Why the hell is this greenlit for the "politics" tab??? That's some farking bullshiat, right there.

Dinki [TotalFark] 2008-06-28 11:07:11 AM
I like how Foreign Policy admits the poll results were skewed by the Turkish news-

"In early May, the Top 100 list was mentioned on the front page of Zaman, a Turkish daily newspaper closely aligned with Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen. Within hours, votes in his favor began to pour in. His supporters-typically educated, upwardly mobile Muslims-were eager to cast ballots not only for their champion but for other Muslims in the Top 100. Thanks to this groundswell, the top 10 public intellectuals in this year's reader poll are all Muslim."

Which begs the question- Why publish the results of a poll you know is inaccurate?

Dinki: Which begs the question- Why publish the results of a poll you know is inaccurate?

It's an idiot premise to begin with, since the term "intellectual" has virtually no readily definable meaning. The concept of the poll is the generate controversy, as is the concept of labeling what it's saying as something worthy of a "political" discussion. This entire topic is cannon fodder for trolls and the people who think talking to them is interesting, and it's just beyond the pale stupid, even for a Saturday morning.

You know? There's another good reason I got you favorite'd.

You are right. This greenlight is nothing more than Fark troll debates to increase post counts. What kind of insightful debate could possibly come from this? It will be the usual stuff: people saying how this is ironic, how Muslims are turrists, following a religion means that you are stupid, Christians will be brought up, somehow Atheism will be brought up, lolcats, Israel will be brought up, and something with Scarlett Johansson.

This topic is just to fill the quota for Fark's religion flamewars.

smooshie [TotalFark] 2008-06-28 11:24:13 AM
Number 1 compared atheists to terrorists. Number 3 has a whole Wiki article devoted to his stupid/bizarre claims (Pokemon are evil Jooz). Number 6 is a Muslim Billy Graham who preached that Arab-Americans only have one allegiance, to the Muslim Ummah. Number 8 is banned from entering the US because of his ties to Hamas.

With these intellectual geniuses, no wonder the Muslims are at the forefront of science and democracy.

Yep. So, we can assume anyone actually coming in here and debating this is a silly-billy.

Let's watch!

Muslims, like bible-thumping Christians and evil Israel-occupying Jews and other religionists, are stupid turrists who should become atheists. Scarlett Johansson's penis, I eated it.

ironically, i blame lolcats for the dumbing down of amerika, thus advancing the muslim agenda of world domination. additionally, atheist israelis and scarlett johansson secretly fund and operate foriegnpolicy.com, which is posting these completely contrived results to undermine muslim credibility

So many brilliant Muslims...how come their influence is almost non existent in the fields of science, politics, art, education, engineering, cuisine, healthcare, military, sports, space exploration, pop culture, finance, technology and on and on. What are these brilliant Muslim's contributions to modern society?

So many brilliant Muslims...why is their wealth almost exclusively a result of commodity (oil) possesion, and not intelligence, achievement or effort? Where are the Muslim role models? Who are the Muslims we should admire?

Well, Wikipedia is a free, open content encyclopedia, meaning not one particular viewpoint is put up above the rest. If someone posts something that's wrong to it, it usually gets resolved a few days later.

So, it is "one resource," but it's actually a collection of many resources (like an encyclopedia is).

Il Douchey was saying that Muslims have had no influence on science, art, technology, etc. Those links show that he's just wrong and has no concept of what we in the biz call "history (new window)."

heh. sorry, i thought my previous post would have made my snarky mood this morning obvious. i was just playing around. i'm very well aware of what wikipedia is and how it works, etc. and yes, anyone who disregards muslim contributions to modern society is an idiot. maybe i should go back into lurk mode - i'm never taken wrong when i do that

smooshie [TotalFark] 2008-06-28 12:20:46 PM
Muslims used to be way up there with science and math, then their leaders became corrupt and decided that fancy gold palaces were cooler than gadgets, and the Mongols and Crusaders came and pwned them.

Il Douchey [TotalFark] 2008-06-28 12:28:46 PM
Don't datadump a bunch of wiki entries about obscure and ancient Muslim accomplishments, just throw out a few names Etchy333. Tell us which Muslim did what and why we should be grateful. Megain, you can play too; but remember, we're talking about Muslim contributions to modern society - no credit for inventing chess in the fourth century.

grog was a muslim caveman who invented the wheel. but it's an old invention that everyone takes for granted now, so obviously it's not relevant in modern society

This is pretty retarded.

Other Muslim religious personalities made the top 10 - weekly preacher on al-Jazeera satellite television Youssef al-Qaradawi (3rd), popular Egyptian television preacher Amr Khaled (6th), Iranian reformist theologian Abdolkarim Soroush (7th), and Swiss-born scholar Tariq Ramadan (8th).

Other than possibly the "scholar" none of those people should even qualify as "intellectuals."

I mean, TV preachers? WTF?

I disagree with this list, but would like to point out that being a scientist does not make you smart. They are about to destroy the world in 9 days based on a theory of a man they claim to be a genius (Hawking) when he himself denounced his own longstanding theory in 2004 in favor of a different one.

Being an intellectual has never won anybody a popularity contest.

granulorhoek 2008-06-28 12:49:26 PM
I might take exception with their ranking system, but yeah. There are people in and around the Middle East that actually read and study and think and that are quite apart from the religious yahoos running around in the Sears bathroom collection. But what difference does it make? I'll bet all those people are men as well. Does that mean menfolks is smarter than wimmenfolks? Or that coffee drinkers are smarter than tea drinker? F--k it! We'll do it LIVE!

LOLZ

The muslim world is curerntly an intelectual sink hole, regardless of whether they were relevant thousands of years ago or not.
