the silliest thing about John Mellancamp is that his manager thought his name was too clunky so they changed it to "Johnny Cougar." But then he wanted to get "real" later on so he took the hillarious step of combining his real name with his fake shmaltsty "rock and roll" name. John Cougar Mellancamp. as if "Cougar" was actually part of his name somehow. what a tool.

Try talking to folks about Richard Thompson. Or explain how "Dead Skunk" and "Werewolves" aren't the best works of Louden Wainwright III and Warren Zevon. And don't even get me started on John Prine.

There's just no sense in it.

Oh, really? Then why weren't you John Mellencamp from the beginning?

As for John formerly cougar mellonball, who can keep track of his name changes? Plus thanks to him I will never even LOOK at a Chevy again.

First time I wanted some of his music I went into the store and couldn't find him because I thought his name was spelled Hyatt. The radio never spelled it out for me.

Just a few clips. Have heard him live a number of times in very small venues. Loves interacting with the audience and meeting and talking with fans.

A pirate walks into a bar.
The bartender notices that stuffed in the pirate's pants is a steering wheel, so he asks the pirate, "You know there's a steering wheel in your pants, right?"

To which the pirate replies: "I know, and it's driving me nuts!"

John Prine. A true master. But, you know, the good stuff has to be searched out. I mean, it takes a commitment to listen to Zappa, and the rest takes care of itself. The search will be rewarded.

factoryconnection 2008-06-25 10:25:43 PM
I don't lament John Mellancamp's success in lieu of anyone else. Many great artists died penniless and unknown, their work not really appreciated, and certainly not lauded, until well after their deaths. I think John Hiatt is and has been for a long time, doing alright, making a solid living as an artist. Good for him... it sounds like a good thing to me.

maxx2112 2008-06-25 10:29:36 PM
Hiatt's doing a show with Lyle Lovett later this year. I am so looking forward to it.

I think Loudon's best song is the one he did for the Shrek soundtrack, "Hallelujah". (ducks)

You should hear Del McCoury's cover of Vincent Black Lighting 1952. It's wonderful. Del has covered a few Thompson tunes.

My dad is a huge Richard Thompson fan. I like his stuff as well. My dad actually went to the Fairport Convention convention one year. Robert Plant made a cameo no less.

And what are two of the songs being performed on Robert's current tour? Matty Groves and Battle of Evermore, which is not really a Fairport tune, but Sandy did sing on it.

I've never heard of John Hiatt, though now I will go to check out some of his stuff. I have, however, heard of Shana Hiatt.

Hiatt's done okay, though... lot of royalty checks over the years for his songwriting. Not sure who he tours with these days, but he had a great back-up band in the last part of the '80's: The Goners, bunch of Louisiana guys. Plus, he was in Little Village, which was a pretty cool band while it lasted (not very long, unfortunately).

Dude, I was just listening to Del and the Boys and Master of Disaster this afternoon out of the blue and doing a Google search to see if John Hiatt had a new album right before getting on Fark. Crazy.
/Love DMB - seen them 3 times.
//Wanted tickets to see John Hiatt at the Ryman but I was getting married on that day.

dmax 2008-06-25 11:34:00 PM
Seen Hiatt a half dozen times at least. Best is when he's solo and goes free-form.

Like the time he told the story about growing a nice crop of ass hair, while he's losing the stuff on top. "Maybe next time I"ll wear a thong so I can show it to you."

Or when he told the story about the guy in the front row who kept yelling "Missing You" at him. Then he realized that the guy probably got all excited and told his date that they were going to see John Waite.

And, a half hour later, when he asked for requests, we all shouted "Missing You" and he played a few bars.

And then there's the "Ice Age Tour" and the Little Village tour, and the KFOG concert where he opened for Joe Jackson.

He's a real songwriter. Recommended.

/You love your wife and kids, just like your dad did.

So what?

If all you give a shiat about is being a 'super' star then hire some backup dancers and form a shiatty boy band for the pop circuit.

There's nothing wrong with making merely a decent living playing the music you really want to play.

carmody 2008-06-25 11:43:25 PM
I always thought John Hiatt was overrated. And I also confuse him with John Prine. They're like the Bill Paxton & Pullman of singer-songwriters.

Interesting parallel... I wouldn't go quite that far, but I can see your point. I'll take Prine about any day of the week though.

I've heard John Hiatt on a few occasions and always found myself asking "Who is that?" because I was struck by the music and enjoyed it.

Have heard "Jack and Diane" WAY too many times (more than once) and will never forgive John Cougar for that piece of crap.

Whatever happened to The Zone?

DrBenway [TotalFark] 2008-06-26 01:18:18 AM
Psychlone: I feel the same way about Nick Lowe.

Just scored the 30th anniversary reissue of Jesus Of Cool, pretty damned great. Includes a lot of extra singles, B-sides, and EPs -- love his version of "Born A Woman." He's gotten kind of soft in his old age, though. Saw Rockpile 3 different times, always huge fun.

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-06-26 06:10:48 AM
Growing up in Cicago, where Hiatt seemingly played any time he had a free Saturday, I'm very familiar with him. And I dig him a lot. I also like John Mellencamp.

Saw John Hiatt with Lyle Lovett back in February...just those two and their guitars, and Garth Hudson on accordion for the encore. "Ain't No More Cane on the Brazos" - oh HELL yes, it's good.

... now Dave Matthews, on the other hand.
