Whoops, that article was about METEOR. My bad.

Slamguy: Lol asteroids are harmless

Do we really have the ability to reliably detect and intercept a Tunguska-sized object? Wasn't it only like 50 feet across?

Which would you rather deal with: asteroids or hemorrhoids? (assuming they have the same diameter)

I realize this is Fark, but Asteroids is serious business: The increasing urgency of the bass line, increased assaults by smaller and more aggressive alien saucers, and the threat of explosion in hyperspace...our only true escape.

I, for one, support this bold legislation!

My dad's got asteroids. Some days it's so bad, he can't even sit on the pot.

"Having ended the war in Iraq, stabilized oil prices and conquered global warming, US House passes bill protecting us from asteroids"

This is far from silly to anyone with even a basic understanding of the world outside our little planet.

Ron Paul Revere: adjective: This is far from silly to anyone with even a basic understanding of the world outside our little planet.

The point was that we have much more pressing problems to be dealt with than the off-chance that an asteroid might hit us.

To be honest, I am really OK with them spending money on this. One in a million...people win the lottery everyday and die in plane crashes. I'd prefer to be prepared instead of letting hubris be our guide.

It hasn't worked out so well for us in the past.

WorldCitizen [TotalFark] 2008-06-28 08:41:38 PM
So submitter would rather us stay ignorant about potential threats that could destroy our cities or civilization? If you don't think it happens, think Siberia 100 years ago and watch footage of Shoemaker-Levy Nine smashing into Jupiter.

Of course, as this is a threat to everyone, I think other countries should be chipping in to pay for this as well.

EbolaNYC [TotalFark] 2008-06-28 08:50:58 PM
Gee subby, you don't seem to realize that it's kinda important to keep that from happening if possible.

You know, when this has happened in the past, it didn't work out so well.

Douche

The chances may be small but the stakes are high. An asteroid or meteor colliding with the earth could cause serious damage to human civilization and the ecosystem. Read more by clicking on the link in that clever, 2nd post titled "lol asteroids are harmless."

/It was a meteor, though.

While in general I hate the government spending money on anything, attempting to protect the planet from total annihilation by a giant ass space rock isn't a bad idea. It happened to the dinosaurs, and can happen to us.

Still a better use of money than welfare IMO.

way south 2008-06-28 10:58:10 PM
Its nice to see them doing something... only they aren't.
According to the article they are going to track one rock while coming up with a plans on how to alert agencies when another rock falls.

It is something.
...but its not the kind of "find rocks, blow up rocks, and establish footholds for humanity in other places just in case rocks wipe earth out" statement I'd have liked to see at this point.

The religious man thinks we're chosen, the scientist thinks we're lucky. In the end they'll probably both be proven wrong.
Having a contingency plan wouldn't hurt.

ComicBookGuy 2008-06-29 12:15:23 AM
Well, certainly anything that can smack into the earth and wipe out life as we know it is nothing to be concerned about as subby implies.

Cyber_Junk 2008-06-29 03:11:53 AM
Can't wait for the political ad suggesting that a candidate was FOR asteroids before he was AGAINST them...

\an asteroid defense is a good idea though, nothing worse than losing your planet to being thrifty.

Phil Moskowitz 2008-06-29 05:19:55 AM
NEO's are a big deal. There should be a farking plan.

mig15fagot 2008-06-29 08:01:59 AM
I think that we should just constantly bombard the sky with AAA.

Dhusk 2008-06-29 08:29:31 AM
You people whining about the 'absurdity' of asteroids as threats need to be reminded that you have a better chance of being killed by an asteroid than you ever will of winning millions in the lottery. And yet how many of you still buy lottery tickets every week?

Even a 'minor' strike like the Tunguska impact could potentially kill millions. An early detection system is the least of the precautions we should take.

mig15fagot 2008-06-29 09:10:55 AM
Good point. Let's build a giant force shield.
