"We think it's fleeting" said Michelle Meyer, economist with Lehman Brothers... "Faced with high prices of food, fuel, and decreasing home values, consumers "will ultimately pull back once the rebate has been spent," she said.

Gosh, that really sounds effective.

I've got news for you retard.

Giving people free money ALWAYS increases disposable income.

The point of this money WASN'T TO HAVE PEOPLE SAVE IT.

PEOPLE SAVING MONEY != PEOPLE NOT SPENDING MONEY.

PEOPLE NO SPENDING MONEY = PEOPLE NOT BUY STUFF

PEOPLE NOT BUYING STUFF = PEOPLE GET LAID OFF

jesus farking tranny balls you trolls are stupid today.

4 and a half months until the ELECTION, and then 2 and a half months after THAT.

Everyone is using their "stimulus" money to buy gas. So what they REALLY did was give his oil buddies $600 cash for each taxpayer in the US, because just writing out a check to the oil bigs would draw too much attention.

Great Republican platform. If the Republicans promise to take all the money from the rich and give it to the poor, I may just again vote for that broken POS party that once freed the slaves and set aside millions upon millions of acres of parkland.

It didn't work then either...

Psychohazard 2008-06-28 09:45:05 PM
The stimulus package was a least some measure of trickle-up economics as opposed to trickel-down. That said, all it did was devalue the dollar more, causing oil to go higher, farking up our economy, blah blah blah.

So according to this statistic, the average American has roughly $10,000 worth of disposable income... considering that the average American household income is around $46,300 I'm gonna go ahead and call bullshait on this one.

DeltaXi65 [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-06-28 10:08:36 PM
Plenty of people think the stimulus is/was good. I have no problems with the government giving me back some of the money I've paid it in taxes.

It is unfortunate that not everyone who paid taxes gets a check, and that some people who paid no taxes did. But that was the compromise that had to be made in order to get the thing passed.

dangelder 2008-06-28 10:11:14 PM
I took my $600 and a midmonth paycheck, and opened a new account at a credit union. I honestly think the economy's going to hit a massive bottom in 2009 sometime, and I want to be ready to invest in America...the suckers.

The point is that a check to me is a good thing for me but at this moment in time it is NOT good for the economy. The corps are not investing the money they receive in new capital. They are not hiring new people. They are socking it away. What this means is the economy is not growing and that extra money introduced into the economy is doing nothing but causing inflation.

DBrandisNC 2008-06-28 10:15:46 PM
I don't think subby got the memo about the government asking for all this "stimulus" money back around April of next year.

IdeasGuy 2008-06-28 10:21:56 PM
That people would save all of their stimulus rebate is a well know phenomenon in Economics. It is called Ricardian Equivalence (new window)

sarcastrophe 2008-06-28 10:22:52 PM
It's not a stimulus check, it's a welfare check. From those of us that paid (or will pay) for it, you're welcome.

/didn't get jack.

It's not extra money. It's just a tax rebate. It's no different in inflationary terms than a tax refund check is.

Whatever effect it has on the economy is likely to be marginal, but I am a firm believer that the American taxpayer can spend his own money better than the government can. And that includes blowing it on hookers and beer.

modestlivinglegend 2008-06-28 10:27:09 PM
China is communist. Get that through your fat fat heads and stop investing there dammit. And stop spending your stimulus checks on Chinese products too.

If memory serves, that was an advance on each tax refund, and more time-shifting of money than anything else.

This most recent $150+B bit was not an advance, but merely additional debt that still needs to be paid back. Assuming that people's taxes will not be adjusted regressively, it's a shift from higher-income taxpayers to lower-income earners (but not the lowest earners, because there was a minimum income level to collect anything at all).

Maybe I'm confused, but I don't understand how the gov't can be giving the people money back while spending a zillion dollars a day in Iraq...typical conservative BS - they love to spend on defense - they just don't want to pay for it.

Nope, not at all. It is extra money. If they hadn't passed the package it was not yours, it was the gov'ts.

It is called pawning debt onto our grandchildren. Rebuplicans are good at it. Not even Countrywide would give them a loan with their credit rating.

Thank you Democratic Congress!!!

Not really...the 'stimulus' was just a bipartisan circle-jerk in an election year.

KramericaWallet 2008-06-28 10:40:09 PM
Money is free (for you). Your kids and grandkids will pay for it.

Yes, Obama is a dick for wanting another rebate. At the very least they should limit it to people below a certain (not too high) income.

That's where we have a significant difference in fundamental philosophy. I consider it mine and yours (assuming you pay taxes), not the governments. And I think you'd do a better job spending it than government can.
