I guess I'm the only one that still listens to BNL. Damn.

First of all, it's Barenaked Ladies, arrogant hipster subby.

Also, BNL kick some serious ass, especially back in the day. Look past the two silly songs you've heard and check out some of their real work. It'd surprise you.

/nah, much more fun to be snarky and mean-spirited to a bunch of artists who never made asses out of themselves or did anything other than mind their own business
//stay classy

theesir 2008-06-23 03:04:15 PM
Answer to subby question....

Yeah, I think they do.

/I'd go!

GavinTheAlmighty 2008-06-23 03:05:27 PM
Yes, they are still insanely popular. Either you love Coldplay or you love some bullshiat hipster music that nobody has ever heard of and you're trying to be funny, but you're really just coming off as a pretentious cock.

DslainteC [TotalFark] 2008-06-23 03:05:41 PM
I'd go...if I had a million dollars.

gkyaun 2008-06-23 03:05:46 PM
I worked on one of those cruises, etc.

A hella fun ride I must say.

Ditto

/saw them at the Boulder Theater on the 13th, promoting "Snacktime".

My travel agent totally misrepresented the purpose of this cruise.

I've got two of their CD's, so I guess I'm a semi-fan.

mdbuff12 2008-06-23 03:17:47 PM
If all else fails subby, you can blame it on me.

/Saw them several times
// Gordon is a great album, 18 years later still holds up well

I hope she's on time.

I was about to click on the article, and "Old Apartment" came on my iPod. No bull, it's still playing as I type this. Are the BNL magical?

/scared

nuttmegx 2008-06-23 03:20:53 PM
Way to look like a tool, sub. Band has a rabid fanbase that sells out halls every tour.

Go play your Good Charlotte MP3's.

mdbuff12 2008-06-23 03:21:29 PM
Gordon came out in 1992, my mistake

letstakeawalk 2008-06-23 03:26:46 PM
If someone asked me if I wanted to take a cruise with "bare naked ladies", I'd sign up very quickly.

/and then be very disappointed when the band came out...

BlueLightJim 2008-06-23 03:27:45 PM
I'm waiting for tickets to go on sale for the seneca niagra casino show. I've never seen them live and it's been a goal of mine for several years now.

Saw Tom Petty/Steve Winwood on Saturday. That was pretty good.

ToxicAvenger 2008-06-23 03:29:49 PM
I've seen BNL many, many times over the years and they never fail to disappoint. Either in a club or an amphitheater, you get your money's worth. The Esther Williams shopping cart sequence from the BNL/Alanis Au Naturale tour is an all time concert classic. That tour also featured this highlight (new window).

RsquaredW 2008-06-23 03:33:06 PM
BNL does a great live show - lots of audience participation and goofy jokes between songs, the occasional cover medley, etc.

I think their earlier stuff is great, not so much what they've done since "Stunt", though...

// saw them with Tal Bachman a few years back
// you know, the "She's so hiiiiiiigh high above me" OHW
// digitally-enhanced falsetto

srhp29 2008-06-23 03:33:18 PM
So there is BNL hate on Fark too. I guess they had commercial success so that is a given huh?

I saw them live one time and they put on a pretty damn good show, so whatever.

Saw STP last weekend too, and aside from Scott looking like death had already visited him and waiting an hour and a half between the opening band and STP, it was a very good show as well.

Perhaps I just like all shows as they entertain me which is why I go to them.

errrrr .. you may want to reread that sentence and try again.

lol

Considering they've been around for almost 20 years and have been popular for at least 15 I'm not surprised.

peachpicker [TotalFark] 2008-06-23 03:36:39 PM
Nerdy Canadian bands are trying to clothe america's babies!

Context HERE

"My Manny is still making me listen to different and interesting music, but these days he's starting to seem a little more paranoid about it. Just the other day he got very excited about a small tag on one of my jumpers, which he said resembles a logo used on the cover of the album Gordon, by a group of nerdy Canadian musicians called the Barenaked Ladies. Looking at them both together I think he does have a point, and the company website does seem a mite suspicious. Perhaps, like the ubiquitous post horn of Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49, the symbol is pervasive but overlooked, visible only to those who have learned to see it. Are nerdy Canadian musicians really scheming to put clothes on America's babies? Is the Yukon planning to infiltrate UConn? I won't hold my breath waiting for the mainstream media to cover the story. Everyone knows all the network news outlets are already deep in the pocket of Big Canadian Bacon."

I'd go... but not on a real cruise ship, that's cruel.

Huge BNL fan myself... True musicians who do amazing live shows. I have not made one of the cruises, but I hear they are a blast. From the past cruise(s) I know they sell out fast... To answer your question, Subby - YES, BNL does have enough fans to fill cruises...

MugzyBrown [TotalFark] 2008-06-23 03:40:43 PM
I like Old Apartment and Brian Wilson.

They're a decent band.

They're meant to be seen live.

Saw them at Hillside in Guelph a few years back. My all-time favourite concert. Period. Full-stop.

Are the people on the cruise going to get postcards with sailor chimps on them to send home?

They're probably the best live band I've ever seen; they're fantastic musicians and singers, plus they really know how to put on a show. I saw them in Vancouver (Coquitlam) in April in a 1,000 seat theater, but we were about 3 feet from the stage. Frickin' awesome.

Yes, that's someone in the audience playing Ed's guitar for the ending of "Alcohol."

RsquaredW: I think their earlier stuff is great, not so much what they've done since "Stunt", though...

I like all their stuff, but I'm partial to "Barenaked Ladies are Me/ Men," at least right now. "Bank Job" never fails to make me laugh, and "I Can, I Will, I Do" is one of the greatest love songs ever, IMO. I also have a weird soft spot for "Peterborough and the Kawarthas" even though I can't relate to the lyrical content at all.

"Everything to Everyone" was sort of meh, and that damn monkey song just pisses me off.

I have never seen BNL live, but I would give my left nipple to do so. Not the right one, though, I'm rather fond of it.

I've always liked BNL... well, except for Everything to Everyone, which only had a few songs on it I liked.

I really like Everything to Everyone. I'm not so fond of the newer album. There are maybe 3 songs that I'm into.

I love their greatest hits CD (obviously)
