soooo, the people most likely to afford gas 7 years from now (when it's $45/gal.) will be the least likely to actually buy it...

Informative article. NOT!

Yeah, they're probably going all diesel. Six of one, half-dozen of another.

Gldm 2008-06-28 01:15:39 PM
Seems pretty obvious to me. Gas is going up so fast that all the car companies are starting to de-mothball their electric research. You think they're starting these projects from scratch? They've been working on them for decades. Watch gas hit $10/gal and you will not believe how fast this shiat switches over. I predict that by late 2010 we'll be seeing all electric options from at least 3 major manufacturers selling in the US. It's not going to take us 20 years to switch, it'll be more like 5, because those in the know have seen it coming way before the rest of us were clued in.

"We were interesting in developing a global strategy for the future, one that was based on something other than the recommendations of that obsttorte Jimmy Carter," a senior Mercedes-Benz official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

A crank site linking another crank site. Now there is a credible news source.

The only way this can possibly be true is if the company plans to reduce it self to a fraction of its current size. eliminating petroluem use from their product line in that time is not otherwise possible,

Having just watched Zeitgeist a couple of days ago, I can't help but come up with the insane conspiracy that the rich white men who own everything purposefully drove up the price of gas to make half the population poor, then they'll remove gas vehicles and the gas infrastructure so people have to take out huge loans to buy electric cars. But what do I know?

rjShadow [TotalFark] 2008-06-28 01:22:36 PM
What energy source will we be powering these cars with then? Beer farts? Let me guess, troll hopes and dreams?

Remember - unless we come up with an alternative energy source, all of these cars are just automotive masturbation.

A link to an article with some actual content about how Mercedes Benz plans to get there. (new window)

Lots of diesel hybrids and electric vehicles, basically. Still, they're not going to be affordable for most people who need vehicles, and it makes me wonder whether fuel-cell vehicles are as likely as some people think, considering that MB has gone in a whole different direction. Toyota/Honda/Nissan/GM/Ford are most likely to bring the new form of energy used in vehicles to the market.

Preston Preston 2008-06-28 01:23:46 PM
Hal Jalykakik: Yeah, they're probably going all diesel. Six of one, half-dozen of another.

Except you can make diesel from biomass pretty easily, that is.

Disinseminator 2008-06-28 01:27:01 PM
Yes, the plan is to eliminate the need for petroleum to fuel MB's vehicles. Biodiesel will figure prominently...although the real question is how available that fuel will be.

Won't make a huge difference from an emissions standpoint unless the electric cars are numerous and charged by nuclear power.

dipdunk 2008-06-28 01:27:06 PM
Maybe they've gotten some sort of hydrogen or fuel cell technology in the pipeline and expect to deploy it in 3-4 years. Didn't they have a V6 hydrogen prototype on display in Dubai a few years back?

Great, energy owned and funded by foreign investors. Sign me right the fark up.

Mercedes Benz, maker of the SmartForTwo, says it will stop producing gasoline cars altogether in 7 years.

get bent

there's not even an actual person from Mercedes Benz quoted as saying this.

Chummer45 2008-06-28 01:30:01 PM
Hmm. I wonder if they'll actually accomplish this, or if it's just a lofty goal of Mercedez-Benz.

I guess anything's possible now that they got rid of that giant parasite on their company known as Chrysler.

explody_pup 2008-06-28 01:30:12 PM
As soon as someone can come up with an efficient way to mass produce carbon nanotube batteries, or similar quick-charging storage, then you'll see an explosion of electric cars.

It makes perfect sense. We already have the production and distribution of energy. We just need a better storage system. All it takes is people willing to pump money into research and people who are a lot smrater than I.

I wouldn't look to LGF for auto industry announcements either. But in general, Kos is so awash with hate and craziness I'd seek a better source if they claimed water was wet. Politics is one thing, utter insanity another.

I'm Sure General Motors, Ford, Chevrolet, and Chrystler also have their backup plan.

It'll be 10 years before my current car's cost of ownership is more than one of those assuming gas is $10 for the whole period.

What will their cars run on, puppies and rainbows?

Even if they run on pure electricity or hydrogen, fossil fuels, specifically oil, will still be the main fuel powering their cars!

/you see we use lots of oil to make electricity
//which their cars will use
///also needed to create the free hydrogen atoms everyone has a boner over

You just said a mouthful son. 200A is not mutually exclusive with 120/240V. If you need a 200A charger for an EV, it'd be cheaper to drive on gas. Also, I've never seen a 200A plug. I can only imagine the size of the thing!

Wrong. We mostly use coal. The kicker is, putting scrubbers on a few coal plants is easier than putting teeny tiny scrubbers on 20 million cars. What's more, a Solar Thermal plant could easily replace the coal plant in time, whereas you're unlikely to fit a thermal concentrator on top of a car.

I don't think so. Those guys recently flooded the housing market with cash, driving house prices to the point where the proles would be paying 60% of their income forever on house payments...effectively making them slaves. Unfortunately, that blew up in their faces, and the rich white guys that own everything are a bit pinched for money to lend out to the slaves.

They'll be back in a few years though.

I wonder if anyone is taking bets on this prediction...

mobby_6kl 2008-06-28 02:11:19 PM
Unsurprisingly, the Kos article is useless. Realistically, what will happen is that all M-B cars will be E85 (or biodisel) compatible, while still accepting regular gas. Just like this environmentally friendly car:
