What keeps someone from saying they smoke just to get the vouchers?

ErikShocker 2008-06-22 12:35:27 AM
dnrfa, Why don't they just restrict the sales of cigarettes with this money? They could do it like they do here with food stamp cards.

/probably answered in the article...

The money will be credited onto an electronic card which cannot be used for cigarettes or alcohol. (new window)

I suspect this scheme to be deeply flawed, but they did manage to think of that FFS !

Stop buying cigarettes and you'll have some extra cash for other necessities.

Like lottery tickets.

Yea, that really works so well too.

Maybe you should get behind some stamp users sometime. They'll buy everything in stamps then pull out a 3" roll of cash for the cigs and beer.

This is the kind of cunning planning that results in img1.fark.net.

/Hotlinked?
//Not sure if its really considered "shameless" in this case.

They already do that in America. There is extra cash on the EBT cards for people on "Assisted Living" to buy smokes, liquor and tobacco. Don't want that family of 10 in the trailer park to be w/o Old Grandad & GPC smokes now do we?

Isn't this just encouraging people to start smoking so they can quit later and get the vouchers?

Why can't everyone just let us smoke and die if we want? Seriously.

It doesn't matter. Money otherwise used for buying groceries could be used to buy cigs and/or alcohol, while the vouchers then become the means to buy the groceries.

Because everyone was nearsighted enough to institute nationalized health care, thereby making everyone everyone's responsibility; the judge of acceptability being that which is most financially efficient, supplanting the obsolete concept known as "personal choice."

You win the thread, sir.

Scotland already has a very effective anti-smoking program in place, thank you very much. You can't enjoy a cigarette in public without attracting a mob of scumbags trying to bum off you. I thought about stuffing a few tubes full of dried sheep dung to hand out. Might still do it.

I was being dead serious. Commentary on this subject isn't new, but if you insist on being a sheeple, there's not much I can do about it.

Exactly. Paying for their food just frees them up to spend the rest of their money on cigarettes, lottery tickets, etc. In effect, you are just paying for them to buy shiat that they don't need.

/I know that not everyone does this, but I have had enough experience to see it happen often

Because you stick your nose in others people's business when it suits you gimmeabreak, therefore they feel justified sticking their nose in yours when it suits them.

Persuasive, rather than coercive, anti-smoking measures are entirely dependent on personal choice.

I doubt that anyone with be reading this, it's far too much fun to assume the people who suggested this were idiots.

1) The get cards not cash and can't use them to by cigs or alcohol

I know what you're thinking, it still frees us cash though......

2) The are tested weekly for Carbon Monoxide to ensure they are not smoking....

3) They can only take part for a maximum of 12 Weeks

Still don't think it will work as if money was an incentive they will save more, approx £6 for 20 (or $12) or on average £31 ($62) per week (average usage in UK is 15 per day)

Would still rather have nationalised healthcare and incentives (the US still has stronger rules about not smoking in many places and they don't have anything close to the NHS)

What_Would_Jimi_Do 2008-06-22 04:23:22 AM
i am in the USA in nc, i stopped at a normal place to buy cigarettes yesterday, normally 5.07 a pack, 3.10 a pack is what they charged. 2 dollar a pack savings, i got 10. they didn't have any cartons. i got an extra 20 dollars of gas.

haddie 2008-06-22 06:34:22 AM
For one of the fattest parts of Europe, and therefore the world, one would assume they would want more people smoking and less groceries...

Yeah, nevermind the decades of clinical trials showing these kinds of programs to be the most effective psychosocial (i.e. non-pharmaceutical) interventions for smoking cessation and drug abstinence.
