Indeed. I'm curious, though, about how his style will mesh with the format. Should be interesting -- hope it works out, because they need someone solid over the next months.

Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark] 2008-06-22 12:34:59 PM
Matthews would be a terrible choice, as would Mitchell. I've heard people floating Chuck Todd's name. He's a blank enough slate to step in without a lot of baggage, but anyone who's familiar with him know that he knows his shiat (like Matthews, but without the ego and the yelling, and the sidetracking...)

Etchy333 [TotalFark] 2008-06-22 12:49:45 PM
Rush Limbaugh would be a fine host of Meet the Press.

Ok, seriously, they should get someone new to replace Russert. Like brand new, not another political host, or pundit, or talking head.

That's why Russert did such a great job with Meet the Press. He knew he was only holding the post for the next guy, and he saw it as a service to the American people, not to himself.

I still think long-term, David Gregory is going to be the person who is named moderator. I like Olbermann, but I don't think he'd be a good choice for MTP.

shiat, they ought to give it to Helen Thomas for the rest of her life.

bmr68 [TotalFark] 2008-06-22 02:09:11 PM
Olbermann and Matthews will not get the MTP job, because they are way too opinion-oriented.

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2008-06-22 02:30:07 PM
Brokaw, while no Russert, will do.

Still, its kind of like going from having Cy Young on the mound (in his prime) to having Greg Maddux.

Sure, the second is great, but there will only be one original.

I think KO could divorce himself from his opinions for an hour every day just fine - I just think he's a tad too goofy for the task.

bmr68: Olbermann and Matthews will not get the MTP job, because they are way too opinion-oriented.

Agreed. We need a real journalist on MTP, not an agenda driven asshole member of the professional outrage industry.

Sadly, there are very few real broadcast journalists left. Russert was one of the last and the best.

BiffDangler 2008-06-22 02:44:49 PM
Does this mean the endless Tim Russert news coverage will slow? God, I hope so.

Totally agree. Matthews hasn't even tried to be even handed on his Blue Balls...I mean Hardball show or even the other crappy thing he does.

I can't believe that even Keith Olberman's name has been floated....my gosh that would be an even WORSE choice.

Either one of those clowns would put MTP right back where it was before Russert took over....dead last and worse......absolutely no credibility. Kind of like where This Week with Clinton's Boy is now.

submitter: Tom Brokaw given "Meet the Press" chair until November, icy stares from Chris Matthews

Matthews didn't buy Russert all those Big Macs and snickerdoodles just to watch Brokaw slide into that job.

WFern 2008-06-22 02:51:29 PM
Reposted from another thread, regarding Brokaw:

Guy's a bit of a sensationalist though. For example, he was among those who fervently supported airing the tapes of the V-Tech killer, despite their total absence of any informational value. He helped give credence to Seung Hui-Cho and, when asked if this kind of immortalization of mass murderers would help inspire other nutjobs to make a media hopeful attack, resorted to sputtering and placing the blame on violent television and video games.

coco ebert [TotalFark] 2008-06-22 02:54:37 PM
Yeah, I think eventually it will be Andrea Mitchell or David Gregory, although something tells me they won't put a woman in that position.

I heard a good suggestion on another website. They should do what they used to do, with a panel of 3-4 people from the press. Let the politicians squirm a bit.

Or, have three different candidates do it for a short period of time and let the people vote online for who should be chosen. People power, yay!

/Aw, hell no.

Chuck Todd.....Now THAT'S an interesting choice. Todd was with Roll Call before taking the gig with NBC wasn't he ? He'd be a good choice, a political animal for sure, but a reporter, not an opinion puker like Matthews and Olberman. Neither would ever be taken seriously.

With all the incredibly dumb shiat going on in Washington, most of it by the current occupant of the white house, don't you think a little 'outrage' might be necessary (and even beneficial) from time to time?

I think that's the problem with the fat, lazy, complacent, "as long as I got mine fark all o'yall" populace that infests this nation. As long as they have their cloned McMansions and their Ford Extinctions and their big screen tv playing 'American Evil' and 'Who Wants To Be A Couch Potato' in front of the tan Lay-Z-Boy sectional reclining sofa while they gulp their FiveBucks mocha-latte-frappe-fecal-chino, they are happy and stupid, and happy to be stupid.

