A small bottle of Coca-Cola was selling Sunday for 18 billion Zimbabwean dollars ($2.45).

Good to see the US Dollar is holding it's own against one other currency in the world.

EZ1923 2008-06-22 11:12:23 PM
This is totally unsurprising. It's really amazing how one man can turn a reasonable stable country into a stinking pile of shiat in such a short time.

/Not what I meant, but I'm sure someone will get there...

"We are not going to give up your country for a mere 'X' on a ballot. How can a ballpoint pen fight with a gun?" - Robert Mugabe

/From this week's Time

LocalCynic 2008-06-22 11:20:17 PM
George Bush only wishes he had the determination of Robert Mugabe. Mugabe knows that Tsvangirai and the MDC are crybabies just like the DNC. John McCain could show his maverick side by backing pointing out that like Democrat Party, the MDC is making up phony stories of voter suppression.

Holy shiat, i didn't realize things were so bad over there.

puffy999 [TotalFark] 2008-06-22 11:24:09 PM
I'd love to see someone try something like this in the US.

Anywhere save Detroit, and that guy would be executed.

Oakenshield 2008-06-22 11:24:52 PM
Buh? Since when does this merit the News tag? Obama might have had a cigarette, McCain coughed twice at a press conference, global climate change is affecting the production of bottled water, and Americans are now paying almost half of what Europeans are paying for gas! Outrageous this might receive any covera....wait...does Zimbabwe have oil or something?

Zimbabwe's utterly messed up. Mugabe's reign is pretty much a textbook example of what NOT to do when running a country. It's a freaking miracle that the evil fark hasn't been beheaded by a rioting mob yet.

puffy999 [TotalFark] 2008-06-22 11:28:16 PM
Annual inflation is about 1.7 billion per cent and the country's currency has become effectively worthless.

A small bottle of Coca-Cola was selling Sunday for 18 billion Zimbabwean dollars ($2.45).

Jesus Tits!

Reggaenomics 2008-06-22 11:29:50 PM
This as absolutely shameful.

Tsvangirai wins the goddamn election, Mugabe forces a runoff, then starts strong-arming, bribery, and killing in order to get Tsvangirai to drop out.

Mugabe is a much worse man than Saddam, Ahmadinejad, and Kim Jong. The world will throw a party when this sackbag is gone.

You wouldn't have heard much out of CNN or MSNBC, and nothing at all from FOX.

All I know about it came from NPR.

Fun fact about the national media and the world stage:

Horrible shiat is happening all over the world. Really really horrible shiat. The most horrible shiat you're not going to hear from the news networks because they're mostly focusing on the significantly less horrible shiat happening in countries we're planning to invade. Sudan? Nothing. Zimbabwe? Nothing. But every little rumor about Iran is going to be shouted because THEY'RE evil enough to warrant invasion, sure.

NPR and BBC are the best sources if you really want to know what's happening beyond our borders.

I've found that he's become increasingly pathetic as fewer and fewer people actually respond to him. Honestly, I don't think there's any "discussion" I could have with him that I didn't already have with him back when he was Afternoon_Delight or Mighty_Dog.

Some on the left are seriously pro-Mugabe. Although it doesn't seem like much is being done by Democrats to help freedom out in Zimbabwe, which is a shame. A certain Senator could speak out, for one.

You make a good point. News channels/stations/websites ought to run a broader range of stories. Less opinion pieces and more facts of whats going on in the world would be awesome.

NPR is good, but is also somewhat afflicted by the "outrage of the month" syndrome. BBC gets more stories as well, but is often one-sided in its presentations of them.

Sometimes I think there should be a world Asshole Elimination Squad designed specifically for situations like this one with Mugabe. Basically, the rest of the world could vote to have guys like Mugabe taken out for the good of humanity. Sometimes one asshole really can destroy millions of people's lives, and I think the world would be better off if there was a mechanism in place where the penalty for being that kind of asshole "leader" was swift death. Then there could be a built-in force to drop a bomb on their residence or whatever.

Well, since the oldest were 10 when he took power, it was the final solution for the teens dealing with their parents.

This is the real tragedy of Iraq. The cyclone in Burma warranted intervention as does this. I'm not entirely against the whole "world cop" thing, but you generally have to remain the good guy and appear invincible to make that happen.

/Not to mention not being able to kill those farkers in Afghanistan

Hey CIA... you want a good investment? Buy Mugabe's army away from him. It's going rate is damn cheap at this point, and you could actually knock out a douchebag instead of supporting one this time

Thanatos_10 2008-06-23 12:57:31 AM
There doesn't seem to be a good solution to these situations. I don't condone assassinations, but there are certain people who warrant it.

Bloody William: Zimbabwe's utterly messed up. Mugabe's reign is pretty much a textbook example of what NOT to do when running a country. It's a freaking miracle that the evil fark hasn't been beheaded by a rioting mob yet.

He's done almost everything wrong. He was smart enough to give the people with guns a cut of the action. If you have power and agree to align with him, you'll live in relative luxury. If you don't, he has a large enough percentage of those with guns to put you down by force. The only time this doesn't work is when they run out of stuff to give to those with guns, but by that point the civilians are mostly starved to death, any infrastructure has been destroyed, etc.

It's a truly deplorable situation, but the sad fact is all countries are selfish. We won't spend a significant amount of money to fix the problem, won't send in troops, and won't sacrifice the political capital to make it happen. The EU and China aren't too inclined to either, and it will take more than empty or weak gestures to thin the climate of dictators in Africa.

Oh, trotting out the old Fox News "some people" meme? Pretty weak. If you are really a democrat, why are you trolling like such an old pro?

The Beacon Man: LOL.
Liberals run from the fact that they adored Mugabe a few years ago. Suddenly, they 'don't remember'.
On Fark.com, they run from the truth with their ignore lists.
Neither changes reality.

Just like republicans run from the fact that we used to cozy up to Saddam and Osama? Do you not remember the 1980s?
It ain't exclusive to liberals. Duh.

Mugabe was a promising idealist who transformed into a megalomaniac like so many other African heads of state. Unlike Iraq, the Zimbabweans wanted democracy and they fought for it themselves and won it. Mugabe is squarely to blame for the trainwreck.

Mbeki is an idiot, and an in-law of Mugabe, now his chickens are coming home to roost with all the xenophobic riots. Mbeki's successor, Jacobus Zuma, is such a doofus that he's likely to splinter the ANC, which could be a good thing for democracy in SA.
