He's such a farking tool. he made his fans people wait hour to see him and strung them along making them think it would be any minute when they were in for another hour or two wait and now he is pissed that people had bad things to say about it. He should be mad at himself or whoever was responsible for the delay. It's not the fault of the concert goers.

My main beef with Kanye is that he portrays himself as some kind of conscious lyrical rapper when his lyrics are garbage. Sure he's better than 50 Cent, but if he came out a decade ago he wouldn't be so highly regarded. The 90s had Nas, Big L, Biggie, Pac, Pun, Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep, Rakim, Ice Cube, Redman etc, while the 00s have 50 Cent, Soulja Boy, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Akon, T-Pain, and Dipset. What the hell happened?

If the performance is great who cares about a light show? Other performers changed their set around for the fact that is an outdoor show with an uncertain start time. They use something called talent. Maybe Kanye could try that instead of a light show.

These two adjusted. Apparently quite well. Same Set, Different Sound (new window) with bonus Alison Krauss in halter top dress pic.

I listen of plenty of underground hip-hop artists, but that's not the point. In the 90s mainstream artists actually had TALENT, and you could actually hear good hip-hop on the radio. Now all the good artists have been shoved in the underground.

Lil Wayne doesn't suck, but he ain't the "best rapper alive". He's gotten even worse with his newest album, moving towards the gay ringtone rap trend with that pop song "Lollipop".

That's pretty much true of every genre. It's not exactly underground when you can walk into just about any music store, or iTunes, and buy it.

I understand the point you're making but that point has been made for the last 5-10 years now. Nobody is really suppressing good music.

TLA 2008-06-25 12:47:43 PM
Concerts have always had pyrotechnics, big screens, standard eye candy stuff, plus some extravagant things over the years like live bulls on stage (ZZ Top) or clothes dryers & rotisserie ovens (Rush)etc., but that's not what the show is about.

Take that all away and you have band on a stage.

If you can't perform that way, if your performance is nothing but a choreographed act of dancers, lights, smoke and mirrors with some singing and you can't or won't perform without all the extras...

YOU SUCK.

I think we've all had enough of Kanye West's diva-like antics. The man is popular for sampling Ray Charles, and rapping over one of his best songs. Way to rip off someone who has more talent than your whole family, Kanye.

No, no he ain't. But hip hop isn't close to over- and "Stay Fly" was the best big song of the last 5 years. If that song had been connected to the film Hustle and Flow all involved would be in a different stratosphere of fame.

As much as I like MF Doom, he has been accused (rightfully) of hiring a lookalike to go on stage and lipsync his live shows. That's worse than what Kanye did.

I feel ya. I don't know whether record companies are spending money pushing crappy "artists" or whether the people are honestly impressed with todays music but there hasn't been much good hip hop lately, and none of it has gotten any play.

T.I. is set to release this august. It could definitely be a defining album because it could be #4 in five years that completely kicked ass.

Evidence's first solo record was surprisingly good though it didn't receive any playtime.

Besides that there's mostly fluff and ring tone rap.

I'm partial to both lupe fiasco discs, as well as Deltron 3030. I really like both Game albums though he sits right on the edge of radio bs rap and west coast hip hop.
The Roots haven't let up relentlessly touring (awesome in Dallas).

Really though... Whats the last "Classic Hip Hop Album" to be released?

I can guarantee it's not "party like a rock star"

The biggest problem with it is that someone close to him talked him to doing Bonnaroo. Whoever had the great idea of him doing that needs to be sacked.

The Kanye diva thing is what it is. The guys from Oasis are talented but they are a couple of pricks. That doesn't stop me from buying or liking their music. The same goes for Kanye. His attitude off mic doesn't stop me from enjoying his music.

what? A-trak's his producer on the last album. Unless you mean stuff he's produced outside of that (maybe earlier work, I'm not really sure).. but a lot of that shiat isn't his idea. After those european music awards when he got on stage while justice were being awarded for best video and threw a hissy fit he's just paid off the french/LA scene to make him look cool.

I think the only reason this crap hip-hop is popular today is because the industry shoves it down our throats. When they got a good lyrical MC they give him little to no promotion or airplay. I have a feeling people want a new Tupac or Big, but the industry is just focusing on one-hit wonder dance songs that are easy to sell to impressionable pre-teens.

In regards to TI and the Game, I enjoy some of their songs, and I personally think the Game is probably one of the best MAINSTREAM artists today, but he still pales in comparison to the legends. Lupe is promising, he's just not all the way there yet. The Roots, well they have paid their dues.

Outkast, Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli have all released really good albums this decade, but I don't know if I'd consider any of them "classic" . They were good, but is it on par with "Illmatic", "36 Chambers", or "Ready to Die", not at all.

OTOH, underground hip-hop is probably at its best right now. I can't wait for that new Immortal Technique to drop. I also am excited for that new Crooked I and Nas shiat to come out.

someone who's made more money than you making music. dude's worked on records by jay-z, talib kweli, ludacris, alicia keys, DMX, memphis bleek, TI, mobb deep, slum village and john legend, to name a few. whether he's actually eq'ing toms and checking phase, dropping a pre-packaged redrum loop, or telling the engineer to 'turn his mic up a few octaves' and making everyone wear fireman hats, he's made a career working on other people's records, some of them even being great ones.

that said, he's a self-aggrandizing blowhard whose raps are, at best, anemic.

First sir, I see you have little idea of what a producer actually does.

It used to be that producers were in charge of budgets, booking studio time, keep the label reps out of the way of the artist, and keep the artist on schedule/budget. After that, they would run the session and offer creative input (e.g. George Martin, Phil Ramone, etc.).

Most producers these days mostly make their own album and put someone else face on it, while wearing none of the risks associated with being an artist. They know nothing of budgets, and less of the actual recording process. Technically speaking, very few producers EQ, place mics, or check phase (actually, most haven't a clue about phase), and instead leave that to the more qualified engineers they hire. While, of course, there are exceptions, I am making a general assessment based on 30 years of earning my living in studios.

Having said all that, you nailed it in the last sentence.

barneyfifesbullet 2008-06-25 02:49:59 PM
I heard from people that worked at Bonnaroo that Kanye West insisted on going on last after originally being scheduled for 8:30 because of his ego and then he was stupid enough to bring his arena production to a festival show.

So, he's a moran. But, we knew that already.
