets-prizes is there to let adults avoid the discomfort of telling kids things they don't want to hear. It's not there to improve the kid's self esteem

This!

The kids can handle it. It's that adults that do all the hand-wringing.

2wolves 2008-06-28 09:00:50 PM
Any kid that makes it to 13 without three scars isn't trying.

H_is_for_Heretic 2008-06-28 09:14:29 PM
Another, Jeanette, was concerned that her daughter's teachers would not correct spelling mistakes, "because she was spelling the words how you said them", nor correct her writing when she drew letters back to front.

Bullshiat that they didn't. That didn't happen.

KyngNothing [TotalFark] 2008-06-28 09:15:04 PM
Epstein's recollections of his own childhood evoke an utterly different world. Parents didn't feel the need to micro-manage their children's lives. He doesn't remember his parents reading to him, or turning up to watch him compete at athletics. They left it to him to decide which foreign language to study at secondary school and weren't much bothered that he was a mediocre student.

Ummm, reading to your kid is not "precious little snowflake syndrome", it's parenting... By the same token, I'd have no problem if his parents took him to task for being mediocre, it's when they go after the teachers for his mediocrity that it's a problem...

Lane83 [TotalFark] 2008-06-28 09:39:26 PM
Why is either side so extreme? Why is it either "toughen the little bastards up 'cuz life is hard and they need to understand it!" and "everything will be alright as long as we let them know they're loved!"

What ever happened to the idea of a healthy balance? It is possible to both love your children, be attentive to them, and not smother them. Kids can learn to be proud of themselves and not be under unrealistic pressure while at the same time teaching them to be responsible and sensible people. All it takes is a little... what's that word... oh yeah, effort! on the parent's part.

/Disclosure: both parents are teachers, so I see up-close the effects of neglect and helicoptering.
//My parents showed up to my ball games (but strangely not my debate matches) and read to me as a child, but let me know that some things like effort in school and financial responsibility were required.
///Turned out OK.

Maybe I am missing something.

I thought "precious little snowflake" culture was the whole "Everyone has to be a winner", "Everyone should get to play", "Everyone is special all the time", etc, deal.

Your two examples are (A) unfortunately recognizing that there are more people out there brazen enough to try to snatch a 7 year old, especially depending on the area, and (B) not wanting your 7 year old to get run over. Not, in my book, part of the "snowflake" issue.

Frank N Stein 2008-06-28 09:56:06 PM
My Dad: Well, you're 18 now. When are you leaving

Two weeks later, I'm in bootcamp

Being born in 1986, and smack dab in the middle of this "snowflake" generation, I like to think that I wasn't coddled at all.

Its actually kinda sad to see the kids of the helicopter parents become complete trash with no respect for anything.

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-06-28 09:59:02 PM
dletter: there are more people out there brazen enough to try to snatch a 7 year old,

Actually there aren't. Abduction by a stranger remains very rare.

SirGnarls [TotalFark] 2008-06-28 10:07:24 PM
STBY, Frank N Stein!

24 and rockin the Fark moniker like a vandal at the rents, babay!

Oh, and this snowflake BS has got to stop. A quick "good job" or "nice work" and move on is all these adults should be doing for the little kids. They don't need nearly as much "praise" as they get now. They should be getting advice and coaching on how to get better, not "everyone gets a prize regardless" crap. Those that get ahead in life are the ones that have adversity and overcome it. Those that seem to be without any, more than likely will not succeed in life. Give the kids a little adversity, instead of snowflaking them, and watch them truly grow into their own.

Adman12 [TotalFark] 2008-06-28 10:23:56 PM
I protect my son from serious preventable injury, but not from getting his feelings hurt. So I guess I'm kind of in the middle.

Lane83: ///Turned out OK.

Lots of people turn out okay, and always will, as long as they're loved and aren't abused or neglected. That's the real truth about parenting: it doesn't really do as much to invent the person as you want to think it does. Genetics and peer influence are huge factors.

Really, parenting is about providing the kid with reasonable opportunities to succeed and fail, and being the support and backup they need to take chances and pick themselves up after a massive fail. Everything else is just there to sell books.

1. Let the kid get dirty.

2. Let the kid skin their knee. It isn't fatal.

3. Let the kid lose. The real world hardly ever gives you the win.

Death to sissy parents raising sissy kids.

You know what I say? "fark the children!" Now, I don't mean fark the children, I mean fark the children.

jbernie 2008-06-28 11:02:05 PM
The adults can't handle seeing their child left out because it makes them look like a bad parent to themselves when no one else really gives a flying fark. The kids for the most part don't have a clue about what all the fuss is about, and just want to play / participate / etc.

About time some reality took hold. Not even can come first in sports, not everyone can play the lead in the school play, not everyone can get the highest score in exams.

It is life, deal with it parents.

Begoggle 2008-06-28 11:02:46 PM

Britain (where the article originates). is far too entrenched in this business already to be able give up on it for decades. They are a little farther down this road than we are.

This. While you're at it quit using anti-bacterial everything on your children. Their immune systems won't be worth shiat when they get older. I ate crap off the floor, played in the dirt and wandered around in the woods behind my house when I was growing up, and I very, very rarely get ill. Suck it up you pussies.

Spare the rod, castor oil, or tying to a tree overnight and spoil the child

hell, for the first time in 30 years I have a dog (German shepard pup, 13 weeks). All the training guides says not to punish bad behaviour - WTF? My 13 yo kid definitely knows when she screws up.

There are a lot of things in our society that really piss me off, but when I am ranting against the world I leave kids out of it.

For me, the backlash started after George Carlin's "f*ck the children" bit years ago. Brilliant piece of philosophy there.

danger kart: I like the snowflake culture - it makes me look that much better in the workplace because I was raised by parents who "knew" what they were doing.

You're part of the snowflake problem with your high self-esteem there kiddo. No one actually thinks you are capable of doing anything correctly let alone independently

My plan is working perfectly. Soon, my non-coddled child minions will be able to take over this world. Wuahahahahahahaha!

EsteeFlwrPot 2008-06-28 11:07:40 PM
Good. Maybe parents will start hitting their kids again so they can stop acting like self entitled animals and learn to be a proper adult.

Yakk 2008-06-28 11:08:15 PM
Another thread/story about how the current generation of children are so spoiled and feel so entitled and how it was different back in "our day".

I am calling shenanigans on this whole "snowflake" Fark meme.

/lawns, check it.
