I hope the "sword fight" isn't right after the pool party, if you know what I mean.

Considering most nudist look like me, you don't want to think about a swinger party

I've never understood the "traditional" nudist view of sex, then. Nudists seem like they get offended when people associate nudism with sex, but then prattle on about the beauty of the natural body or whatever. Well isn't part of that natural beauty sex? Why do they draw the line there?

And it's sort of ironic that these "live and let live" types are so upset over people having non-traditional sex in their neighborhood.

Too many colonies are way too strict about the whole erection thing. They go on about "nature" and "natural" but then get arch-conservative when it comes to erections.

Or is that too simple a solution?

What this needs is fantasy pictures. Just because reality isn't pretty, doesn't mean my fantasy life has to be ugly. In my happy place, all the women in the nudist colony are 18-30 years old, and in perfect shape. And for some reason, I'm the only guy there.

It sounds to me like the 'Family Friendly' nudists may be kinkier than the 'Swingers' ?
The Swingers are all adults while the other group wants everyone to ogle their naked children.

TheGreatGazoo 2008-06-22 09:23:16 AM
Actually, they've been having problems the last few years because their prices have gone way up, as well as the neighboring Paradise Lakes (who under new ownership seems to be selling everything but the pool water). The latter was owned by a developer who over-developed it, but it is starting to turn around.

The resorts that cater to the 'nude swingers' generally have better looking people than the 'family friendly' ones. Hedonism 2 and 3 in Jamaica would be a good example (though they aren't as wild/crazy as Howard Stern would like you to believe)

That is indeed a sensible and simple solution. :) Unfortunately, it would violate the 'New American' attitude of entitlement and "I see you enjoying yourself and minding your own business, so now I want the right to take over what you have and enjoy, and change it to suit MY enjoyment." That seems to be the norm nowadays, sadly.

Unfortuately, it sounds like the resort is completly selling out and trying to have their cake and eat it too. Traditional nudists make their homes there, but the resort doesn't want to give up the money-making opportunity of catering to the swingers, also. It would cost more money to build the swingers their own resort, and where money talks, everyone else has to STFU and get out.

/I disagree myself, but hey.

Of course, being a nudist now for 40 years I've lived through the entire "nudity isn't about sex" blah blah blah. Everything is about sex to some degree or another. "Traditional" nudists have denied for so long that there is NO sexuality in nudity, they've become really nutballs about it all.

Now, I don't belong to "the lifestyle", but I do welcome the new attitudes of the new "non-traditional" nudists. Every swinging nudist I've ever met has been totally nice, unobtrusive and respectful...which I cannot say about "traditional" nudists. They are usually the most rude, in-your-face, angry group of idiots you can ever meet. I think they're repressed because no one would ever offer to swing with them anyway.

I'm just saying...

Although, seriously, I hold a special loathing for swingers and open relationships in general.

The point of the "nudity does not equal sex" argument is that sexuality isn't specifically heightened by nudity - ie, the simple state of dress or undress isn't what arouses sexual desire. Yes, the nude body is beautiful, and by the simple virtue of being human we are all sexual beings so there is a certain sexuality to a nude person, just as there is to a clothed person. However, it is far more of a modest sexuality than people might imagine from simply seeing their intimate relationships nude or from seeing pornography. A person who does lust after others just because they are nude, and if someone is lusting after others while nude or not, that indicates they may have some personal issues they need to work on.

Yes, there are some swingers that visit the resorts. The important thing is that that lifestyle be kept private rather than public. A resort should not promote the swinger lifestyle, which it seems Caliente is doing (and I know of a few others). When resorts do promote the swinger lifestyle, it reassociates in the minds of the uninitiated the idea that nudity is equal to sex. This of course means that people who haven't tried it may be more reluctant, as they don't want to feel like cattle at market, and it might also cause nudism to be banned in more places (as it is in Arkansas and as various fundamentalists have attempted to do in other places as well).

Further, as pointed out in the article, people would be less likely to bring their kids. Now, this does not mean that anyone is hoping people bring their kids for some prurient desire, but rather there are many who believe (and there is research to support this) bringing up children in a non-sexual nude environment will give those children a better sense of self-esteem regarding their own bodies. However, when only one or two families bring their kids, the whole experience can be boring for the kids, so it's in their best interest if we encourage more families to come with their kids. Finally, there is something to be said for engendering ideologies in the newer generation so that when the older generation passes, someone will be there to take its place.

