Obama actually very rarely talks about being black. It i part of his appeal. Unlike, say, Clinton who bragged about being a woman the entire time.

Actually, no, but keep touching yourself. He ACTUALLY rarely talks about it, while McCain makes sure to run around in his NAVY hat and mention his POW time in campaign materials time and time and time again. Has Obama worn an I'M BLACK hat or put out ads or campaign flyers saying I'M BLACK on them? No? Then shut the fark up.

That's why I keep saying Obama should tap Jim Webb for VP.

I mean, which .mil experience can you trust more: the guy (McCain) who got caught on one of his first missions and spent the rest of his time there fighting mosquitoes, or the guy (Webb) who slugged it through several full tours and spent them doing actual military stuff, and who did time as top brass?

Webb is a no-brainer, but that's probably why Obama won't pick him.

I like Webb. A lot. I voted for him and I would like him; as VP

But he isn't a total no-brainer. For one thing, he has a fairly crappy record on women's issues, or at least is percieved that way... can Obama afford to piss of women with his VP choice after beating Clinton?

I have to agree with that, I like Webb too. But the cheesecake eating PUMAs will give him hell for choosing Web.

I am suspecting more and more that the VP pick for Obama is going to be somebody that is capable but boring. Obama is going to have to deal with enough manufactured controversy from the Right, to have to deal with real controversy from his number 2 man.

If he doesn't pick Clinton for VP, he'll piss-off women.

If he DOES pick Clinton, McCain will win by a landslide.

If he picks Webb, a Scots-Irish full-on white guy ex-military politician who doesn't act like one, Obama will capture a lot more fence-sitters and sensible Republicans (like me), as well as the moderate Black vote (like me).

It's a no-brainer.

I was listening to NPR on the way home the other day. The had a sound bite of some college girl who was complaining about McCain's age, saying something along the lines of: "I heard he can't lift his arms above his head because he's old."

Um, no. His age has nothing to his ability to raise his arms above his head. You can blame that one on the Viet-Cong.

I don't think anyone is going to be spoofing his POW camptime by offering coupons for massages and facials at the Hanoi Hilton. I'd be sorely disappointed if they did.

All he said is that it's a bit hard to take these dingleberries seriously when they were shiatting all over Kerry's service just a few short years ago.

The feminists are a tiny minority and no candidate needs to lose sleep worrying about what they may/may-not do since I guarantee you that even those feminists won't know what they'll do until it's done.

kasmel 2008-06-27 05:16:44 PM
This is disingenuous.

I'm by no means a supporter of McCain, but the representation of this is inaccurate.

McCain opposed the bill initially because, to paraphrase his words, it removed the incentive for military personnel to complete longer terms of duty.

The clause which adds the flexibility to transfer credits to family, contingent upon term length, is what McCain is referencing here.

Ergo, TFA=Fail.

Yah. There are plenty of reasons not to like McCain, but unless they're putting the big red nuclear button on his bed's headboard, him not being able to reach above his head really makes little difference as to whether he'd be a good President.

FTFA: My former White House colleague Yuval Levin pointed out that Mr. Obama, in his first national TV ad rolled out Friday, claims credit for having "extended health care for wounded troops," citing the 2008 defense authorization. That bill passed 91-3 - but Mr. Obama was one of only six senators who didn't show up to vote.

Donald_McRonald 2008-06-27 05:25:59 PM

Nothing new.

Yesterday, McCain had not one but two such moments. At a press conference in New Orleans, he claimed to have voted for every investigation into Hurricane Katrina, when in fact he voted twice against establishing a commission to investigate levee failures. "I don't know exactly what you are describing at this moment," he told the reporter. Then, when asked why he called for divestment from Iran but never signed onto the divestment bill Obama introduced last year, he pled ignorance: "I am not familiar with it at all. I do not know if it passed the Senate or had any hearing or anything else."

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I have no doubt someone will), but Obama didn't vote for this, either, and I do believe he was recently crowing about the legislation as well. Or perhaps that was a different bill.

That sounds bad.

But did Obama at least SUPPORT the bill?

McCain actively denounced this bill. He didn't just not vote for it. Taking credit for something that you opposed after it passes just because it is popular is pretty sad.
