(YouTube) Cool What would it sound like if members of Genesis, King Crimson, Asia, Yes and Weather Report formed a group for one night? Something like this performance of "Firth of Fifth," I presume   (youtube.com) divider line 27

dj_bigbird: Which one played in Weather Report?

Chester Thompson.

He also played with Frank Zappa

I saw Chester Thompson and Phil Collins playing drums together at a Genesis reunion in 1982. Classic stuff.

Awesome, but the song is not the same without Tony Banks' keyboard solo.

I have that concert. Good stuff. I was surprised to love Wetton's killer acoustic version of "Heat of The Moment".

Very nice. Wish there'd been some Tony Banks piano in there, though.

You will note that it is not necessary for Steve Hackett to make guitar-wanker faces while he plays his solo (in which considerable ass is kicked).

Er.

You could have seen Chester and Phil playing drums together at any Genesis or Phil Collins show over most of the past 30 years.

But yes, the stuff is classic - and you are a fortunate bastard if that's the "Six of the Best" show you're talking about.

Love this concert - have the 2 CD set, and definitely want the DVD.

Also search YouTube for the performance of In The Court Of The Crimson King. It's terrific.

/Hackett rules.
//Wetton is cool.
///MacDonald is cool.
//No comment on the other two, though I do like Weather Report.

I'm just here to say that Chester Thompson's drumming on Zappa's "More Trouble Every Day" rawks.

John Wetton has one of the best voices ever. I love that guy. He could front Nickelback and I'd still listen.

A few of my favorite musicians there.

I like how they mix up the song instead of playing an exact copy of the record.

Hackett is one of the most tasteful and inventive rok guitarists ever.

Great song, great Genesis album.

Hackett stole his sound from Robert Fripp.

That is all.

I would say that including Yes in the tagline is a little misleading since the guy played backup to Wakeman in Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe, not Yes.

Mr_Fabulous: I see your 1982 and raise you 1978.

I see your 1978 and raise you 1980, and having not bothered seeing any post-Abacab tours, I win. ;-)

I think Thompson played drums for Genesis when they toured in the early days after Gabriel left, didn't he? I'm sure I saw them some time in the late 70's. But then I think I saw a lot of things in the 70's.

Bill Bruford played on the first tour after Gabriel left and Thompson played on every tour after except the tour for Calling All Stations in 1998.

If Pete and Steve ever get around to it, I will raise you 2011 or whenever the hell Genesis tours again.

If you'd like to see Bruford playing w/ Genesis, circa 1975, buy the recent 2-disc remaster of Trick of the Tail w/ bonus video goodness.

Otherwise, you can hear them together on Seconds Out. But only on one song (Cinema Show).

Prog rock cat needs more than one puny keyboard to be truly pretentious. You need stacks of them on three sides, played simultaneously.

And a cape.

The 82 concert was in Milton Keynes Bowl in October. It was put together because PG had mortgaged his home putting on the first WOMAD concert and lost out financially. It was a PG benefit gig, and we were all happy to bail the man out. So Phil Collins reverted to being drummer, but they couldn't ignore Chester, so the two played the gig stroke for stroke in perfect unison. When Steve Hackett came on towards the end it was complete.
We stood in the rain for eight hours with the mud rising to ankle-height. We were cold, and wet, but we were in paradise.
