The pedestrian or the driver?

It's times like these that make me wish I had a sumo wrestler entourage.

I'd ask if you read the article, but I don't even think you read the headline.

They're big, but cars are bigger. And personally I'd rather be stuck under a car than a sumo's butt cheeks.

Obviously, the driver was desensitized and trained to do this by playing GTA IV.

The way I imagined it the driver tried to brake at the last moment but couldn't. The sumos would calmly grab the car in unison, loft it above their heads and slowly march to the police station, the driver livid and shaking his fist the entire way. I'll admit there are other ways it might play out.

If the pedestrian's body is using the ragdoll physic's engine like in GTA4, then I don't blame the driver. It's fun to watch 'em fly!`

Gyrfalcon [TotalFark] 2008-06-22 06:06:22 AM
Acshually, the headline makes it seem like it's the CAR doing all the damage, so if we just take the key out of the ignition, problem solved!

Oh, you mean the driver IN the car keeps hitting pedestrians. So take the key out of the ignition...

Joce678 2008-06-22 06:45:14 AM
And so it begins...

Not the old one, though. He "mistook the gas for the brake", like all the old ones do. Cute, aren't they?

Where I live in San Francisco, people will just walk in the street. Mostly the drug-addled and hood-rats.

I saw one homeless guy completely drunk in the street, yelling at cars. Then I heard sirens and I stayed to watch. The sirens approached and he began yelling at the firetrucks. They blew the horn repeatedly but that only seemed to make him angry and he took off his shirt. As the trucks passed he hit them with his shirt.

In fact, walking in the street is so common we call it "the Tenderloin Lurch."

/Man I wish I had my camera with me.

He's been driving for forty years, goddamnit, and he doesn't need no disrespectful young whippersnappers telling him what pedal to push.

I'm reminded of the old SNL skit about "someone is mugged every 7 seconds in NY...here's that man". Funny as hell.
/But seriously they should stop this guy...he's a menace.

geetus 2008-06-22 07:46:55 AM
If only they had an organization that would patrol the roads and try to keep things like this from happening.

/I can dream, can't I?

FTA: A car plowed into pedestrians on a New York City sidewalk for the fourth time in two days, hurting four people and raising the toll to nearly two dozen victims from the strange spate of wrecks.

Coincidence. The numbers are there, and people in NY generally don't know how to drive in the first place.

FTAEarlier Friday, a 60-year-old driver accidentally hit the gas instead of the brakes while pulling out of a Chinatown parking spot, police said. His car hit seven people on the sidewalk and a bench; two were hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

This doesn't sound like a bad stereotype at all. Oh no.

Interesting story, except none of the people who were hit were walking in the street. They were all on the sidewalk.

...spotted leaving the scene of said accidents.

"Then I told him to get rid of it...you know? For DECENCY'S sake...of course, the car came back for him three weeks later."

"What do you mean 'came back'?"

Sounds like a better job of reading it than you did.

/came in to say the same thing
//you'd think those pedestrians would stay home after being hit the third time

Here in Sacramento the old Globe Mills was just redeveloped into senior apartments. The entire ground level is a parking garage. This is the area where all the homeless hang out, and the light rail runs on that street, so I expect things to get much more interesting on 12th and D in the near future.

/amusement value of Alkali Flats/La Valentina area = priceless

subby- rtfa much? it was 4 different drivers commuting the acts, not one dude. they already caught each driver, too. it's not like there is someone in NY commiting serial hit-and-run assaults or something.

of course #5 was hit last night when a 11 year old child way hit by a car while playing in the street at 1:30 in the morning.

The next logical question after reading that should be "WTF is a 11 year old kid doing playing in the street at 1 farking 30 in the morning". Seriously.

People are way too careless crossing against the lights in Manhattan. The worst offenders deserve whatever happens to them.

/ok I know it was the sidewalk, but still.

But what about the Bench ???

SlothB77 2008-06-22 09:20:00 PM
for the record, the drivers are:

16 - akeem grant, brooklyn
? - Estabannie Sanche, unlicensed, 7th avenue, music store
? - Cab driver, harlem, drives into bank
60 - male hits the wrong pedal pulling out of a parking space.
