I can't believe they drink more than the English. God, those people can drink. Just by spending time there, through some sort of strange osmosis, a person starts drinking more than they ever would. I turned into a raging alcoholic after two weeks in London.

Then again, I've never been to Ireland.

That being said, I'd believe it. Just the idea of living in a place that used to be a forest makes me sad. I could marry three soulmates, get stripper-grams instead of emails, and have the job of World's Official Beer Taste Tester and still not be happy without trees.
Of course, I doubt that's why the Irish are depressed, but trees farking rock! Gotta change my handle to treelover...

I'm surprised the Irish drink so much, the Irish woman certainly do not need beer googles to be appreciated.

Yeah. Imagine that the for centuries the English were the sober overlords of a whole nation, and how the downtrodden would drink and party to forget how screwed they were. Now you've got the Irish.

I'd have to agree-they are prodigious drinkers, I've been there twice. I was kicked out of a pub asking for tea. Part of the issue-including self-medicating depression is that it keeps you warm.

And.....
"I looked in a number of places for the answer to this question, without
success. I am not sure that there is a "standard" size for the gold bars
in Fort Knox. The Encyclopedia Americana, in the article on gold, says that
the gold bar most commonly used in international transactions weighs about
400 troy ounces, or about 27.4 "regular" (avoirdupois) pounds. The density
of gold is about 0.698 lb per cubic inch, so such a bar would have a volume
of about 39 cubic inches. A 6" x 3" x 2" brick would be close to this, so
I think the 400 troy oz. bar is the gold "brick" most of us have a mental
picture of.

The value of an ounce of gold varies from day to day; The closing price
on 6/22/08 was $903.60 per troy ounce, so a 400 ounce bar would be worth
(that day) a bit more than $361.440."
You can send that check to Paralyzed Veterans of America.

Well in Italy they say, "Lui fuma come un Turco", meaning "He smokes like a Turk" so that may be a clue. Turks do smoke a damn lot but not bowl type smoking if that's what you mean. I think the Jamaicans may have that wrapped up. Literally.

By the way, sorry if I misunderstood you but the Irish are not poor anymore. It's one of the largest importers of outside labor in the EU.

Yeah WTF?

I have to say I'm not suprised with the results of the study. As well as Irish drink being incredibly expensive (come to Dublin city and get robbed) in pubs the national stereotype of the drunken Irish sadly rings true.

It's a way of life. In my old job in a helpdesk if someone came in a few hours late, hungover like crazy the rest of the office would be nice to them and bring them water.
I have a feeling showing up to work still drunk after 2 hours sleep isn't as tolerated in other countries as it is over here.

I didn't think he was referring to the white Irish because he was referring to drinking and the thread is sociocultural based. Both Ruth Negga's and Samantha Mumba's mothers are white Irish.

So, what was your motivation in posting pics of 2 women who are in no way traditionally Irish? I read the article too.

My father was from Ireland, I have spent years there all told in over 20 visits (most recently 8 weeks last fall), most of my family lives there, and I can tell you that there are very few racial variances in the populace or in the "socio-cultural" base, to use your term.

The only reason I can think of that you would do what you did is to force some kind of faux diversity agenda down our throats.

BrianJLG: So, what was your motivation in posting pics of 2 women who are in no way traditionally Irish? I read the article too.

They are Irish, the focus was sociocultural (no pretty women to look at/be with), not conspicuously genetic (Celtic?) or ethnic by my reading, and unless men in Ireland somehow are genetically predisposed to not finding non-whites attractive, I don't see what race has to do with it. The women are all very attractive and Irish. What else are they supposed to be called? He may have been been referring to the white Irish, but I hadn't even thought about race until you mentioned it. I just knew of the Irish women I've always found attractive.

If someone made the same comment about Canada, a country that is traditionally white, but growing more diverse, there would likely be images of visible minorities, but they are still Canadian. If someone makes a comment that Canadians are drunks because the women are unattractive, I don't see how this would exclude visible minorities.
