Can't attend this due to a family reunion up in the north. Thanks for the great scheduling mom! Although I would only see Sigur Rós because Björk sucks donkey balls.

Btw markie_farkie is the second to last pic taken on the road to
Jökulsárlón?

Post-rock would be the best classification. Here's a Sigur Rós video for you: Link (new window)

I'm actually planning a trip there, and scheming on how to land a job in Reykjavik. Can I pick your brain?

Certainly a lot more pleasing to the ear than Bjork. Her singing is really choppy and the heavy accent just exacerbates it.

/does Jonsi always sing in a falsetto?

Things I love about Iceland.

1. Very few people live there.

2. Hot springs.

3. Fish, fish, and more fish to eat.

4. It's peaceful.

5. Lots of open space, no urban sprawl.

6. It's not ugly.

I saw Sigur Ros after Pearl Jam at Bonnaroo this year. Laying on a blanket and watching the stars as they played was probably the second best thing that happened this year. The first being Brian Posehn.

Yeah, that was near Skogar in late September 06 while I was playing tour guide to some friends who came to stay for a week. A guy I worked with, who now works for Glitnir, loaned me his parents' summer house in Mulakot, and we were very lucky to have nice sunny warm weather!!

Glitchwerks 2008-06-24 09:26:29 AM
Bjork at least has the common sense (or her label does) to set herself up with some of the hottest underground dance music producers and studio wizards. It's carried her further in the long run to market herself properly rather than to get Scott Storch to produce a club track and burn out her welcome.

I always wonder how much involvement, other than vocals and songwriting, she actually contributes to her albums.

She can do really good tunes when she wants to, but her abrasive stuff irritates me to no end.

I'm still trying to form an opinion on Sigur Ros. I hear tunes by them I love instantly, and then they have a lot of stuff that does nothing for me. Other than the first album, which would be the ones to track down? I'm downloading their newest one now...

At the very least, both acts are original.

Takk is probably the easiest one to fully digest. I got that as a Christmas gift a few years ago. I listened to it on the way to work and spent the first half hour of work that day ordering everything else I could find.

I would probably put Ágætis Byrjun next, then (), followed by Hvarf/Heim, and finally Von. That's just my personal preference. I have streamed the new one but have not really formed an opinion on it. I am going to pick it up at lunch today.

It would be awesome to be able to go.

lerxst2112 [TotalFark] 2008-06-24 12:17:03 PM
If I had the means to go, I would in a heartbeat. Saw Sigur Ros at Bonnaroo and they blew my mind to the stratosphere. Haven't got into Bjork yet, but I would love to see both in Iceland.

markie_farkie

Those pictures are beautiful. What made you leave Iceland?

lerxst2112: Those pictures are beautiful. What made you leave Iceland?

I was there on a 1-year contract gig with the option to renew indefinitely to do network security stuff for the US Navy at the NATO base there.

They closed the base in Sept 2006, so I was unfortunately not able to stay.

I will go back.

I've been trying to make my way to Iceland for years now, but stuff keeps getting in the way.
/just bought my ticket for the open air concert on the quay in old port in Montreal. I can't wait.

TribeFan695: does Jonsi always sing in a falsetto?

Not always, but most of the time, especially when he is singing in his nonsense Vonlenska language. On songs like Hoppípolla, Starálfur, and Heysátan, the parts he sings in Icelandic are generally not falsetto (and the live versions of those songs from their Heima DVD are just fantastic).

/downloaded their new album today
//it's very good

How on earth did you manage to only hear Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do??????
Get Agaetis Byrjun, ( ), Takk and the new með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust. Then try Von and Hvarf/Heim. Then buy the Heima dvd.
Good stuff.

Also go see them live.

Pandora online. There's no way they'd get any of their singles on the radio in the Des Moines area.

Meh. I've got college tuition to worry about. I'm sure I can find their music on YouTube.

Not exactly sure why, but Bjork's music is completely different than anything else that I like, yet it's actually really enjoyable. Go figure. Oh, and cue the Bjork pics...

/Please?
