I prefer Judi Dench's Fish and Chips

Combo #007 from Judi Dench's Fish & Chips might be tough to get a hold of.

And didn't we just have an article with the Queen asked to "curtail" her spending at a scant $650 million or so?

The Crown Estates makes around £200 million a year for The Treasury.

I often wonder just how stupid the average American is. Fark always answers this question for me.

The Crown Estate purchased the Bath Road Retail Park.
This was a real estate deal. The queen did not buy a McDonalds or any of the other businesses in the retail park.
The queen is the landlady to all the businesses that lease space in the park. Rents are currently 5.3 million pounds annually.

Didn't Lyndon H. Larouche, Jr. predict this would happen?

And just what sort of lackeys and scullery maids is the Queen employing downstairs nowadays if they "wouldn't grumble" at some McDo?

It's like some kind of Giles cartoon come to life, speaking of Communists.

God love him!

Forced Perspective: Yesterday's article/headline: The Queen's top officials are warning her to clamp down on spending because she only has about $635 million left to her name (new window)

?????

In Her Majesty's defence (no, I'm not a Brit, but I'll write in the Queen's English), the purchase of the retail park should be viewed as an investment, not a frivolous expense. This will yield monthly income from leases. The real estate should appreciate over time, although it could depreciate short term.

Sure from pictures from the article, London is surely starting to appear like Anytown, USA.

FarkinNortherner [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-06-28 05:45:57 PM
The Queen doesn't own the Crown Estate in any meaningful sense, as the monarchy is an institution, not an individual, and its trustees are legally obliged to maximise the return to the Treasury. The notional 66p per person the Queen costs us is paid in return for the Crown Estate revenue being passed to the state.

Dialectic: Sure from pictures from the article, London is surely starting to appear like Anytown, USA.

That's in Slough, not London, and its bleakness was ever thus:

Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn't fit for humans now,
There isn't grass to graze a cow.
Swarm over, Death!

Come, bombs and blow to smithereens
Those air -conditioned, bright canteens,
Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans,
Tinned minds, tinned breath.

Mess up the mess they call a town-
A house for ninety-seven down
And once a week a half a crown
For twenty years.

And get that man with double chin
Who'll always cheat and always win,
Who washes his repulsive skin
In women's tears:

And smash his desk of polished oak
And smash his hands so used to stroke
And stop his boring dirty joke
And make him yell.

But spare the bald young clerks who add
The profits of the stinking cad;
It's not their fault that they are mad,
They've tasted Hell.

It's not their fault they do not know
The birdsong from the radio,
It's not their fault they often go
To Maidenhead

And talk of sport and makes of cars
In various bogus-Tudor bars
And daren't look up and see the stars
But belch instead.

In labour-saving homes, with care
Their wives frizz out peroxide hair
And dry it in synthetic air
And paint their nails.

Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough
To get it ready for the plough.
The cabbages are coming now;
The earth exhales

Trance750: I wonder how much money the Queen siphoned from the working-class to buy her own private Mc'Ds.

She didn't buy her own private McDonalds, RTFA, she bought a retail park near Windsor Castle that happens to have a McDonalds in it, along with a bunch of other stores. Nothing unusual, just adding more property into her portfolio. The Royal Family owns a lot of revenue generating property you know.

RubberFootMan: The Crown Estates makes around £200 million a year for The Treasury.

Not to mention that they bring in more tourist dollars to the UK every year then the amount of tax money that goes to them. They generate revenue for the UK, which is why you won't see a big push from citizens there to abolish the Monarchy any time soon. Most people who rail against them with the "I can't believe there is still a Monarchy in this day and age" or "the royal family are a bunch of parasites", etc. really don't know very much about how it works. My GF is a brit, most brits see them as amusing celebrities to be ignored for the most part but hey tourists like to come and look at their castles and spend money here so who cares.

She can have the one on Ventura Bl here in the valley. (Los Angeles) The last time I was there, the drive thru is put on the wrong side. So when you get to the window, it is on the passenger side of the car. But this would be perfect for the UK. Since they drive on the left side, drivers are on the right side of the car.
