This is really the Norwegian government pissing off other Norwegians. We get to build our embassy where they tell us to.

And I can't so that I don't sympathize with the people who don't want to live next to an American embassy.

Don't mess with Norwegians. They'll beat you to death with heart shaped waffles, then cut your head off with a sharp rye cracker.

Sounds more like they're pissing off the good citizens of Huseby.

But just to be sure, we should export them all to Gitmo. Lutherans are all turrists. It's in their blood.

And exactly why do we need a new embasy and why will only one location suffice?

""This wouldn't have been an issue now, without the Americans,"

Yep. A dispute about the location of the AMERICAN EMBASSY wouldn't exist without the American Government.

With insightfulness like this, it's no wonder that Norway has emerged as one of the great powers in the world today...

...oh wait.

/on the other hand it's good to see tha there are NIMBYs everywhere :)

Freakin' Nords piss me off all week. Let 'em suffer a bit.

How can I tell they're Nords? I can see part of a coat/dress coming out the bottom of the car door and they're doing 10 to 15 under the speed limit.

DeRosso 2008-06-27 07:05:55 PM
FTA: The embassy doesn't want to have to wait for a ruling on a court appeal sought by opponents of the embassy, and asked the county administrator to overrule a city decision to await results of the appeal.

That's what provoked the Oslo politicians, since they thought the Americans were trying to circumvent their process.

Umm...why is there a 'they thought' in that part?

US embasyembassy buildings are becoming unsightly bunkers. Nobody wants a truck bomb target in their neighborhood. I remember when we used to go for Friday pizza parties at the Helsinki Embassy. Now you can't get through the gate without an armed escort.

Um, I think there was a hint that the Americans might have placed certain demands on what we felt we needed and maybe, now this is just speculation, mind you, maybe, we might have complicated the issue a wee tiny bit.

BojanglesPaladin: /on the other hand it's good to see tha there are NIMBYs everywhere :)

Yes, because nothing say "good neighbor" like knowing that a LOT of people would enjoy nothing more than leaving a divot where our embassy used to be.

I mean it's not like my family wouldn't feel safe living next to the American Embassy, right?

Walking in Munich around the Englishgarten I suddenly came upon an imposing fortified structure. I was in the middle of a pretty nice residential area but this place had 10 foot high iron fencing, crash barriers, and security cameras all over. The street was blocked off to prevent cars from traveling next to it. And I thought to myself, only one country needs a building like that. Turned out to be a US consulate.

Hah! I Laugh at you!

I used to work right next to the Danish embassy and I felt VERY SAFE!

Besides, as long as no cartoons are involved, there is no reason to expect violence from Muslims in Scandinavia right?

Or is it dogs? Or is it Brittish Subways? Or is it Dutch Directors?

Oh who can keep track of all the reasons these people make 'divots'?

It's a tough one. I've stayed in a hotel right across from an American Embassy in Europe and I wasn't sure how to balance the attraction of terrorists versus the safety of the police inspecting every car that wanted to go down the street. Then I think about how ineffective those roadblocks would be, and then I think about how they would be able to kill more people by going elsewhere in the city.

I wish the article detailed what was wrong with the old military compound. Frankly, it sounds like a much easier place to secure. Residents can guarantee their home values will plummet if a US embassy moves next door.

I'm guessing there are a few Norwegians that aren't too comfortable with living next to Norway's equivalent of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.

Let them put the embassy anywhere they please. Then re-zone their embassy and move them to a more "choice"* part of D.C.

* - "choice" = high incidence of MURDER/DEATH/KILL

varmitydog 2008-06-27 10:29:55 PM
So why are the Americans attempting to speed progress on the building of the new embassy, to the point of making a political issue of it?

I would venture to guess that it has something to do with cronyism and contracts, which will change from republican cronys to democratic cronys within six months.

But why would anyone even care since you can't see it six months a year, and Semtek won't explode when it's -60 degrees anyway?

Oslo isn't Siberia - it goes down to -6,8 degrees Celcius as the average daily minimum in January and February.

Coastal climate...

We have a winner!

Yeah... whoever is getting the sweatheart deal on building the embassy is probably a heavy donor to the Republican Party, and they'll most likely be booted off the project (or the entire project cancelled) once the Republicans are booted out on their collective asses.

So, there is a sense of urgency in the US Government right now, to get all the last bits of graft and corruption safely underway, before January.

This.

The NIMBY's are trying their worst to derail the embassy project,

FTA : "Some argue that the Americans started the new fight last week, when they asked a top county official to help expedite the building process. The embassy doesn't want to have to wait for a ruling on a court appeal sought by opponents of the embassy, and asked the county administrator to overrule a city decision to await results of the appeal.

That's what provoked the Oslo politicians, since they thought the Americans were trying to circumvent their process."

"The process" apparently entails, in Oslos-ian minds, opponents of the Embassy getting their every wish, and the US placidly accepting whatever roadblocks the opponents wish to erect. The CA apparently can over-rule the current hitch - ASKING him to please do so is what you would expect any individual or group to try doing.

did you read the article? they suggested many other sites and we rejected them. and this isn't like some neighbors not wanting a walmart next to them, we are building an armed building that will attract the attention of every anti-american protester in norway.
