What next? A hop-skip-and jump charity event to help the victims of the 1980 Kansas City hotel walkway collapse?

Let's never forget everybody that died in a tragedy ever!

There was a great episode of Nova on this.

New York Giants... is there anything they can't do?

That's nice. I love asbestos underwear, it keeps me warm, dry, and very secure.

My friend was an EMT and was down there when the towers fell. His wife, who loses sleep worrying about his health, and who freaks out every time he coughs, has some strong words for you Mr. Internet Tough Guy.

If he develops lung cancer or emphysema, he won't be getting medical coverage for it.

And this means .. what?

I'm with Churchill2004 on this one.
With stories coming daily of young men and women being ripped apart in the war and coming home to a VA hospital bed and not much else, it seems almost a crime to raise money for people who haven't faced adversity since September 11th, 2001.

At the same time, raising money for ANY charity is a better use of your time than... let's say scrolling the comments section of a silly not-news website at 3 in the afternoon on a rainy Tokyo Sunday. So, doglover doffs his chapeau to the folks involved in TFA, regardless of what they are raising money for.

I wonder if the Patriots taped it.

I'm a former giant who walked cross country for the victims of 9-11, and I'm getting a kick out of these responses.

wildcardjack 2008-06-22 01:48:19 AM
If he was still a Giant he would have been done sooner, thanks to the longer stride.

Chagrin 2008-06-22 01:48:58 AM
These 9/11 families have gotten so much cash I wish I had a family member die there. Somewhere around $2 million each?

Could I at least get $500,000 if my sister were to accidentally fall off a cliff?

KingKat 2008-06-22 01:50:57 AM
Well done, George.
*golf clap*

We need a new investigation. We still don't understand how it happened and who did it. There needs to be a full and public accounting.

Craig341 2008-06-22 01:59:04 AM
Wow. The douchebag is strong in this thread.

Hint: some of the EMTs and everyone else that day that (gasp!) dared to put the lives of other people ahead of their own health hazards; and the decisions of the oh-so-wonderful people deciding whether or not to pay out money (another hint: their decisions have almost all tended to be along the lines of STFU and GBTW). Like it or not, people are still having health hazards, and good for this guy for supporting them.

That's where you're wrong. Many of the first responders are having health issues directly related to what was in the air on 9/11. The official death toll of 9/11 is somehwere around 2750, but the actual number of people who will die/have died is actually much higher and it's because of the toxic substances that were in that dust. Lung cancer, rare forms of blood cancer, emphysema, and other blood and lung-related diseases are being reported by first responders and people who were at ground zero when the towers fell are being reported in numbers over 50% with some studies saying over 70%. And the government is doing to nothing help them.

I can't fault you, though. Like much of the country, you're ignorant about the serious health crisis following the attacks because anyone who would say these people aren't facing diversity would be telling a bold-faced lie.

FrankenPengie 2008-06-22 02:01:02 AM
When I saw the events unfold I thought of what I would do. After the collapse and the dust storm I thought, 'remove article of clothing, if no water piss on it, breathe through it'. If all you can think is run, Darwin will win.

If you run in to save lives without thinking of your own safety, you are sacrificing yourself.

If you did not have direct experience of a catastrophic event and wish to do anything to help those who did by giving your time to raising awareness or giving of that which you can, then you have made a difference.

Whatever happens, it's what you do that counts.

You'd trade your family for money?

Dude...

/I get half

Brubold 2008-06-22 02:07:55 AM
I saw Mr. Martin when he was interviewed by Inside the NFL (I think? It was the HBO NFL show). Anyway, he really came off as a great man and I'm glad his walk was a success.

I wish the media would share more stories like his about NFL players. There are a lot a great guys in the league and only a few idiots get most of the press.

mephisto6 2008-06-22 02:09:29 AM
No you cannot be a San Diego Charger, George.

Not yours.

tonesskin [TotalFark] 2008-06-22 02:12:13 AM
Look, you may not be a fan of 50 Cent or Kanye West, but that doesn't make you a "victim." I mean, you didn't have to buy their albums on the day they dropped.

But I sure hope this guy prayed for Omarion.

wantadayoff 2008-06-22 02:22:41 AM
So I guess I have to call Baron-Harkonnen on using the word "diversity" when he clearly (hopefully) meant to use the word "adversity". Diversity is when situations/objects/people are different, adversity is used in terms of the challenges people face.
I'm sure you meant that, though.

/loved your sentiment
//not convinced you're not a neo-con

That is one of my first memories...if not my absolute first. I was 4 years old and we were visiting KC. I remember it being on the TV in our hotel room and my parents being in shock. IIRC, it is still the greatest engineering disaster in US history, maybe the world.

Nope, I was wrong. AT THE TIME, it was the greatest engineering disaster. Sorry for getting your hopes up.

I grew up in KC, I remember distincly that they interupted an epsiode of Bugs Bunny with that collapse news ...

Books, lectures and apparently Nova have devoted a ton of time to this topic.

SAN DIEGO (AP) ― It took 10 months, 24 pairs of shoes and 40 pounds of flesh, but former New York Giant George Martin has finished a cross-country walk to raise money for people with health problems linked to the September 11 attacks

yep. thats pretty unimpressive. A brisk walk is a 15 minute mile, so thats 2 1/2 hours of brisk walking a day.

not impressed.

I pretty much lost touch with the US in 2004 when I moved abroad. I've been back for a cumulative 3 months in all the years since.

Thus I was unaware any of the first responders who had health issues were still having them. In which case, it's a more than worthy cause to raise money for.

Bravo, Mr.Cross Country Fundraisin' Guy. This Asahi Super Dry's for you!
