Nice headline, but you can still smoke grass and hash. Just no tobacco. So no story.

FTA:
But that still leaves coffee shops and their customers in a bind. Dutch and other European marijuana users traditionally smoke pot in fat, cone-shaped joints mixed with tobacco.

Yeah, it would be a shame if someone posted without reading the article.

Who in their right mind dilutes marijuana with tobacco? I always had a hard stance on that: no tobacco in my doobies. EVER.

Yes, sometimes I had to roll one only for me and smoke it on my own.

Uberdeity 2008-06-28 11:21:15 AM
Being as I would be a visitor to their fine country, I smoke mine without tobacco. So I am getting... kick... yadda.

However, the Dutch Government arresting those that grow pot is making it tougher for the Cofee Shops to get the dope. Boy, sounds to me like the headline might have had something to do with the article after all.

ultraholland 2008-06-28 11:26:40 AM
What a farking joke. Have Health Ministry officials ever been in any of the shops? It's not like a packed bar where at least fifteen cigarette are blazing at any given time. The air is not acrid. Public health and safety is not at risk. Public protection run amuck is all it is.

The Dutch government, currently led by a conservative coalition with a religious bent, is slowly squeezing back the number of coffee shops by not renewing licenses when shops close.

That sounds familiar, it's anti-freedom to vote people like that into government, anywhere in the world.

"Without coffee shops, he said, "a little bit of Amsterdam will die.""

If they get rid of the coffee shops after cracking down on the red light district, there's going to be no reason whatsoever for going to Amsterdam.

You, sir, are an amateur pot smoker.

Tobacco in a joint makes it burn better, you don't have to use a lighter constantly.
Also, a joint should have a 'tip' (piece of rolled up thick paper) and no weed in the bit just before the tip so you don't throw any away (no messing around with a roach clip).

Dampkring is a must if you visit Amsterdam. The artwork is worth checking out.

I can see this well be hard for them to enforce. At least they said they wont be checking coffee shops much. It makes them not as retarded so other countries.

I've never understood why people waste half the herby goodness by sticking it in their mouth and setting it on fire. It doesn't take much culinary flair to create some tasty snacks that will get you seriously mellow for the whole evening. You can't beat a nice THC infused guacamole.

Just another reason not to smoke joints and to go with a good solid bowl. Also, I'd much prefer to use a lighter a couple of times than to ruin my buddah with tobbacco. On the other hand, I do agree with the homemade filter policy.

I hope this blows over and is never enforced anywhere. The criminalized mushrooms last year and as far as I know they're still being sold.

Ugh this blows. I love Amsterdam so much. It makes me feel like I'm in the carnivalesque carnal-pleasure town in the 19th century, and everything is so beautiful, and everyone is so tolerant. Las Vegas is a cheap whore in comparison. Nothing beats walking back from the red light district at 5am past all the thousands of people in the still-open bars, drinking awesome dutch and belgian beer and smoking pot and all the junkies offering you coke and ecstasy... oh my god please let me get back there just a few more times before it turns into any old boring city.

With the influx of Muslims who won't adapt to Dutch culture, that's changing.

This doesn't affect cannabis smoking at all. Did you RTA, subby? This only affects tobacco. While it may be common to smoke the two together, by no means does it stop, say, vaporizing, or smoking cannabis joints, or taking monster hits of holland's greatest shiat on a giant gravity bong.

rawkus 2008-06-28 02:00:29 PM
From TFA: The Dutch "tolerance" policy recognizes that some people will smoke pot regardless of laws, so it might as well happen in an orderly way. Critics complain this encourages substance abuse.

But cannabis abuse in Holland ranks somewhere in the middle compared to other nations and is lower than in the U.S., France and England, according to statistics compiled by the United Nations' Office on Drugs and Crime.

But.. but.. The War On Drugs! Stay the Course! Mission Accomplished! Just Say No! THINK OF THE CHILDRENNNNNN!!!

Well since I live here too, I can probably fill in a bit :) Tobacco also generally makes it less harsh to smoke, although that depends on exactly what you are smoking.

The dutch have menus of the different types of weed that they sell, how is that for civilized?

Some use carbon filters, although that is more rare, all coffeeshops I have been to have the "filters" (its just rolled business card type paper, it doesnt filter anything) but you can also buy packets of them and you just tear one off and roll it up. This makes it much easier to walk around with.

There are two sizes of paper here, small/regular for tobacco only typically and the large ones for either really addicted smokers or joints.

Did you know that coffeeshops cannot legally grow or purchase the products they sell? Its overlooked how they get it so long as they comply with the other officially tolerated rules (its not legal here even though coffeeshops get licenses, are taxed, etc. There are specific amounts that are tolerated though).

That could be any number of places, there are a few like that at rembrandtplein. I would imagine though that there are others elsewhere.

Can you at least remember where roughly it was? Nieuwmarkt? Rembrandtplein? Leidseplein? How far from the redlight district or was it in the redlight district? Even a tram line would help a little, surely there was one with a number on the front and back.
