As an Ohio Youth who votes, I'm really getting a kick out of this tax policy discussion by a major candidate.

/Too bad he isn't the candidate I support.

Er, wait a minute..

Are you going to Ohio State pretty late in the day, or is your "lifelong Republican" status kind of silly to claim at this juncture in your life?

I'm not taking any summer classes this year so I'll return to Ohio State for the autumn quarter and yes I'm a Republican. Republicans can be elitists and wear Armani suits too.

No no, it's all cool with me no matter what party you support. I just got struck with the image of someone who JUST became a voter reporting themselves as a 'lifelong Republican.' I suppose it can be true, and I don't mean to insult. I just found it kind of funny.

Ok. I've been a register voter since before the 2006 general election and followed politics earlier than that. It's a real shame that youth hasn't been voting in large numbers in years. Don't blame me that I voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004 because I didn't plus I was too young. I think McCain will do a better job than Bush, but what McCain is doing cozying up with the Bush supporters, Republicans and then completely disown them when he wins the election setting a new course for growth in America.

Well, if he wins I hope you're right.

So you are basing your faith in the man on the fact you think he will turn away from everything he said during the election and do something completely different.

I don't even know how to respond to that.

To be fair, that notion has SOME track record of being correct amongst politicians.

yellekc 2008-06-26 09:09:06 PM
I don't know why more young people don't vote. It is really easy. I have never had a single problem. My polling place is less than 5 minutes away. I am usually in and out in less than 15 minutes. I am usually the only person under 40 in the place. I guess it could be a somewhat more difficult affair if you go to school and need to vote absentee. But even that has become a lot simpler.

I've vote in every election I am notified about. And yes, that include school, fire, and police levies. I am 23, but pay property taxes, so I'll be damned if I have to pay an extra hundred dollars a year because I didn't take the time to vote. Most levies here pass or fail over a few dozen votes. I hate it when residents here who don't even own property vote to raise my taxes. I honestly think that property tax levies should be restricted to property owners.

There is really no reason not to vote while you're young. Because we don't vote, older americans are overly represented in elections. Most of them will be dead before a lot of these policies come into full force. Elections happening today will affect young people far more than anyone else simply because we will be alive longer. Who do you think is going to pay off the 3.3 trillion dollars that we have borrowed since Bush became president? It's not going to be the seniors.

People feared about that the same way when Reagan was elected president. It's amazes me because of him, that we won the Cold War on good old capitalism through the end of Bretton Woods, the beginning the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and military spending that Soviets couldn't match it.

Hey, I am "the youth vote" and I sure as hell want to hear about taxes because everytime I see my paycheck and see how much taxes are taken out I get just a little closer to insanity.

If you're making less than $40k a year, you haven't seen anything yet. Wait until you hit the 4th quintile... then it's a whole different ballgame.

Good for you on looking out for your future, though.
