This was one mug shot that had me slack-jawed because playing that music while high on meth seems impossible, and unenjoyable at best.
Plus, to have a meth habit with Phish money to back it up? Shudder.

Thought he was busted for OxyC's & valium.

** Wiki-fu **

The drugs included heroin and the prescription drugs hydrocodone, alprazolam, and oxycodone, prescribed to someone else.

Pretty much the antithesis to meth

I'm shocked, shocked to learn that rock musicians have ever been involved with any sort of drugs.

These guys played my campus about 16 or 17 years ago and no one bothered to arrange for security. As the on-duty "Manager" for our Student Union, I had the privilege of walking around all evening confiscating pot and beer from damn near everyone in the room.

I've never understood this phenomenon. I'm not what you'd call a "fan" of their music, but neither do I actively dislike it. What is it about it that attracts the "hippie element" in DROVES? Or is it not the music, but the band itself?

I just don't get it. Can anyone explain it?

Farkeologist: I just don't get it. Can anyone explain it?

Jerry Garcia liked their music, then he died and all the hippies had to follow someone around. I guess they could have followed Jimmy Buffett but then they would have to start drinking.

It's the scene, not the music. I know people that hate their music that hung out in that circle just because of the dope. They can't name one Phish song but they sure can tell you all of the stuff they scored.

I was having a real shiatty day until I heard this.

Highway Bill's on the rotary still and he can't even feel the pain
Of a sun dried shoulder and a scar from a boulder that cut him right across his vein
Now he's sucking cigar and he's shoveling tar in the crater of a turnpike terrain
He's got only one hope, and he wants to elope, because Highway Jill is driving him insane

/Was at the Show when they busted this out in '03.

Not true, every single phish head I have ever met loves the Dead.

I've had good times at Phish shows.

Hint: Don't EVER go to indoor Phish shows. The B.O./patchouli/marijuana smoke combination is enough to make you pass out.

sje1978:

That's because The Dead are better than Phish.
Phish is all they have though. Many of them are just too young to have been able to make it to Dead shows.

When Jerry died there was a whole slew of Phish heads online complaining that they didn't want Deadheads in "thier scene"
There has been some rivalry ever since.

My friend Mike put out this sticker:

Jerry is dead
Phish sucks
Get a job

sje1978: Not true, every single phish head I have ever met loves the Dead.

I don't think it goes the other way, though.

Saw the Grateful Dead dozens of times. Always had a good time. Drugs and "scene" were fun, but it was always about the music which flowed and ebbed.*

Went to a Phish show that all the phishheads touted as the most unbelievable night of rarities and specialness that they'd ever seen (1996 or so at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver) but the music really failed to move me at all.

(*That's probably why the 1993-1995 years were so weak. The "scene" got bigger while the music got way worse -- Jerry forgot lyrics, keyboard players kept dying, shows ended with Throwing Stones -> Not Fade Away with the "I Fought the Law" encore. Boring. The band was on autopilot. I'd leave early to go prep burritos.)

Sorry to hear about your son. Pot is a great drug with no real side effects, but heroin is a different beast entirely.

And Rift is my favorite album, too. The solo section of "Maze" is 23 kinds of awesome.

Your friend Mike is an enormous loser. I can see why you get along, though, since you are as well.

GurneyHalleck [TotalFark] 2008-06-23 05:40:35 PM
I saw a lot of great Phish shows from '92 right through to Coventry. Even at the end, especially the Mansfield, MA shows just before Coventry, they still had it in them to take the audience on an adrenaline-riddled musical journey.

But I'd like to see them work on it a little harder this time around. Rehearse a little more.

IMO, Trey is still one of the greatest living rock guitarists, and if can get his head straight, I don't doubt that he can lead Phish back to some glory. I'd really like to see it happen.

BKITU [TotalFark] 2008-06-23 05:45:17 PM
I don't care about the band, but as long as this means Ben & Jerry's "Phish Food" stays on the market, I'm totally cool with it.

That's some good farkin' ice cream.

Highroller48 [TotalFark] 2008-06-23 05:53:36 PM
They may reunite, but they ain't playing until they see a prescription.

MikeXpop 2008-06-23 06:46:17 PM
Reunite? They broke up four farking years ago. FOUR YEARS! Hell, it's only been two years since Trey and Mike toured together with the B/R Duo. Sheesh.

Does anyone know if Page's solo album is any good? Mike's work with Leo Kottke and just about everything Trey's done by himself have left me very cautious.

The Dead wrote all time classic Americana songs, and Robert Hunter wrote poetry that will stand the test of time like Brokedown Palace and Jack Straw.

Phish wrote The Wolfman's Brother.

And yet he still sells more records than you and Mike. What will you do when you're dead? Rot in the earth or rot in the earth while continuing to be loved worldwide? I'd take the latter given the chance.

Phish sucks

Subjective opinion, IE, worth nothing. People seem to dig them, they're a proper live band, that's fine.

Get a job

Most of us have jobs, some of us have pretty good ones. Weird, I know, but that's how we afford records, tickets and weed, you know, after we've fed the wife and kids and paid the mortgage. Tell Mike, relax knobend, have a joint and de-stress. And that he wasted his money and time.

J13P 2008-06-23 07:54:06 PM

You really shouldn't need to resort to insults, but when you grow up you will probably still do that anyway. Get a grip.

Phish sucks. I'm not the first to say it, and I surely won't be the last.

DWitchiewoman 2008-06-23 08:06:22 PM
Zem:

I am well aware that Jerry still sells plenty o' music.
I followed the band for a long time, and ended up working for GDP.

Sounds like you need to lighten up. It's just a sticker from 13yrs ago, when a lot of us were laughing at the idea of doing Phish tour when Jerry died.

My initial point was that not all Deadheads are Phish heads.
Hence, the example of the sticker.

Personally, I would love to go to a Phish concert (broke up before I got into them) and make sure to make it into a good road trip.

And to all people who say Phish sucks:

Good for you. You have an opinion on music that is different from others but frankly, we don't care you think Phish sucks. You enjoy your music and we'll enjoy ours.

"When Phish broke up, I made some comment about how I'm not gonna go around playing You Enjoy Myself for the rest of my life. And it's so funny because [Jon] Fish[man] and Mike [Gordon] and Page [McConnell] have been talking to each other a lot lately and now - it's not that I can't believe that I said that, but it's symbolic of how much I lost my mind or how much I lost my bearings or something. Because at this point in time I would give my left nut to play that song five times in a row every day until I die."

Please, keep it, and do your right nut a favor.

I'm confused as to when Phish has ever done a 38 min. bass solo. As someone who never had the opportunity to see Phish live, I'd love to see them reunite. Trey needs to do something different, his solo stuff has been full of fail.

It certainly doesn't - and one of the biggest Phishheads I know only thinks the Dead are 'okay'.

Phish had its moments, but I never went out of my way to see them - didn't even see the last simulcast show...had enough in the movie theater the day before.

Phish is the world's greatest bar band. That's it, nothing more, nothing less.
