The entire basis of the medium was based off of product placement. I wonder how something like The Price is Right will survive?

Could always be worse. Say like having someone popup, stop what you're watching and give a commercial before restarting the action, just to have it go to a commercial break a few seconds later.

They should ban all advertising except for alcohol and illegal drugs.

Aye! I'm in favor of deregulation in general!

I'm here to watch heads explode of the so-called champions of free speech who want the FCC to mind its own business vis a vis profanity, but who are so anti-corporate will support the FCC clamping down on commercial speech.

To be fair, I find advertising as offensive, if not more, than profanity. I'd much rather someone tell me to eat shiat and die than try to sell me pepsi.

I don't watch TV, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies. :-D

At the office: "Hey did you see the new Desperate Housewives?" me: "Oh yeah, read the episode summary at Wikipedia. That was a good one, eh?"

I see thousands of possibilities; there's opportunity here; another way, a passion to perform--between love and madness lies obsession. Dare to dream. Chase what matters. Get yours, for a better world for you. Think different; the audience is listening. Pure communication. Come together, on demand. Do more, live more. Just do it. Buy it. Sell it. Love it. Be fearless. Stick together, because the world is always on. Can you hear me now?

Where do you want to go today? You & us. You're richer than you think; live richly. Do more; the difference is measurable. What's in your wallet for the journey?

A thousand times this. Advertisers are farking satan incarnate; their job is basically to be so obnoxious that people can't help but look.

NeuroticRocker [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-06-26 11:59:29 PM
its always been annoying, but until recently, it never made me avoid a channel alltogether

it all started with a little popup on the lower corner

then they got bigger

and bigger

then they got animated

and bigger again

and then they added sounds

louder and bigger

and now...on tbs, they come out, break the 4th wall, and literally stop the show...mid joke...and say "watch my shiat." then continue.

but the announcement is long enough that the joke isn't funny anymore.

its like telling a joke to a friend and once you reach the punchline, they take a phone call and then say "so why did the pig have a wodden leg?"

and its not funny

Oh I saw them do that during Family Guy on TBS the other day. Some idiot comes out with a remote control and STOPS family guy to promote his new show.

That's the day I added TBS to my block list so my TiVo won't record anything from that channel again.

That would be that Bill Engvall guy (whom I don't find funny at all). Stopping the show to promote there own, he looks at the "stopped" image and comments on it - I hadn't seen such a dick move in awhile.

If I actually thought it'd make a difference, I might lodge a complaint with TBS or whomever. But it won't.

There's nothing wrong with product placement, especially when there are commercials taking up the bottom quarter of the screen anyway.

mikaloyd 2008-06-27 02:21:18 AM
Oh noes! My delicate eyes cannot handle seeing advertisements!

If I see ads I cannot control myself, I just buy buy buy!

Protect me Nanny! They are being mean and interrupting my TV shows!

MrBentor 2008-06-27 02:57:51 AM
What people are forgetting is that the purpose of commercial television, and radio; is not to air content of any kind. The purpose of commercial broadcasting is to sell advertising and therefore make money. The broadcasters do not have any interest in the content between the commercials and advertisements.

Television for the most part is a vehicle for advertising. Noting more. Anyone who thinks that it is about "shows" are deluding themselves in in to thinking that the stations and networks care.

The only thing that matters is the numbers of eyeballs and ears that see and hear the advertisements.

It is the advertisements that generate all of the revenue. The shows and content are a minor inconvenience.

sarcastrophe 2008-06-27 04:48:51 AM
Whatever it takes to get TNT to stop putting The Closer ads up on the screen every 5 seconds.

I love Law and Order, but when they started with the black band The Closer ads across the screen, it was a bit much.

If it's the best rated show on cable TV, why do they have to push it on me so much.

/I have come to hate Kyra Sedgwick

///Real southern accents are horrible too

yarnothuntin 2008-06-27 05:06:17 AM
This is really stupid. First, if you don't know by now that television has been and always will be commercials interrupted by programming, I don't know what to tell you. That's the business. Second, even if shows are being paid for by product placement, who gives a crap? It does add a bit of reality to the show. Your main character drives a car, ok fine. What kind of car? A Ford, Chevy? Maybe a Prius? Does that make you immediatly turn off the TV and run out to buy a Toyota? Probably not. Most of the complaints seem to be about "snipes" those animated lower 3rds promoting other shows, those are done by the distributor source ie local affiliates and superstations.

She sounds like a stroke victim on that show. That accent seriously isn't even believable.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2008-06-27 08:11:21 AM
I don't mind product placement. It's more distracting when someone has a can with the Coca Cola logo and it says "cola" or a brown can that says "beer". As long as they don't literally stop the show and say, "I'm going to have some refreshing Kool menthols, want some, son?" "Sure dad!" then I don't give a shiat.

As for commercials, I watch almost everything on dvr anyway and blast through them and stop if there's a commercial for The Dark Knight.

Nemo's Brother 2008-06-27 09:00:02 AM
HBO is horrible about product placement but since they don't have commercial breaks, I'll forgive them. The Sopranos always had a Coke can facing the camera as they gulp it down commenting about how refreshing it is.

Problem with product placement is the overall lack of brain filters on the average viewer. People are literally being mentally highjacked by this type of propaganda and they just don't get it.

Rather than make it illegal via FCC why not render in less intrusive by education and enlightenment for the mass consumers who sit open mouthed to take all this crap in?

Leaving it up to the public is very dangerous, look at our last presidential election to see how easily people can be manipulated. We can't legislate what get's said but we can make the consumer more aware, maybe.

Thanks for listening, now I'll have that unnamed beer I'm holding.

cryinoutloud [TotalFark] 2008-06-27 11:13:17 AM
The remote control for my TV has all the buttons busted off, but the volume control and the channel changer still work. And the mute button works. If not for that, I couldn't watch TV at all. Even so, it seems like every time I look at the TV, the same three commercials are playing.

Needlessly Complicated 2008-06-27 12:55:25 PM
Yeah... the product placement on TV is pretty annoying.

I used to watch America's Next Top Model (guilty pleasure. yes, I know it's total garbage.) and it was basically an hour-long commercial for Cover Girl or whatever other products Tyra Banks' production company got paid to shill that week. So I quit watching it. Ok, Tyra Banks hamming it up was pretty annoying, too.

The thing NeuroticRocker is talking about is pretty freaking annoying too.

All I can say is "thank God for DVDs".

Mugato [TotalFark] 2008-06-27 12:56:18 PM
This question may be rhetorical but are people so stupid that they would actually see a product on a TV show and say, "Hey, I need that!"?

Maybe so. When I was a kid I wanted James Bond's sunglasses and his watch. But what are they supposed to do, make up product names just to avoid accusations of product placement? It's a helluva lot better solution than pop up ads or hacking DVRs so you can't skip commercials.
