The Deppster's rep as one of the nicest guys in show biz continues to grow, I see. Good to see stuff like this every once in awhile -- nice break from the usual celebretard stuff.

I was floored when he did the narrative for one of the episodes of "This American Life" for a handicapped guy who couldn't speak.

When he was still dating Winona Ryder, her little brother's team won the local little league championship. Instead of the usual Round Table Pizza party, Johnny took the team, including coaches & parents, to a celebration party in San Francisco.

Open Letter To Johnny Depp

Mr. Depp:

I've enjoyed your body of work. Growing up in New Jersey, '21 Jump Street' struck a chord with me as a teenager. You even played my second favorite author, in the movie of my second favorite book (Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, maybe in 30 years you'll appear as Kurt Vonnegut in the adaptation of Cat's Cradle, then you will be first and first!!!).

More concisely, I like what you do. You are poised to be my generations De Niro, Pacino, Brando... You haven't had the "Godfather" level role those three did, but it's coming... you've been so close... If only Finding Neverland had a bigger audience.

Mr. Depp, my request is... come home and help us. You came from Owensboro, KY... and Owensboro needs your help. I've lived in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Kentucky. I started living in Lexington, but moved to Owensboro to be a Public Defender. Owensboro NEEDS YOUR HELP!!!

Your hometown has fabulous real estate, right on the river... but acts like an empty rust-belt town. It could be wonderful, it could be a midwest destination... but leadership has stalled... youth are non-ambitious. No hope, no future.

I love my role in Daviess County Juvenile Court... because I know what it is like to grow up in a town with limited opportunity... but this town has NO OPPORTUNITY!(For youth growing up... elders see it, but deny it!)

We have the "Mystery Festival"... GREAT START, got Mary Higgins Clark and Gene Hackman here!!! But not enough people attend. The E was ready, before bankruptcy, the advertising is sub-par.

Owensboro needs someone to promote the town, assess the town, give it a direction. Owensboro needs a case study not done by some PR hack from Indianapolis. We need a NY/LA kinda guy to make this a boutique, cute, travel to, detination town.

All I'm saying, Mr. Depp, you can bring a little Hollywood glamour, a little Parisian touch... a lot of shopping... and MILLIONS in opportunity to your hometown.

Don't look at your hometown as the place you hated and loathed,... look at it as the place to foster new talent... encourage it, grow it...

Writers and directors are not born in New York or LA... they get born in Wyoming, Nebraska, and 48 other states... then move to NY/LA!!!!

Owensboro is in turmoil... the "E" is gone... but Owensboro has to live tomorrow....

...DO NOT LET OWENSBORO FALL BEHIND BOWLING GREEN!!!

Yum. Johnny Depp is one actor who acts as as nice as he looks. It's incredibly rare when you get someone like this. Tom Hanks is another example of an actor who looks nice & acts nice in real life.

I dunno about that guy but coffee makes me happy in the morning.

The point is, celebrity and wealth go to people's heads, and make them think they're better than other people. You have to be a pretty nice person for that to NOT happen, and it's always a pleasure to see nice people doing nice things for others.

I think a better explanation is that we have become so conditioned to seeing celebs act like total douchebags that when we hear of an instance of one behaving like a normal human being we think he deserves a medal. I mean wow, at the request of his publicist, he took maybe 10 minutes to answer some questions to a demographic that has help make him a millionaire. What a swell guy.

I have to agree with others in this thread about Johnny Depp. The guy just seems like a down to earth class act. Seems like he just wants to have fun wherever he goes.

when people wanted ben roethlisburger to sign autographs shortly after becoming a popular quarter back he wanted 100 dollars per autograph.

there are plenty of celebrities who do not sign stuff for free, much less giving away photos and playing along w/ an elementary school newspaper

Point granted here, these days, when someone actually waves at me when I let them merge into the the lane in front of me, it feels like the second coming of Christ. Gratitude for the little shiat in life? WTF is that??

In Depp's favor, it seems a huge bulk of the things that he does for people are not as the result of a PR guy, but because he chose to go and do something nice for his own reasons. I am under the impression that he, in Jack Sparrow regalia, visited a UK children's hospital several months ago to cheer the kids under his own recognizance. It didn't hit the media until people blabbed and Disney fell all over themselves to get in on the act. Yeah, he shouldn't be given a medal, but it's a nice footnote to the catalogue of nice human interest stories.

And then there's, say, Sean Penn who takes a camera team everywhere he goes, is a gigantic douchenozzle, and is a major contributor to Smug pollution.

PorkSword 2008-06-22 11:27:08 AM
I have a friend that is a yacht captain, and well, being that it's a yacht owned by a super-rich guy, he sometimes has celebrities aboard. A few years back Depp was a guest on the boat. Not only did he hang out with the crew all night getting tanked, but woke up before everyone and cooked farkin breakfast for the entire crew. My pal has met many celebs on the boat, and Depp is regarded as the coolest that any of the staff has met.

Johnny Depp being nice and all aside, is no one else disgusted that this teacher is encouraging the concept of celebrity worship?

Where I went to elementary school we used to choose to write a letter to anyone we wanted as part of a class project. Some people wrote to Nancy Reagan, some people wrote to Jesse Jackson, some people wrote to Michael Jackson... it was just a fun thing to do that encouraged us to learn to write and taught us how to write a letter.

I wrote to Harrison Ford. Still have an autographed Indiana Jones picture around somewhere, but man I was disappointed at the time since I was kind of hoping for Han Solo instead.

Depp's a cool cat. And he seems to get cooler now that he's finally gotten real commercial success. So what if he lives in France? Hollywood is a hell hole. So is New York. Actually so is Paris, so I hear.

It was the school newspaper asking interview type questions to a famous person who happened to be in town for cryin out loud. Sounds like the kids and teacher were just doing their job. Definately more fun than digging up a lunch room scandal.
