572 million?!?!?!?!?

Damn. That was a good eight minute's work. Or $4.29 billion an hour. Guess it depends on if they're hourly or salary employees.

Well, we're sure that all the glitters is gold.

ALMOST FAMOUS had something like 4 LZ songs in it, but they couldn't get the rights to Stairway.

DVD has a special feature where you play it yourself & watch the scene it was supposed to be in.

I remember an interview with the Rolling Stones when Microsoft asked them for a price to use 'Start me up' in a commerical.

The Stones picked a ridiculous number - $10 million - and Microsoft said yes without batting an eye.

I'm actually surprised it's only $12 million in publishing royalties.

I remember reading once that Led Zeppelin had sold 21 Million CD's since 1990 alone and they are one of three to sell more than 100 million records in the US. The others being The Beatles and Garth Brooks.

They forget to mention how much money they would make if they decided to tour. The numbers being kicked around for that are staggering as well. Making the rumored objections of Mr. Plant to a tour more impressive.

The guys in the band Spirit must be kicking themselves:

(The "WTF?" moment is about 45 seconds in. This was recorded in 1968.)

FTA: All told, "Stairway" has appeared on four Zeppelin albums, sales of which have earned Atlantic and the band $500 million

So, if you remove Stairway to Heaven from those four albums none of them would have sold a copy?

Wayne's World has the snippet of it, I guess that's "fair use"?
/I hate that song, almost as much as Freebird

Not anymore, at least in the versions I've seen on TV, it's replaced

Wow, they really ruined the only funny part of Wayne's World? What song did they put in its place?

It's just a stock photo. That's news-speak for "we're too lazy to find a real, relevant and authentic photograph representing the content of the article, so we'll just buy a cheap stock photo and put it up there."

And that contemptuous criticism comes from a professional photographer. I like stock photography just fine, make plenty of money on it myself, but for articles like this, would it have killed them find a photo from an actual Led Zeppelin concert? There are plenty of those in stock too....

kind of kills the whole "No Stairway" joke then

It did. They do the 'Stairway denied' joke to a song that does not sound like it.

I thought I read somewhere that if you play the first 3 notes of a song, you can avoid paying royalties, even if it is recognizable like S2H

"Stairway" has been played on the radio an estimated 2,985,000 times

I've heard most of those.

Yeah, that seems low. It feels like I've heard it that many times too.

Actually, it never WAS Stairway. They didn't want to run the risk of paying any royalties, so they chose three similar notes.