We need MORE outrage, not less.

shaggenstein 2008-06-22 03:00:32 PM
Bill Moyers would be an interesting choice

TellarHK 2008-06-22 03:00:48 PM
Whoever takes over Meet the Press has gigantic shoes to fill. They'll need to be able to hammer away at the candidate's BS and spin without getting personally involved or upset. And, they need to be someone that doesn't have a known political bias - or at least someone whose bias is spread out pretty evenly among all the parties.

Olbermann, Matthews, right out. David Gregory? Maybe. Matthews? He's the Nightly News anchor, should stick to that since MTP needs a lot of research time.

Now, how about Scott McClellan? He's pissed _everyone_ off at one point or another, and the man certainly knows how to handle himself in front of a camera and deal with spin.

Obermann still deserves the chair. After all these years of the press sucking and drinking up everything the right-wing has given them, it's time for a newscaster who will call them out on their lies. We knew the political leanings of Cronkite, Jennings, Brokaw and Rathers, yet they were still revered, but why is Obermann too much?

AFTER ALL THESE YEARS OF WHAT????????? Are you farking kidding me? You must be very young if you actually believe any of that drivel. The fact that you even believe that KO is appropriate for MTP and need to ask why he's " too much " speaks volumes. You don't want truth, you just want someone who will beat up those you don't like, and candy-ass those you do. Stick with your MSNBC nonsense programming for that and leave Sunday Mornings for the adults.

rogeryoung 2008-06-22 03:04:31 PM
I didn't watch much meet the press but I have to say all this coverage of his death (up to an including Larry King live blech) has been way way over the top. Anyone else remember when newsmen wern't newsmakers. Their now a part of the problem.

Actually, the first moderator of MTP was a woman.

This was back in the 1940s and 50s. So having a woman moderator wouldn't exactly be a groundbreakingly progressive move for MTP in the year 2008.

Not interesting at all...not believeable either. He's an unabashed and unapologetic left wing liberal. Nothing wrong with that, but after all of those years on PBS bashing conservatives and carrying liberals water, no one would take him seriously as a fair minded journalist.

We knew the political leanings of Cronkite, Jennings, Brokaw and Rathers, yet they were still revered, but why is Obermann too much?

Because while Cronkite, Jennings, Brokaw and Rather were highly informative, erudite, knowledgeable and professional, Olberman is all that PLUS something these other journalists weren't/aren't as much... he's entertaining. On his show not only does he point out the shiatpile that is the republican party (and even some turds in the democrat toilet), but he is allowed to step outside the box and rub their faces in it.

It's a joy to behold. I don't really want K.O. to take the MTP chair, because then he couldn't do that anymore... and weeknights on MSNBC would be a lot less watchable.

I stand corrected. But I think she was one member of a journalist panel. Anyway, I guess you're right. It's possible.

I just want you to know that I would take Greg Maddux (in his prime) over Cy Young (in his prime).

Maddux's 1994 Season was one of the all-time best. None of Cy's seasons came close (check out ERA+ if you don't believe me). The 4-year span of '92-'95 was absolutely spectacular. Again, Cy had no similar 4-year span. Add in that '96-'98 was nearly as good, and Maddux is a no-brainer.

But this isn't the sports tab, so I'm gonna leave now.

Five Frozen Fish Fingers 2008-06-22 03:28:36 PM
John McLaughlin is the obvious choice.

Anyone but Mitchell or Matthews would be alright.

mctom 2008-06-22 03:30:13 PM
The problem is that so many "journalists" have demonstrated that they are neutered interviewers and not able to ask a hard question, or do followup and make their subjects slightly uncomfortable in the process.. i.e. getting at the truth. Russert, though many had their issues with him, will be hard to replace on that account.

I could see David Gregory doing it well, likewise with Bill Moyers. But Moyers, like Olbermann has his own thing going, and it is so strong that it would be hard to fit them in another role. Not that they couldn't do it-- just that it might be too diverse for such strong personalities. I'd like to see fresher faces myself-- a young and fierce journalist earning cred the old fashioned way. I think Allison Stewart could be great, likewise with Rachel Maddow.

Although to be perfectly honest, I think the best interviewer out there right now is Stephen Colbert. I'd love to see him do a half hour show (or more) of just interviews, a la Moyers. That would be amazing.

Arnold T Pants 2008-06-22 03:31:59 PM
The idiots at DU thought Keith Olbermann would be a good replacement. LOL.
