Because if they have too many sexual health clinics, how are they going to catch up to America in the important demographics of unwed teenage mothers, STD's, AIDS, child abuse and other consequences of early sex?

In the under 14s, abortions rose by 21% from 135 in 2006 to 163 last year. The number of abortions in all women rose by 2.5% to reach an all time high of almost 200,000.

Lucky aborted kids, at least they won't hate their parents for surrendering.

It doesn't sound like any of the concerned parents were saying that the kids shouldn't be getting contraceptives, just that they themselves would like to know about it so they could maybe talk to their kids and put an end to the risky behaviors?

It's a double-edged sword really. Either you're effectively denying the kids what they need because they won't seek it if their confidentiality is not protected OR you're leaving parents out of what is, in some cases, medical treatment of their children (plan B, chlamydia testing, contraceptive pills) when the parents really might be able to stop their kids from getting in this trouble to begin with.

I can't say I wouldn't be upset if my kids were getting all these things without me knowing about it even though I understand the importance of confidentiality.

There's just no way to please everyone involved.

Let them learn the new American abstinence-only sex-ed method: Sex is bad if it can get you pregnant. Therefore, sex that cannot get you pregnant is OK.

Therefore...of the three kinds of sex a male can have with a female, two are still OK. One is kind of icky, especially if you're only 13, but, if you just gotta have sex, then...

"How did you manage to get gonorrhea?!???!!!??"
"But Mom, you said as long as I didn't get pregnant..."

The true STDs you kinda have to fear are the ones that have no cure: HIV and Herpes.

I'd say this is the end of ignorance. Is a parent being unaware of a child's sexuality really worse than a child denying him/herself help out of shame, or a child being denied help by an ignorant parent?

Loren 2008-06-23 12:57:25 AM
Batewoman: It doesn't sound like any of the concerned parents were saying that the kids shouldn't be getting contraceptives, just that they themselves would like to know about it so they could maybe talk to their kids and put an end to the risky behaviors?

Except in most cases you won't succeed.

The thing is the choice isn't between the kids getting the stuff and telling the parents or the kids getting it and not telling the parents, but rather between getting/not telling and not going in the first place.

Gyrfalcon: Let them learn the new American abstinence-only sex-ed method: Sex is bad if it can get you pregnant. Therefore, sex that cannot get you pregnant is OK.

Actually, you can get pregnant from anal. A properly-used condom in the vagina is actually safer than no condom in the back door. The thing is, the semen can leak out and if she's lying face down where is it going to leak onto...

Onager: I'd say this is the end of ignorance. Is a parent being unaware of a child's sexuality really worse than a child denying him/herself help out of shame, or a child being denied help by an ignorant parent?

because we always should tell abusive parents that their little snowflake is sexually active. That way, they can properly beat the shiat out of the little slut when she gets home from school.

There is usually a reason why the kid doesn't want mummy and daddy to find out. Maybe that reason isn't based in reality, but perception is huge. If the child perceives that her parents will get violent/reject her etc, if they find out she has had sex, then the last people she will want to know about her activities is her parents.

If these parents want to be told, maybe they should spend more time talking to their kids, instead of demanding that they always get the news second hand from school.

farkeruk 2008-06-23 06:44:45 AM
There are only 1 reason for disagreeing with these clinics: because you want your kid to walk down the aisle as a virgin. There is no other justification I can think of. And for that, people will throw the dice of them not respecting your sky fairy views and risk pregnancy or disease.

If your kid wants to talk to you about sex, they will, in which case these clinics are there, but unused. If not, there's a very good chance that they won't respect your wishes and will go ahead anyway, in which case you'd want this fallback.

Unless you want your kids locked up in a convent or under a burqua, you just have to accept this.

I'd like to think my kids could talk to me at this time, and have an open and honest conversation, but I'd also rather that if they couldn't, that they'd protect themselves.

No Such Agency 2008-06-23 07:17:47 AM
farkeruk:

As was said above, sometimes the parents ARE the problem, and kids need another source of advice and information. It's in everyone's best interest for them to have it available, too. Otherwise they won't go to their parents, they'll try to sort it out on their own. and we all know how well THAT usually works.
