From 676 to 737 A.D., under the Japanese emperor Tenmu, the eating of all meat, including fish, was outlawed in Japan. From 737 A.D. until the late 19th century the eating of all meat other than seafood was not permitted. But even then, fish was generally only eaten by most people on special occasions. Dogen, the founder of the Soto Zen school of Buddhism, the main sect of Zen Buddhism, in the 12th century, instituted the requirements of a vegan diet for all his students, and that practice is still followed by observant Zen practitioners.

Let me tell you what you can do with carp. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, carp-kabobs, carp creole, carp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple carp, lemon carp, coconut carp, pepper carp, carp soup, carp stew, carp salad, carp and potatoes, carp burger, carp sandwich. That- that's about it.

I'm getting a little tired of pork here in Bavaria, but hey, with the local beerage and the ability to cook beef properly at home, I'll make do.

Back on topic, Bavarians like to eat whole carp that looks like they were battered and fried while still alive - the tails are often curled in a rather tense-looking position. I'm pretty sure they are gutted before deep-frying, but I try not to look too closely.

I, on the other hand, generally cannot stand fish (I tolerate salmon if it's cooked just right) and can never stand shellfish.

My dad lives in Lodz, Poland. (Pronounced 'Wootdge', go figure) So I'm there for Xmas. Turns out the traditional Xmas dinner is carp served 7 ways. They have roast carp, carp soup, carp, cold carp salad, carp jello (honest), and more carp.

They sell a lot of carp at the Xmas carp stands but then there are guys standing by the side of the road with nets. Upon closer examination, they've strung nets across the water-filled ditch in two places creating a pond. Then stocked it with live carp. Which they will sell to you. Stop your car, point out your carp, guy nets it and hands it over. Then you take it home and put it in your bathtub until you're ready to make the cart jello for the big family Xmas carp dinner.

ElMuerte: Never stops to consider that plants are living beings as well.

Actually it would be a vegan outside of mainstream veganism who admitted to any thing other than the fact that humans leave a carbon footprint and are responsible for detestation by just being alive and reduction of this is a priority. Yes, plants are alive, so are bacteria, neither have a CNS to interpret pain, plants react to stress in the same way a human corpse does, chemical signals but no CNS.

The fact that animal suffering is authentic is clear even in a pro-execution society. Animal abuse, at least abuse of animals who are commonly pets, is illegal and harshly frowned upon. People don't seem to mind when it happens to livestock, but they are clearly coming around and widespread acceptance isn't to be expected instantly. Human slavery was accepted and took thousands upon thousands of years to get to a point of near universal abolition, yet torture and murder continue on. The animal rights, including humans, struggles are not to be measured in weeks, months or years nor decades. They are to be measured in centuries.

The fact that life for the sake of life is not the ultimate axiom is why so many vegans have what appears to be a contradiction when it comes to abortion. A similar contradiction to that which most pro-lifers have when it comes to the death penalty.

The point of keeping carp, gar, or catfish alive in the bathtub for a day or so is to get the mud taste out of them - we do it where i come from in East Texas (although we used a cattle watering tub, and not the family bathtub. Doesn't seem to work for carp, though. They always taste muddy to me, and I've never had it prepared in any way that got rid of it.

Suicidal Writer: as carp are often caught by trolling (being bottom feeders), I think it's amusing that you are trolling a carp thread. And you seem to have caught a few - wish I could tell you how to get that mud taste out of 'em. :)

Many plants react when their lives are in danger. The chemical changes are their reactions and attempts to keep living after damage. Just because you can't relate to the lives of plants, bacteria or fungi like you can a puppy or a cow doesn't mean their lives are worth less. You can see yourself in animals easier then you can plants. Their method of living is too different then your own to give them a second thought.

You're a vegan because you feel guilty for killing something to keep yourself alive. Killing plants is easier for you because they don't scream. Your morals are biased to only what you understand to be "valid" signs of life.

Not everyone is a moral relativist, not even the class of all meat-eaters which you purport to represent. Instead of insulting him, why don't you address his moral claim, if you disagree? Don't knock it until you've tried it.

I've had some great baked carp -- the taste and texture was similar to Patagonian toothfish (aka. Chilean sea bass). Fried and breaded is good too. You can substitute carp in any practically any recipe that calls for catfish.

It's an easy claim to make when you invoke "morality" in a venue in which it is irrelevant. You could call me a "moral relativist" because of my indifference to what color of T-shirts people wear, if you chose to make it a "moral" issue - but the entire drama would be taking place nowhere but inside your infinitesimally tiny mind. It's the same reasoning the fundies use - if you aren't interested in what your neighbors do in bed, and want to make laws against it, you are a "moral relativist", with "no values". It's the same tired old frozen abstraction.
