If you have any real talent, this is what you do. If you don't have any, then you keep doing church gigs and passing the hat collection plate.

See: Jessica Simpson, Whitney Houston, etc. etc...

Watchman: Ah. Sorry I missed your earlier sarcasm. I get it now.

I didn't realize I was being sarcastic.

All the bands you listed broke into the secular market by obfuscating the sermons contained in their songs. That way, they could come back to the churches as "heros" for having "spread the message."

\then they get the church to buy them all new gear, and away they go again.
\\yes, I've seen it first hand.

I've read that Jessica Simpson's problem in the Christian Circuit was her boobs - they were too big.

If you were one of the other much-lesser talented female members of the praise team, wouldn't find any excuse you could to get Jessica kicked out? Some old bitty wanted to regain her chance to sing solos.

Selling out is still selling out. And these Christians that turn their backs on their faith and make secular music are no worse than David Bowie when he made China Girl. Katy Perry, of course, is not the first. Evanescence was a Christian band in the beginning too. Charlotte Church made her bones in the gospel music world. Now she's got at least 3 kids and isn't married. Much to the Conservative's shagrin in this country. Not sure if she's made any music since she spiraled into debauchery, but I can guarantee you it wouldn't be spiritual.

By the way, I despise organized religion. Just making a point.

il Dottore 2008-06-27 02:57:20 PM
Been there, done that. I mean, Xian musician. Well, yes, I kissed a girl, too.

The more the home church supported the band the more control over our own music we lost. Pretty soon the church was "suggesting" what songs to remove from the set list and recommending lyric modifications to promote the church doctrine. They meddled in our personal lives and instructed us ("the Lord told me to tell you") to fire our guitar player because he was living with his girlfriend, presumably in sin. The last straw was when the church blew our record deal for us by having the church elders call up the label A & R (Sparrow) and try to tell them how to package and manage us.

In the secular music world you have management/label, press, and fans. Management/label make their decisions based on press and fan feedback.
In the Xian music world everybody thinks they are your management because Jebus talks directly to them.

I don't blame her for bailing out of Xian World one bit.

The Glass Dragon 2008-06-27 02:57:23 PM
Davescookies: Evanescence was a Christian band in the beginning too.

Not really. The label promoted them that way, but they never considered themselves one.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evanescence

Originally promoted in Christian stores, the band eventually made it clear they did not want to be considered as part of the Christian rock genre. Wind-up Records chairman Alan Meltzer issued a press release in April 2003 asking for the band's music to be removed from Christian retail outlets.

During a 2003 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ben Moody stated, "We're actually high on the Christian charts, and I'm like, What the f--k are we even doing there?"[47] This seemed to go against earlier sentiments by Moody that "We hope to express in our music that Christianity is not a rigid list of rules to follow..." and also "The message we as a band want to convey more than anything is simple-God is Love."[48] This has led to criticism of the band within the Christian community, even more so given that the band themselves approved of the plan to distribute Fallen to the Christian market. Terry Hemmings, CEO of Christian music distributor Provident, expressed puzzlement at the band's about-face, saying "They clearly understood the album would be sold in these [Christian music] channels." In the wake of the controversy, "Bring Me To Life" was dropped by many Christian radio stations; the song was Top 5 on Radio & Records' Christian Rock Top 30 one week, and completely gone the next. Ex-vocalist and keyboardist David Hodges eventually left the band over the controversy, with other members stating that he had been pulling them in more of a Christian direction than Lee and Moody were comfortable with.

When asked by Billboard in 2006 if Evanescence was a "Christian band," Amy Lee responded, "Can we please skip the Christian thing? I'm so over it. It's the lamest thing. I fought that from the beginning; I never wanted to be associated with it. It was a Ben thing. It's over."

Actually, it's a breakup song, and the chorus of "You're so gay" is followed by the phrase "and you don't even like boys."

So she's metrophobic.
