Visually appealing. Musically disappointing.

Olympus Mons 2008-06-24 08:51:07 AM
Classical music sure has a lot more sex appeal... by violinist alone.

Never my favorite King Crimson song. I was much more into the Brufford/Wetton era

"Starless and Bible Black" would have been a good piece for this group to attempt, but I'm not sure if they could tackle the up-tempo section. They're a bit plodding.

it would be better if they were wearing schoolgirl uniforms ;-)

3 violins, 1 viola, 1 cello. Not enough nudity.

Sexy? They are so overdressed they are practically in burkhas! How about some short skirts and plunging necklines.

that was an improv. you mean one of the actual songs on the record?

NYRBill: it would be better if they were wearing schoolgirl uniforms ;-)

i was seriously expecting that and disappointed too.

as for the actual performance i gotta say-i was really wanting to like this. but like EVERY SINGLE OTHER string group version of a 'rock' song(if you can call schizoid man a rock song)that has ever been done, this totally sucked.

if anyone wants to see this concept applied in a way that isnt lamer than hell check out the ensemble modern, ESPECIALLY 'the yellow shark'.

mahavishnunj 2008-06-24 12:31:31 PM
and before it gets posted, please nobody bring up the epic failures that are Apocalyptica and whoever did the string quartet tribute to tool(i dont know if that was Apocalyptica or not).

Eh, I liked it. I thought the main riff sounded great with strings. It definitely doesn't hurt things that they were attractive.

Have you tried Rachel Barton-Pine's violin cover of "Sunday Bloody Sunday"?

Let's call it "Starless" -- the last track on "Red". Wetton tells the story of the song title here (about 5:15 in).

Is the headline reference on purpose? Suggesting that this is the pre-electric?

I'll give subby benefit of the doubt - all around disappointing cover though.

Would I be wrong if I said I'm the only one here who owns a David Cross album?

And also fondly remembers the quote from a KC reviewer who said: "If the violinist from String Driven Thing and King Crimson had a contest to see who was the worst violinist, the violinist from String Driven Thing would lose".

Yes, you would be wrong. On both counts. :)

Do you have his free jazz album with Keith Tippett? (Low Flying Aircraft.)

That review of LTIA was from Sounds, I believe, and the excerpted paragraph began: "David Cross suffers from a severe handicap: he can't play the violin, which is why he's given only the most rudimentary instrumental lines."

/a couple of Crimson trivia maniacs, I see

Okay - don't mind being wrong on this one - even twice over...

I'll have to look for the one with Tippett.

Website of the featured string quintet, by the way.

I'd love to see them (or anyone) do the Starless and Bible Black improv. Speaking of Crimson trivia, SABB was played immediately before Trio when they were recorded (Nightwatch CD). Greatest example of Crimson's dark/light dichotomy.

Olympus Mons 2008-06-27 11:21:09 AM
I love starless and bible black in general.....fracture... the longer improvs on that CD. Red is cool also. When I dabbled in a band we tried The Great Deciever...that weird Brufford rythm pattern with the simple bass line (that was me) was something that spun the drummer and my head around for a while. Lament was easier to get and I love that angular dramatic ending.

Kronos string quartet would be a good choice for King Crimson stuff. Love Asian women though..I did marry a girl from Korea after all.