If you're a nudist and not a swinger, and you have kids you're raising as nudists as well, would you rather take them to a resort where swingers' events are planned publicly and you have to explain them to your snowflake? No, of course not; you'd take them to a resort that didn't have that type of activity. Further, if you do go to such a resort, there's a chance that your child will learn to associate the swinger lifestyle with positive attitudes and emotions and thus become a swinger him/herself. If you're trying to raise your child to be completely monogamous, you wouldn't want that either.

I'm not saying what's right or wrong in terms of the lifestyle itself, just what the arguments are. I'm fine with nude resorts that promote it, but that's why I have AANR to tell me what's good and what's not. The homeowners have a valid case, however - when they bought homes in the area, they did not have to worry about swingers being promoted publicly, and now they do. They'll have a harder time selling their homes since the club is no longer affiliated with AANR. With the club's current image, their homes have lost significant value, which is entirely the responsibility of the club.

FloridaAsshat 2008-06-22 11:15:03 AM
It's all pretty goofy. The "traditional" nudists tend to be middle-aged and older (often much older) people who just like to hang out naked.

The "swingers" tend to be people of the same age as above (although usually not as many older ones) who like to have sex parties.

Neither group could be mistaken for the Tampa Bay Bucs cheerleaders.

When I first moved to Florida I was a bit curious about these things, but all it took was a couple of visits to the various clubs to see what was up. It REALLY drives home the Seinfeld bit about "good nudity" vs. "bad nudity."

So a big whatever.

FloridaAsshat 2008-06-22 11:19:56 AM
reillan:

Yes, the nude body is beautiful,...

Wrong. The nude body of Denise Richards is beautiful. The nude body of the average nudist, swinger or otherwise, is not.

GoofingOff 2008-06-22 01:39:05 PM
I'm all for if you want to be a nudist, swinger, whaterver...go ahead. I'm having a hard time (no pun intended) accepting that nudist resorts allow kids. Just think of all the wacko child molesters that could be there. Seems like a kid in a candy store to those sickos.

WordyGrrl 2008-06-22 02:15:39 PM
A bunch of swingers recently "discovered" the gay bar where my friends and I hang out sometimes, figuring they could "find a third." There's nothing quite like trying to enjoy a night out with friends and having some greasy, overweight Guido (with gold chains) stumble over to you and interrupt your convo to ask if you wanna swing with him and his worn-out subservient wife. Ick. Nasty.

crotchie 2008-06-22 02:18:43 PM
Goofball_Jones has it just about right. A colleague is a nudist (and waaaay too sharey-sharey about it).

He finally convinced another co-worker and her girlfriend, both beautiful, petite young women, to visit their "non-sexual" resort, assuring them it wasn't about sex at all.

The women spent the entire afternoon rebuffing the advances of the other members, until they finally got fed up and left.

I'm sure there are some people who get desensitized to the whole thing, and it really doesn't end up sexual for them. That isn't how they start out.

cynicalbastard 2008-06-22 02:25:47 PM
Hey, there's a reason swingers clubs and corsets/pushup bras go together. Nipples pointing vertically down aren't a great thing visually unless she's in the doggy position.
/which is yet another reason doggy-style is so great...

I used to work @ Lake Como resort, which is across the lake from Paradise mentioned above, and a couple of miles from Caliente.

Como was a family friendly nudist resort and community. Paradise was a 'clothing optional' resort and community. And there is a difference.

Nudists in general, at least in the perspective of having to work with them, were pretty laid back people. It's hard to take yourself too seriously when you are naked.

I don't remember the people in the resort being all that sexual in public, except at the dances on weekends. And children are treated with respect by all adults who have the privilege of membership. Anything untoward to a child would get your butt thrown out.

Caliente is the place where Paris Hilton played 'maid' with Nicole Richie. It's full of white trash, so she fit right in.

flsammyfm 2008-06-22 04:46:29 PM
I've been to all three (Como, Paradise, and Caliente), and a good friend's parents live in Paradise.

They're all exactly the same, except for the income level, with them ascending in the above order.

And yes, while many state the whole 'nudity for nudity's sake', they're all full of perverted middle-agers. I can't imagine, for one second, taking a child there, but it happens.

Nothing more disconcerting than some older, pasty guy, who's decided that nudity, for him, is to leave his shirt on, and take off everything else. Except, perhaps, when he decides to ride his bicycle through the 'community'

Which, by the way, is the standard uniform of the male nudist.
